Using a cutoff wheel carefully grinding two sides flat will allow you to break loose with vise grips. About ready to do mine the second time. I believe the problem is that the tools are stronger metal than the hardware/ zinc infused bolt. 6 point socket only and still rounded after half a dozen changes. I plan on upgrading my plug to a higher grade of metal. Oem seems like it is made of soft metal. Never had this problem with previous vehicles and this is the newer one I've owned. So... if you can't get an extractor on it, a careful grind can work. Hit the pan and might as well hit your foot.

I change oil every 5k instead of the recommended 10 so I don't normally care about what stays in the engine.

Jesus no!😂 That was going great til you put a gun on it with a floppy old UJ on the end. Get the socket to fit tight and use a long bar for power with control. Failing that, unscrew the bolt by chiselling it round at the flange. As for the repair, it looks like you've drilled into an aluminium sump and a steel sump plug? The chances of those threads holding for long are not good. Also, if you're going to introduce silicone, put it between the bolt and the sump. Smothering it over the bodge is only any use if and when the new bolt fails so you're kind of admitting defeat before you start. Mate, this is the kind of repair you do on your own car when you're 17 and don't know any better... and which you never tell a soul about 🤣
@doit_vehicles2 жыл бұрын
Most of what you said it's common sense and I agree with . I have to add the point of any DIY repair is to fix the issue as cheap as possible with the tools you have . The fix you saw , it worked perfect over 2 years with 2 oil changes and zero leaks . The surface where I drilled was tick enough to hold any threads . The car was old and the majority of these situations will occure on old cheap cars . Very few have access to a car lift therefore using a long bar under the car while on jack stands it's impossible . I am happy I got the chance to work on this extreme situation where the bolt has completely merged with the other surface ( it became a part of the oil pan ) and share with others a simple almost free solution . Fortunately , for most people just following the first step I mentioned in the video will undo the bolt .

@@doit_vehicles, I think he means weld a nut on top of the drain bolt as the bolt is made of steel. Weld in the hole of the nut that sits on top of the drain bolt, then turn with a wrench. You may have to weld several nuts before drain plug loosens.
@doit_vehicles6 жыл бұрын
@@RamonLFrancisco To put the content of this video in a better context to avoid misinterpretations : Long story short : This is meant to be as a last solution after you tried to loosen the bolt with common methods like : breaker bar with a long pipe extension on it , holding the socket fully engaged while applying the twisting force , impact guns , bolt extractor kits and so on ! So , please try those first , before cutting the bolt as I did ! If you manage to remove the bolt , replace it or at least replace the couper gasket ! Please note that : by drilling the oil panel is completelly safe since any metal fragments will be either drain out together with the old oil or stopped by the new oil filter and won't damage your engine ! But again cut the bolt ONLY AS THE LAST SOLUTION ! Another method would be cutting the head of the bolt , driling a hole through the bolt , and try to remove the remaining old bolt with a screw extractor ; But there is no guarantee for that to work ! On that situation you will need a new drain bolt and the treads might be damaged as well ; so you might end up doing the same thing as I did at the end of this video especially if the screw extractor won't work . Long story : This particular car is a 25 years old Volkswagen Transporter which has been sitting for meny years since it was build for people with disabilities . The oil change have been done through the fill up cap , therefore the drain bolt have not been opened for many years and it got extremely stuck ( welded on ) . If you notice there is a larger surface of contact betwen the bolt and the panel ( compared with usual drain bolts) , therefore a larger surface got welded/stuck and needs to be loosen ! On workshop they tried with pneumatic impact guns , they tried with braker bar + extension pipe ( A LOT OF FORCE ) and as a result the bolt was still there and they have done the oil change by opening & removing the whole oil panel ! Then when the car arrive to me , I tried with a 1200 lbs impact gun for 50 seconds (I had it on video) continuously with no result except of rounding the bolt AFTER 50 seconds of full power on ! ( which I never seen before ) . Than I tried what you could see in the video and again the bolt was still stuck . Any extractor kits WON'T be able to work on this particular situation since the maximum twisting force have been applied previously while the bolt had the hexagonal shape inatct . Usually a bolt gets rounded up by not holding the socket fully on while applying the twisting force which was not the case this time ! Welding a bolt on top won't help either since , again , it was applied the maximum twsiting force possible while the bolt was intact ( not rounded ) not to notice that not meny people have welding mashines willing to use them on removing drain bolts , plus- that would most likely snap plsu - you might have to lift the car really high at a workshop, to do this job safely / corectly . Finally I used this method ( to cut the bolt ) since it's cheaper , it works, it's relativelly easy to do , it's convenient for meny people who have this similar situation and it's 100% safe as even today there are no oil leaks or metal fragments in the engine ( lol ) . If it would be a 1 milion dolars Ferari with the same problem I would just invest in a new oil pan with new oil plug but ONLY after , I drilled the hole in the old panel and plug it with a DIY oil drain bolt on !

@doit_vehicles4 жыл бұрын
That method of using a pump to suck the oil makes the drain plug stuck (like on this car ) . There is no benefit to use a pump but actually a couple of issues : - drain plug will get stuck - you have no guarantee that all the old oil is out - not all the cars have the dipstick tube large enough to fit the pump - since on meny cars you must get under to change the filter the best is to also drain the oil .
