Doja Cat, Her Fans & Parasocial Relationships

Doja Cat has been eating her fans up the last few months and recently her relationship with problematic comedian J. Cyrus has her fans divided on wanting to support her. Doja has told her fans that she doesn't know them and that she doesn't really care what they think. She's not wrong about the critique on fans and their parasocial relationships with celebrities and artist but also they play a role in maintaining said relationship.

Someone mentioned something important in relation to Doja, she clearly dislikes her fans being all up in her business but she literally LIVES on the internet. She's always tweeting, doing lives (& tiny chats), she fueled these relationships by constantly interacting with her fans, even to an unhealthy extent. The solution to this problem is so simple she should just hire someone to handle her social media and logoff. Yes her fans need to understand boundaries but at the end of the day that is the price of fame. She isn't the first celebrity to go through this ND unfortunately she won't be the last, but she should learn from her peers ND take a step back. At the end of the day those stans have made her what she is and it's gonna bite her in the ass when her records don't sell.

I agree with her when it comes to parasocial relationships and treating the artist you support as some untouchable god/goddess that you know personally, when you don’t. I have a huge problem with Stan culture. But there are people who support her who see her latest behavior and actions as quite odd, and she can’t handle the criticism. She is hanging out with a really questionable person to say the least, and she’s lashing out at people who would defend her. tbh this whole ordeal shows why worshiping celebrities is such a bad thing to do.

@@757Princess So, she's sort of creating the issue she's upset about? Interesting... Now, her comments about going to be alone make sense, BUT it still won't erase the issues she's created. She should just take a page out of the book from some other celebs; they post relevant things about themselves (tours, albums drops, merch drops, appearances, movies, etc), might even post a meme or two every now and again, drop some pictures, might make a post about supporting some recent hashtag or something, but other than that, they stay quiet. I like celebs who move that way, tbh. I don't want or need to know about them like that.

Her response is completely annoying, bc her fans know she doesn’t know them, and when a celebrity says they love their fans we know what they mean, so her talking about it so literally is ridiculous. I agree. She knew damn well what they meant. 😑 She just wanted to play dumb and be nasty. It’s just upsetting because a lot of her fans are young and there’s a good chance that she was talking with a child like that. I remember when Michael Jackson spoke about the time he caught Madonna being rude to a fan and he checked her on the spot in front of everyone. You can have boundaries. But don’t disrespect the people who love your work enough to spend their last dime on your concerts/albums. At the end of the day, the labels use the fans’ perception of you in order to gage whether or not they should drop you. Maybe Doja is self-sabotaging because she wants to go back to being normal. That’s valid. But she shouldn’t take it out on other people, especially young people who are very emotionally fragile. That’s what made me lose respect for her.

All of this doja stuff really makes me glad I gave up on stan culture many years ago. I used a be a very hardcore koreaboo back in 2014 for a good 3-4 years to the point where the first thing I would think off when I wake up in the morning Is these boybands that sell characteristics and personalities for coins. then a switch just happened and I realized that these celebrities ain't worth drooling over when I got my own issues to deal with. I think that a lot of people tend to forget that these celebrities live in a completely different reality from us regular folk. Not to say that celebrities can't be genuinely good ,down to earth people but at the end of the day when you accumulate millions and millions of dollars your no longer a regular common folk and your attitude towards life and people in general changes and usually not for the better I still do like celebrities and follow them to a certain degree but the days of heavy stanning on social media are long gone and I feel alot better that I did

I think certain celebrities are actively manipulative. I may be popping a tendon with the reach, but the extreme end of this type of dynamic can turn nasty fast (thinking of Ballinger and various other characters, certain fanbases having legal action being filed against them because of the alleged encouragement to engage in hate campaigns, etc.). Public figures being able to just enter people’s dms, sometimes vulnerable people, has always felt iffy to me because of the power dynamics. They attract and court some seriously obsessive behaviour, which is part and parcel of such high investment and attachment. Society needs to catch up and fast, I feel like we’re still behind on internet phenomena even though it’s been a part of daily life for 2 decades.

I don’t think you’re reaching either. You only touched on it at the end, but the ratio of media literacy is incredibly low compared to the media consumed. At some point, we have to tip from simply consuming for fun (we’re already knee deep in info-tainment that gets chaotic) to actually understanding what’s happening TO US with the media we consume. And I’m defining “media” here as the actual definition: the plural/multiple mediums of sharing/consuming info & content (not “the media” as in news outlets). Media literacy is what I was studying for my masters degree, so this is all super interesting (and concerning).

This Doja Brat situation is so interesting, because it’s a lesson in how the relationship between an artist and their fanbase is symbiotic, you can’t reach a certain level without significant public support. Now 800k people have apparently unfollowed her on Instagram, the public are realising their power Yes her comments about not loving people she doesn’t know are valid, yet days before she was tweeting ‘love you guys!’ When talking about her upcoming tour. The same fandom name she lambasted her fans for, is one she has chosen for them previously. Telling people to get jobs and put down phones is ludicrous, coming from someone who is constantly online, being an overgrown troll. Too much hypocrisy and inconsistency. Denigrating people for liking your previous music, is a self drag rooted in feelings of inadequacy and wanting to be accepted and validated by music snobs/purists. It’s actually quite sad, because you can tell most of this is misdirected anger and she’s really mad at her label. And if she is doing all this to lose support, it’s definitely working 🤷🏾‍♀️

When you’re dating someone, people are gonna want to know where this person came from and the background of the person. Not to be bring other artist into it, but it’s the same with Nicki. The thing about Doja is she have used her parasocial relationship to her advantage. She was the one who named her fanbase and three days before the mess, she told them that she loved them…and it was the first time. She’s inconsistent and is incredibly rude. I feel like people who aren’t even a casual fan won’t understand the full issue. This man she’s dating have targeted her own fans and when they tried reaching out to her, she blocked them. That’s why Doja is losing fans. Not just because of her attitude but because of her fling back and forth with the fans. This time she went too far. I get she doesn’t want to be famous but it’s a thing about respect for another human being which she clearly does not care about.

However, I still can’t get my head around trashing her fans for liking her previous albums. Celebs have been around for thousands of years, actually. But most of the younger entertainers obviously have no media training. Say what you will about Tom Cruise, but I remember one time on a red carpet a guy sprayed water in his face or something like that, pranking him, and even though Tom was clearly angry, he chided the man in a way where you could find no fault in the response. Tom's a weirdo too, but he had to be recorded low-key (like when he ranted about people on-set not following COVID regulations) to catch him going off, and even then it was justified. He doesn't hop on social media talking out of pocket. Neither does Beyoncé. Because they have the maturity and training to know better. These people act like they're Mozart or Da Vinci or something when they're just p-ssy popping pop stars. Like, I know media changes, but sit down somewhere.
