Listen to three Dolly Parton songs in this order: Down from Dover (1971), Mountain Angel (live performance), Little Sparrow (live performance acapella wearing a blue dress). They portray a common mountain tragedy from three vantage points. Each song is haunting as it tells a story as old as time.

This is my all time favorite dolly song! I love watching her perform this. Dolly is amazing singer, songwriter, performer & such a storyteller. You can feel the authenticity seeping from her. She’s as downhome & sweet on stage as she is off. Love dolly! A true living legend. 👠😇❤️😭⛰🧚🏻♀️

The story in this song is very similar to the story told in "Down from Dover" and both songs make me cry. Dolly's ability to tell a story is unparalleled. I first became a fan before I even knew her name. All I knew was that she was "that girl who sings 'Dumb Blonde'." That was back in 1966 and I'm still a fan. I think it's remarkable that at the age of 77 she is still going strong and in fact is still picking up new fans in her Rockin' Years.

This must be my favourite Dolly song. For some reason as a gay man I can relate to this. Dunno. Still: I wish she had performed this song when I saw her in the Netherlands years ago. This is such a good song...

That's Chris Thile, of Nickel Creek fame, on mandolin. I can't ID the other instrumentalists, but I'm guessing it's probably the same ultra-high-powered group that backed her up on "Little Sparrow."
