I think most people forget that the language class they took in school gave you a lot of vocabulary but didn’t do enough repetition and simple sentence structure like Duolingo. That’s why most leave school with random words, phrases and being able to count to 10 but with no sense of how to use them to communicate. I am learning Russian and Catalan and I found the sometimes awkward sentences to be very helpful because Ive learned to put together rudimentary sentences where I can be understood. I think learning your numbers first and not having the words to say something like, I need 5 tacos it’s an emergency! doesn’t help you. In the mean time you can use your hands to show the numbers or just write the number down I guess. I look forward to see what crazy sentences they will give me with numbers!

Idk how it works in English, but in Portuguese first, we can try to understand the pronunciation of some vowels together in French using our native language, mine is Portuguese. So, for example in the word "beaucoup".. "eau" sounds like "o" and "ou" sounds like "u".. Then, we can pronounce it like "bocu".. When I'm using Duo, I always try to repeat the phrases loud twice, even if the lesson is of writing.. Anyway, for me to focus on the pronunciation since the beginning helped me a lot to improve it. I still can't formulate big phrases to have a real conversation with someone.. But I'm enjoying this process of learning.. And it has been nice to follow yours too.. haha

I started learning French on Duolingo just like you about a year ago. I'm a native English speaker and I also speak Spanish around a B2/C1 level, but I'm hoping to learn not only French but Italian, Portuguese, and German as well. I always look for a variety of ways to learn, but I agree with you that Duolingo serves as a good way to get going on a language. I may be taking a trip to France next summer, so I plan on working my way through as many Duolingo units as I can. Good luck with your studies and update us soon.

Hi James thanks for watching! Sound like you’re soon on your way to being a polyglot :) have you been learning all of those languages at the same time? Also have you been to France before? I’m planning to go for the first time later this year so it will be great to have some of this foundational knowledge! Best of luck with your studies as well and thanks for watching!

@@Jackieofall I spent a day in France with my family on the way to Germany, but it wasn't really enough time to practice. We may he going to Disneyland Paris next year and I look forward to trying out my French. As far as the other languages, I plan on taking them on one at a time.

Great video! Your experience is similar to mine. I’m working on Spanish, day 107. For me the app is good at keeping me engaged but the pace of growth is very slow. At times I’ve spent more energy on generating points than working on lessons. When it comes to reading, writing and conjugating the app is good but when it comes to teaching me to converse and speak out loud, the app is weak. I don’t understand why they don’t have a section where you match and memorize the top 50 most used verbs and 500 most common nouns. For example I know how to conjugate “er” verbs so now give me 50 “er” verbs to memorize. I recently travelled to Spain and while the work in I did in duolingo helped a lot. Google translate spoke more than I did and that was disappointing. I have hope that if I keep pushing to learn a language i will make it happen, when one tool fails I will strive to find another. Good luck with French! Bonnie Chance! Buena Suerte!

Thanks so much J P for watching! Yeah I agree! I think from a grouping perspective that the order in which things are taught is not very intuitive or the best for growth. I hope you keep it up and find other tools that also help your growth!

hey, i am a native english speaker but i am also learning french. something that i noticed during the intro is that you said "j'étudie français" but when you said it it sounded like "je étudie français". i think with duolingo it can be hard to understand how to pronounce things because of how they space the words, for example when you use the building blocks they space the words " j' " and "étudie". however, you should think of it like english contractions. when we say can not, it is contracted to can't, so we don't say the "no" from not. when saying "j'étudie" there is no need to say the "e" from the "je" because it is contracted, therefore it sounds like just one word! hope this helps you and bonne chance for your french journey :)

Hi, nice vid. I had some recommendations for some language resources at an (intermediate level?) Soo I find that the inner French podcast is pre good, also imapolyglot podcast and news in slow French alongside like KZbin channels like le monde (Vox type channel), science etonnate and dirtybiology (because I’m a science geek). Though, pls keep in mind that this might be a bit too fast for a man intermediate , so slow down the video if the need arises. Great vid in any case

Je pense que ça duolingo n’est pas un très bien app apprendre français. Je pense que est should be utilisé as a back up plan apprendre any langue car est does not cover beaucoup of the important vocabulaire nous besoin. (Tried my best to speak as much French as I’ve learned from duolingo)

I've been using it since, I think, October of last year to learn German outside of school, and it's really easy to fall into the trap of doing just 5 to 10 minutes each day solely to keep my streak going. What are some ways that you've found to stay motivated to keep learning? Enjoyed the video, btw!
@Jackieofall
@Jackieofall 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Saiph! Thanks for watching! And I know what you mean by the trap! I’ve definitely fallen into that habit on some days. What keeps me motivated is to make sure I’m learning or retaining something new everyday and making improvements everyday. Even though sometimes progress is slow some days, I stay motivated by the idea that I’m making at least a little progress each day!
