Dohle Joni

Kurz zu Gast: Eine ausgebüxte, freche und zahme Dohle.
Joni war im Juni 2016 einige Wochen bei mir, dann übernahm ihn ein Nachbar mit einer (offenen) Volliere. Im November 2016 ist Joni mit einer Gruppe von Dohlen weitergezogen - und war nie mehr gesehen. Sniff.
ENGLISH: This cheeky and tame jackdaw was my guest for a short time in June 2016, then a neighbour took him over to his (open) Volliere. In November 2016 Joni moved on with a group of jackdaws - and was never seen again. Sniff.

I had the honor of watching bald eagles build their nest and raise their babies on a remote cam that made them feel right beside you. The parent eagles were so dedicated to their young, and to feel close to them was so amazing. Wild animals have something that we lack, the freedom to be completely in the moment, and completely free. I would rather watch those eagles than hang out with my fellow humans. Because what I get is a feeling of timelessness and grace, and the incredible beauty of life.

I watched pigeons raise their young on my neighbour's broken top floor window if that counts for something. Their first flights were to my window and back, and they still all hang around here. They kinda trust me a bit, cause they see me so often plus I give birds water in the summer and food in the winter.

Dohlen sind extrem klug! Also wirklich. Wenn man sich die Zeit nimmt die eine Weile zu beobachten merkt man das ganz schnell. Übrigens beobachten diese Vögel uns umgekehrt auch. Es ist deshalb gar nicht so schwer mit ihnen in Interaktion zu treten. ☺️☺️🖤

Definitely a baby because of the eye color and feathers and because he makes that fluttering wing movement and special super loud baby quack. They are so mischievous as babies and teens. lol My favorite bird.

Beautiful. I like your neighborhood too. In the 80s I found a young jackdaw in the field behind my parents house. It was tame too and very hungry. I fed him/her and when I went to the field with him the next day a group of adult Jackdaws came and he/she flew away with them. They sat on the roof of a neighbors house for a while, as if to say thank you and then flew away. Tschüss!

I always think it's remarkable that wild animals will respond to humans scratching or patting them, when this would never happen to them in their natural habitat. Yet when it's done to them (like here), they love it.

Too cute by half!! That he seems so tame is amazing. "My" crows won't even eat anything I put out for them if I remain on the scene. They are unbelievably skittish and not all appreciative of the fare I give them. In fact, they now squawk at me when I put dog food out for them--the stuff they used to chow down on with utter delight. I swear they want me to up the ante by giving them something new. Oooookay, so I complied by OCCASIONALLY giving them scraps of left over chicken and eggs which I go to the trouble of hard cooking. And still no appreciation shown by letting me remain outside whilst they feed. Before they will touch anything I offer, I must take myself back in. I've been feeding these monkeys for two years and still no gratitude. No matter, I still feed these discontents. They're such brats!!! :) :)

Hey, it's been a while since you made this comment but I'd been having the same issue and solved it by eating my own food while the crows eat. It calms them down so much to know you have your own food, so you have no reason to grab them and eat them alive. I always had to walk a good 50 yards away from my crows in order to coax them down at all, but now I can stand practically in the middle of their formation with very little hesitation or fear coming from them. Still, they don't like being approached, so don't move around at all, but park yourself in the general vicinity of their food and start eating some potato chips or whatever. Stare off into the distance as if you're totally absorbed in your meal. You're probably aware that they get freaked out if you look at them head-on, as a human's front-facing gaze is unmistakably that of a predator

He's tame in the sense that he's a very young bird who picked this man as a temporary babysitter and let him do the things his mom would do, like feeding him, cleaning/petting him etc. :)

@@wedding2710 Yes, I've noticed that crows get nervous when you look at them directly. The opposite is the case with jackdaws because they communicate with eye contact and look you directly in the eye, so if they have identified you as a friend, not looking at them would probably confuse them. The ones I'm friends with do the cutest little "pfff"/sneezing sound when they want me to pay attention and look at them. lol That's so cool that you figured out they were not eating around you because they were worried you might want to eat them or take their food when you were not eating something yourself. :D

I think it is better that he went on to live the life that was intended for him. It's nice, occasionally when a wild animal takes the time to share his life with a few humans, it gives us greater insight to the animal kingdom. He probably went on to find a mate and raise kids like the rest of us - as it should be. Thanks for sharing this unique moment.

Herrlich!!! Ich hatte auch eine Dohle großgezogen. Tagsüber war sie immer frei! Wenn es Abend wurde wollte sie hoch in die Wohnung. Irgendwann hat sie - meine Mutti hat es gesehen, konnte aber nichts tun - der Habicht im Flug gefangen - ein schrecklicher Tag!!!

Ich hatte als Kind eine zahme Dohle. Sie hat schon auf mich gewartet wenn ich von der Schule kam und hat mich dann freudig begrüßt. Leider ist sie in der Badewanne für das Baby das wir hatten und das im Freien stand ertrunken. Keiner hat daran gedacht das mein Tschaki darin baden will. Ich bin heute noch sehr traurig. Er hat mich ganz lieb an den Ohrläppchen gezogen und mir dann in die Augen geguckt.😢

Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Mehrere Jahre kam 1 Dohle zu mir auf die Terrasse, wartete bis ich um 14h von der Arbwit kam, stellte mir seine Frau und Kind vor bis..... ich wegziehen musste 😯. Er fehlt mir heute noch!
