I love the sneaky way you used a set up block to make sure the mortices for the braces were put at the right height. No measuring required; neat.

Not sure why, but cutting those 45˚ tenons on the tablesaw with just the fence made my spider-sense tingle.

One thing to remember on those tenons is to cut the top of the mortise a smidge wider so when you drive in the wedges, it pushes out the tenon so it will never be able to slip out . The glue helps a lot here as well. Lovely bench.

Filling the end grain with homemade putty from the contrasting color wood was fantastic. Definitely putting that into my bag o' tricks. There's a whole in the bottom of that bag, so it may fall out before I use it, but it's going in there all the same.

Seeing as it is one piece and not a production run, would the mortice and tenon work not have been faster by hand? Chop chop chop saw pare done.

I still can't get that sawdust and glue trick to work for me. I always get splotchy finish from glue spots. Or I have to scrape away so much wood to get rid of the glue I dish out the surface.
@BigHeinen
@BigHeinen Жыл бұрын
Many of the PVA-based glues will not accept any finish so you'll get a splotchy outcome. Use a natural based glue like a hide glue for this sawdust/glue trick and you'll be a happy camper!
@CarlYota
@CarlYota Жыл бұрын
Depending on your finish you can use poly or varnish or epoxy instead of glue to get a better result that blends in more with the surrounding finished wood. Basically the same concept as filling knot holes with epoxy. You have to polish it up to a really high grit to get it clear but it blends pretty well with a hard wax oiled piece. A glue based mix not only doesn’t take a finish it is an obvious stain as you know.

@@BigHeinen how do these guys do it with Titebond 3? Even little bits of glue that stuck to my fingers when I touch the wood resist the stain. I’ve been card scraping a lot, but I’m losing my crisp corners

Beautiful build as always!. Question- Did you have any concerns of the tenon wedges splitting the top? I've always been told the wedges should be perpendicular to the grain lines to prevent splitting.
