I absolutely adore the stacked cat house... I was wondering how four cats was going to translate to a two-story house, and it honestly didn't occur to me that the walls v. roof would be the answer... But it works so well! I particularly like how the shape of the lowest level really echoes the cone it is painted as, and the way that both the roofs end up with similar textures reads well to the eye... Which just speaks to the eye and planning that went into the first design. I'm glad you went for this combination; I think it may be my favorite Dollar Store Makeover yet!

As to the switched sides for the color; they painted it from the front to match their colors. When they face the house, that is the order the colors go in. They painted so that they will match when coming home (or so I choose to believe), so don't be sorry that it matches when they are facing away because they love to come home.

If you're trying to get rid of little plastic imperfections (like the hearts on the house) you could buy a little electric engraver pen. It's basically a very easy to control sander that looks like a ballpoint pen. It's easier to control than a dremel at least. I use it to remove stubborn supports from 3d printed minis. You could also use it to engrave designs INTO the plastic (or wood I guess?) It's a handy little art tool.
