I gotta be honest here. no DV in 2020 on 500$ consoles is a major let down. Lots of people I know use their consoles as 4K players, and now with newer and cheaper oleds coming out every year it's not a gimmick anymore. I'm personally fine with just HDR but for that price you should just have it at your disposal.

I was saying in general streaming 4k sucks compared to physical 4k discs. 4k streaming has so much compression for streaming that it is nowhere near the quality of a disc. Also it's proven that less and less people use consoles for streaming thanks to smart tvs, rokus, Apple TV and whatever other dedicated streaming boxes people have. I turn my playstation on to play video games not watch TV. And I'll bet you all those companies will support it once enough people have it and are using it on ps5. It takes time and money to make it compatible. Pretty pointless to spend the money if the majority of people are not streaming on a ps5.

Hey Shane, have you checked the audio playback on the PS5 Streaming apps. I was expecting to get back DD+ playback like in most devices but even with Dolby bitstream enabled I only get standard DD. Is it a me problem or are the native PS5 streaming apps not supporting DD+? I find it really odd if it doesn’t. I know that the blu ray app will support Atmos TrueHD when plugged in directly to my receiver and Atmos DD+ when hooked up to my TV, so the DD+ support should be there somewhere. I just can’t figure it out.

Thanks for the vid. I also wouldn't have thought to check for atmos support for the discs once I saw it wasn't on the streaming apps. Pretty solid 4k player for people that didn't own a dedicated one. Hopefully it will grow the UHD physical disc scene a bit for more movies in the future since ps5 will be such a big seller over the years to come!

I'm getting mine primarily for games, I have been wanting a 4K Blue-Ray player and have a Samsung TV so the lack of Dolby Vision isn't an issue for me at the moment. I'm just glad it does Bitstream (Dolby), so it will do the sound on my setup in Atmos. I already have an Apple 4K TV so I'll carry on using that for streaming Netflix, Disney + etc.

Sony opted for using their own ‘sound processor’ (supposedly a 3D one) that’s compatible with Dolby Atmos, but I have yet to see anyone mention it yet. Sony didn’t want to pay Dolby for the rights to use it with the PS5, I’m hoping this will change if people ask enough .

I've been looking at the Yamaha V6a to use with this but people have said there is a hdmi 2.1 bug and it doesn't support 4k/120hz. Do you know if your setup does? I cannot decide between the digital and disc version. The only reason to get the disc version was for pre owned games and the occasional blu ray, but it sounds like I'm best just streaming 4k using plex on my nvidia shield.

I tried the same confirguration but my yamaha av (rxv583) shows DTHD and not Atmos (which is different), at 5:01, the playstation player on the right shows "Dolby Audio-TrueHD", are you sure that the signal is Atmos and not Dolby True HD ? I tried a lot of stuff but I can only get DTHD and not Atmos. I have a sony x700 and the Atmos works fine with it. Thanks for your help :)

So the Playstation does support Dolby Atmos? You got an Atmos signal to your receiver? You can always select it on the player because that audio option will be there but whether the PS5 actually plays it correctly is a different thing.

Just for gaming. Found my 4K Smart TV has a great media setup on its own. And with voice I can just pop over to whatever app I want to stream from and leave PS5 if I need a gaming break with almost no waiting. Pretty seamless.

@@tonydjpp a few things to consider. The source or movie file in your hardrive/server must have DV & DA. Your TV must support DV & DA. Your receiver, if NVIDIA is plugged through receiver, must support DV & DA. The latest NVIDIA Shield supports DV & DA. Apps like Netflix, Prime, VUDU in NVIDIA Shield will passthrough DV & DA. Let's talk about Plex supporting DV...I'm not sure and I don't have a file on my hardrive to confirm it, however I have a file with DA and through Plex I can confirm on my Marantz's (receiver) screen display - Dolby Atmos. Hope that helps!

PS5 DOLBY VISION UPDATE: On 23/03/22 Sony released a new firmware on PS5 that makes ALLM mandatory on Sony tvs so you can't change picture mode to other than Game. Most people are ok with that because they don't know what they are missing. By switching the HDMI signal format from Enhanced to Dolby Vision on a Sony tv, although it is not officially supported yet, you can now actually have the results of Dolby Vision (greater highlights, contrast, and vibrant colors) when you apply the exact settings showed in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWizeZhvopl5hNE after you skip the introduction to 18:03 Watch and learn how to adjust the picture settings on your Sony Bravia tv ( XH90 or X900H and others ) for smooth motion and clarity in games without input lag. At 24:17 you can see how to switch in Dolby Vision, in case you don't know. Be ready to be amazed as now on all consoles, you can turn every 30fps and 60fps game to look like 120fps and also, on ps5 only, you can even play at native 120fps with these effects similar to dolby vision, a combination which is not regularly supported on sony tvs. Probably this is possible because 120fps games are never at 4K but at a little lower resolution, so they don't reach the bandwidth limits. On series X you need to choose 120fps or Dolby Vision and most likely this will be the case for ps5 too, when official dolby vision support arrives. On a Ps5 you should try at 120fps performance mode Call of Duty Vanguard (with FidelityFX Cas on strength 1) and Uncharted Legacy of Thieves, with the 'graphics' picture mode according to the video (and with motion blur turned off) to see the smoothest motion ever, combined with crisp graphics and unprecedented clarity. Also at 60fps try Gran Turismo 7 and Grid Legends which are by far the most impressive when combined with the 'custom' mode of the video and offer the closest to reality graphics you have ever seen. Cyberpunk, GTA V (ps5 upgrades), Days Gone and almost all titles by EA have this impressive DV-like effect. Some 30fps third-person games unavoidably have some artifacts around the character and can't handle very quick movements but it is still better than in game mode, having all the juddering (which on large panels, 75inch and above is unbearable). A stable frame rate is absolutely necessary to interpolate 30fps, so make sure you haven't filled up your system storage because that can cause frame drops and ruin the post-processing. Motion blur should be lowered, not turned off for 30fps. In case you are hesitant to try picture modes other than game as proposed, you should know this: The website Rtings.com measured input lag with interpolation on a default picture mode of X900H which has other laggy settings included and these are to blame for the greatest portion of the 87.2ms lag, not interpolation. Proof that is possible is that Samsung managed to offer a game mode combined with interpolation at only 20ms of input lag. If you try the exact settings you will have a concrete proof for yourself that there is no input lag at 60fps and there is a minor, really playable lag at 30fps. The only requirements are to play a game with a stable frame rate (almost all console games except few, like Elden Ring) and to turn motion blur off and lower the sensitivity on both axis at game options. Players who are used in turning around not smoothly, but very quickly and with sudden moves in competitive multiplayer, are the only ones that should stick to game mode. If you own a series X apply the settings at the end of the video with dolby vision enabled, which is also infamous of being laggy on Sony tvs because there is no game mode there. (a small correction on the dolby vision bright and dark modes: it's actually better to adjust them exactly the same as the non-dolby vision modes, cinema for 30fps and custom for 60fps respectively.) If you own a Ps5 apply the regular settings first exhibited at 18:03, but switch the HDMI signal to dolby vision and turn HDR to always on.

If you want DV go standalone if you're fine with regular hdr and dolby atmos like me then this wouldn't be a bad choice because the picture quality is superb.

I'm new to these setups... but why wouldn't you connect the PS5 to the receiver instead of direct to the TV? Instead of (somehow?) passing the audio signal through the TV, into the receiver? (Or am I misunderstanding the setup?

To get the best sound connect ps5 directly to the receiver. Unless of course if one has old school receiver that doesn't support modern video passthrough, then connect to tv.

If you could can you check the video signal on your tv like you checked the audio to see if it’s 2160p my ps5 is playing Alita uhh disc in hdr 1080p atmos and all . I can’t get 2160p and it’s the only uhd disc I have to test

@@therealshanelee Tempest 3D Audio will support surround sound setups as well and is more than just "fake" surround sound. It is rolling out in this order Headphone then TV/sound bars, then last Home Theater. The head phone tech is more of a binaural 3d audio experience rather than virtual surround sound. If you have Spiderman for PS5 check it out with some headphones plugged into the controller you may be surprised.

Whenever I put a Blu-ray or 4K disc in the player and press play, the PS5 either crashes and abruptly shuts off, or the Disc Player app errors. However, it works fine for games. Anybody else out there with this problem and/or a potential fix?

Disappointed in the lack of support for Atmos and DV. I would hope they patch this later, but I'm not super optimistic. Considering an X700 or X800 as we speak. Any opinions?

my x700 is great for dv playback. Be warned not all UHD blu ray movies take advantage of HDR. Check out HDTVtest channel where he reviews HDR use in movies.

I've got Netflix on my C9 and prime video to watch Dolby vision content although I gotta say sometimes I prefer the hdr10 over the dolby vision for some titles. Not every film is made equal and sometimes the film studios half arse the dolby vision and hdr

Getting my soundbar to play dolby atmos from the PlayStation was a pain. My 4k tv didn't support passthough so there was no atmos to my soundbar. I had to rewire my PlayStation so the hdmi went into my soundbar so it skips the tv processing the sound. Problem solved and now I'm enjoying dolby atmos
