One thing I have to point out is that in a lot of really low-income or semi-rural areas they do not have access to groceries the way that we do when we are closer to cities. Dollar Tree is one of the stores that can be found almost everywhere, and you showing how it is possible to make really delicious stuff with what you can buy there is so wonderful because it also shows the accessibility for people who cannot get to even a Walmart. I loved this! Budget meal face-offs are my jam.

I love how Josh is legitimately a great chef but he doesn't disparage low cost ingredients with fillers and things. It's so refreshing to see a really good chef say positive things like that. I saw Jamie Oliver being absolutely disgustingly classist about chicken nuggets & other processed foods & trying to convince children of the same. Not even in a vegan animal cruelty way or anything, just classist. And the kids didn't care, they still liked the nuggets better. No, it's not the same as the other product, but sometimes it does the job better & is tastier (& less work).

I love this so much. The fact that Josh doesn’t judge the cheaper products is amazing. Dollar Tree has saved me quite a few times, being able to get beef for $1.25. It fills your belly and can be spread really far. I’m glad he proved how tasty it can be!
@tinntinnamp

The beef isn't 1.25, it's that per serving. get a cheap bag of rice and some beans, WAY healthier and that will fill your belly with real food. as a lifelong poor person, my main Taste Advice is it's often cheaper to get a can of chili for nachos, and it's also pre-seasoned (to whatever extent) so if you're in a pinch it's easy. It's also nice because you don't have to fridge or freeze it like with whatever version of ground beef! Really these nachos, and burritos, can be made with shelf stable stuff, which can help when you don't have access to that - hotels, hiking, in a tough spot, unhoused.

I love that Josh doesn’t judge based on ingredients, he judges on taste. Sometimes you do what you can. Sometimes you cook what you can afford. Sometimes you cook what your family will eat. Out of all of the videos they put out the ones where they use cheaper ingredients are my absolute favorite. That's exactly why the shelves are always picked over or bare. Would love to see some creative suggestions on substitutions/dollar tree products as well. My one trick I can contribute - if you want your crumbled beef smooth with texture closer to a paste or mince, it helps to add about 1/4 cup of water while cooking and stir it vigorously; the water breaks the meat up fine so you don't have big chunks which you may not want when making tacos or burritos or ravioli or stuffing tubes of cannelloni. The water also steams to help the meat cook through and will mostly disappear. If you're draining it in a strainer with big holes, throw a piece of paper towel inside so you don't lose all the meat through the holes in your colander.

what’s crazy is that in the small town i grew up in has a dollar tree that shares the same parking lot as our walmart. it’s actually a walmart with a subway in it in the same parking lot as a dollar tree with a marshall’s attached 🤣

The taco bell beef is a liquid when it's fresh out the bag from the food Jacuzzi, then it thickens up as the water evaporates out if it stays on the line a while

Love how Josh is so impatient he cuts the bags of tortillas open with the knife instead of using the openings

Mythical Kitchen is such comfort media for me. I was feeling really down after work, but Josh realizing he's paused too long trying to figure out what colored the dollar tree spices and shouting, "I don't know how to read!" was the first thing that made me smile.

I read an article once, about a low income small town, that didn't have a grocery store, but was getting a dollar tree. The b writing the article was acting like it was the worst possibility, saying that it should've gotten a real grocery store.. like a WHOLEFOODS.

I've never seen a box of 20 patties at the Dollar Tree, Family Dollar maybe, which I know the two stores have combined in many areas, but still. The most "beef" I've seen at the Dollar Tree are single patties or those frozen dinners.

I'm gonna argue that pace is a bigger brand name than Rico's. In general, sure, like for salsa or other things. But when it comes to canned "Mexican" (using the term very loosely) cheese, Rico's is the brand.

Just so everyone knows… soaking beans before cooking them does not remove the boom boom downstairs 😂 I didn’t know that people pre soaked beans that come in a can. We usually use dry ones. You would assume if they come in a can, they have been soaking but who am I to judge?

My only issue is Josh cutting open the tortilla bag.. Use the zip loc. Especially since you're not going to cook the whole bag. Be good to do more videos that not only save money but reduce waste
