The appam you get in Kerala is different from what you had there. In the Kerala appam you don't add any dal it is made just with raw rice and coconut and for fermentation you either add yeast or toddy. It is best tasted with veg or non veg stew or black channa curry or veg kuruma.

Batata Vada near Patkar school rajaji path 4. Food item for fast(upvas) in Deepak snacks corner, Bhanu nagar near saraswat bank.
