What a sad, poignant but beautiful song written and performed by Miss Parton! Of course what's amazing about it is how timeless both the lyrics and melody are- as if they could have been from a folk song from the rural parts of England or (with a bit of translation), Wales, Scotland or Ireland. Of course, what's amazing about Miss Parton's 'style' is how often her songs hearken back to themes and melodies from centuries' past. It's interesting how when she first toured the UK back in the early 1970's virtually everyone predicted that the British would deride and snub her music but instead they adored it from the start because they recognized it as sounding like THEIR folk music! Oh, and while I'm sorry that she had to endure heartbreak (and I respect if not admire her call to keep whatever may have happened private), she was able to make good use of it for a fantastic song!

I will never forget the first time I saw this video. I was employed at Sugar Hill Records, doing radio promotions. We all watched this video in the office. What an amazing song and performance. That look at the end with the tear... such a heartbreaking, perfect performance. What a great lady and the most amazing singer! Sunday night, I learned that Jim Mills, who played banjo on the album, passed on Friday. RIP, Jimmy.

They were preceded by "Heart songs: Live from Home" in which Dolly performed a wide array of music. There were many folk songs: Barbara Allen, Wayfaring Stranger, Mary of the Wild Moor, as well as songs she wrote like Down from Dover, Coat of Many Colors, My Blue Tears, Smokey Mountain Memories. To make the concert even better, Dolly's parents were in the audience and she had them stand for applause, since they had inspired their creative daughter. Another great album by Dolly before her venture into bluegrass was Hungry Again which had such gems as Salt in my Tears and When Jesus Comes Calling for Me.
