His Bad Ischl quintet performance anecdote exactly corroborates a BBC interview by Ilona Eibenschütz, who recalled the Brahms Clarinet Quintet pre-première performance, again by the Kneisel Quartet, with Richard Mühlfeld, again in Ischl, while the ink was still wet on the page.

He saw Liszt as a kid and died away from Hungary when jets were flying at the speed of sound and bombs were being dropped in Vietnam. What a change must that have been.
