If you want better sound avoid gaming headsets like the plague. Buy a pair of openback headphones and a soundcard like the Asus Xonar DGX it has dolby headphone built in with 3 different modes. Also has some extra features like being able to turn the virtual speakers around you for fun effects. Use DVD-Audio discs and listen to the surround on those. I may post some Dolby Headphone encoded music from surround discs. Then people will even stereo headphone set ups can getball the effects.

It kinda runs in the background, but you will notice the difference in sound with EVERYTHING. All sounds you hear, whether music or video, each sound comes from a different position of the speaker in your headphones 🎧
