Can you get a 26 inch barrel custom made 1: 8.5 twist for the Berger 135’s in 257 caliber? Might worth the custom upgrade to achieve the results you’re after. Just might work. Great videos and well thought out information.

You have tail wobble. If you read up on subsonic bullet performance you will find some good info on tail wobble. Keep the barrel clean and it will minimize this.

Its happened to me twice now, with marginal stability situations , they shoot and group well at 100, but at 200 and beyond the groups open up really fast and there’s evidence of key holing starting to happen.

Since those two experiences, whenever I’m close to marginal stability, I stay within the stable factor, save the components and the frustration. But in your situation, I would definitely try them at longer ranges and see what happens. Awesum if it works!

The loads shown in this vid are extremely similar to the performance of the .25 Sherman Short Tactical (SST). It shoots the 135grs around 3200fps and is designed for them, also fits in a short action. Absolute laser beam, even past 1000yds. Only becomes subsonic at nearly 2000yds! And if you go by Energy - 1000ft-lbs at 1200yds... plenty lol. With my conditions set and 10mph wind, to 1000yds it only drops 191" and needs 39" windage... everyone hypes up the "6 MILs to 1000" of the .28 Nosler... but this comes damn near to hitting 5 MILs to 1000! (5.3 MIL with my conditions set)

.257 wby would still outclass it, just needs faster twist barrels. Now 270 rpm would be cool if it could match or better 6.8 western.
@wheelchairhillbilly Жыл бұрын
Yah, I'd say just tighten the twist on the 257. To make a bit of a gap, I might sooner go with 24, but even that might not be much better than a tighter twist 240wby.
@marcmoore4115 Жыл бұрын
@@wheelchairhillbilly the .240 Wby is only bsrely more powerful than a 6 Creed though, even with the faster twist rates imo it just doesn't make sense. A faster twist .25 cal capable of pushing those 135gr at 3000-3200fps would be an awesome cartridge for all around performance both for hunting and target shooting. I can see the idea of a .25 RPM being cool, it might be a bit too overbore, but could still work well. I'm not sure what velocities it might get. I agree with the other comment that a .27 RPM would be very cool. 175gr going really fast would be fun.
@Drivapete Жыл бұрын
Try seating the bullet out some more, you have plenty of freebore using a longer, heavier lead core bullet. Also, try H 1000 or RL 25 with a Fed 215 match primer. I have the same exact rifle and it works great for me.

135 grains is right in the wheelhouse of that new 270 WSM I just picked up. Even though it may be possible to shoot bullets heavier than in published data per caliber, it just seems to me like the rifles perform best within those specified bullet weight parameters. That's why I own so many I guess, rather than try to cook up loads I hope will work. After all, the gun, powder, and bullet manufacturers have done a lot more professional testing than I'm ever going to do. Had a buddy whose 300 WinMag blew up on him trying to push heavier bullets at higher velocities. He don't do that no more.

Great video, and I hope you don't give up on it. In my opinion h1000, or retumbo would probably produce better accuracy, and be better velocity with that large of a bullet, but you never know. In my opinion, if the cold bore shot always hits the same spot, a tiny group size isn't as important.

I would try the next slowest burn rate powder , that might be the ticket ! I think 7828 is slightly faster than optimal for the 135s . Maybe an RL 25 or Retnmbo could work , I think it’s worth a try !……..

Given the velocity of the cartridge and the heat you'll generate, methinks you need to try one of these loads in a target rig, rather than a hunting rifle. Specifically, a fat, or "bull" barrel.

I want to congratulate you on what appears to me a successful experiment that challenges the established "understanding" of ballistics. Too often, this community, and the world writ large, seems to take established parameters and never even thinks to question whether this is a boundary that can be pushed. The "math" says its impossible and therefore dont even try... but as you are discovering, maybe the math is overly conservative or incorrect itself? My wife is interested in trying .257 Weatherby as her "big gun" down the road, this has given me quite a bit to think about concerning the calibers flexibility..
@ReloadingWeatherby Жыл бұрын
Elevation plays a big role in this.
@drakegrizzell4258 Жыл бұрын
@ReloadingWeatherby That may very well be the case, but then again perhaps the velocity, rifle, or other factors may play as much or more a role too. Essentially, this proves that more experimentation with other variables is warranted. Congratulations, you have fascinated me with this concept!
