Dolphin Strand Feeding on Kiawah Island

One of the most unique and amazing opportunities during a visit to Kiawah Island is to witness dolphin's strand feeding. Strand feeding occurs when dolphins herd a school of fish onto a beach, sandbar or mudflat. The dolphins then launch their bodies out of the water to feed on the stranded fish.
Kiawah Island is one of the few places in the world where you can witness strand feeding. The area's Bottlenose Dolphins can be viewed engaging in this activity two hours before and after the low tide near Sams Inlet on the west end of Kiawah Island. Captain Sams Inlet is where the Kiawah River meets the Atlantic Ocean and separates Kiawah from Seabrook Island.
If you make the trip to Kiawah Island to view the dolphins strand feeding at Captain Sams Inlet, please make sure you respect the strict guidelines. That includes staying more than 15 yards from the water’s edge. Also, it is illegal to touch, harass or attempt to feed dolphins. That could result in fines of up to $100,000 and up to one year in jail per violation.
