You can take a cheap pumpkin like the ones at DT and put joint compound on them. That will give you the ceramic look you're looking for. The ones you made are so cute !!!. Thanks for sharing.

I tried this with pumpkins I got on sale at Joanns. It worked well, I mixed baking soda in the paint to give them more texture. The method I used called for rubbing in some flour at the end to give it that aged terra cotta look. I also made the stems longer and twisted with air dry clay.

I think they are good. If you wanted it to look more like pottery barn's, you have to cut out the eyes, nose and mouth, or maybe just a matt black paint.

Here’s tip you might try too. Mix baking soda with glue. Should be the texture of muffin mix. Then add paint to the mix and stir it up. If it gets too thin then add more baking soda. Makes paint a great texture. Takes a little longer ti dry but it’s worth it.

I think they turned out really sweet! I’d have made the eyes, nose & mouth a darker orange or brown to give more of a 3D effect.

I think the original look had that white “dusty” look. Maybe that is where the baking soda came into play? Adding it to paint definitely gives it more of a concrete/plaster texture, tho!! 😍

Think I am going to try and do this to some of my terra cotta planters for the effect. Great job trying, I am not into jackolanterns. But love a simple pumpkin.

If you are going to use your planters outside and if you'd put regular plants in them you need to seal them inside and out with a clear matte spray or you could paint one on both inside and outside of your pots. I painted some waves on those kind of pots and found out the hard way that you need to seal the paint. After I did that the pots lasted a long time and the paint didn't peel.

I love this ! I have looked at those pottery barn ones and love them, but not the price tag. I think that I might take some of the small dollar tree foam pumpkins and do this same technique .

I think it looks pretty close. I think I would've removed the jute hanger and puttied the holes before painting and maybe mixed the baking soda in the paint, but I love the effect you got with your method. You really used just the right amount of colors to get the terra cotta!! Love these!

Dollar Tree has regular paint brushes in the tool area that don't shed their bristles. Also, there is a product called Gesso which isn't carried at DT but if you use a coat of white gesso on the DT wood pieces then possibly DT paints will cover better.

That's a great tip. I know when I use chalk paint first as a base coat it does not soak up the paint as much.

It might have helped to mix the baking soda in with the paint. I've done it before. It comes out beautifully. I like that you showed the video weither it failed or it was a success. I think it's great to show people to help keep some one from failure or to just show that it don't always work out and that it's OK. I think you diy came out great.
