Todays video I'm going to show you an easy way to double dome frequency, no special tools needed and anybody can do it. Super useful if you need to build a stronger, or bigger dome. Buy dome plans at geo-dome.co.uk

Paul, first and foremost I'd like to thank you for the amazing work you do and share with us here. I'd like to ask you a question I'm not sure you've answered before - how feasible is the idea of building a bevelled frame dome house, not just a greenhouse, but a proper one? Is it a pipe dream or just a matter of upscaling the beams and adding some sturdier walls and insulation? In theory, a DIY house like that should be fairly cheap and heat-efficient, which could somewhat help alleviate the impossibility of getting decent housing for the current generation (while naturally keeping the landscape high-rise creep-free). I'm a millennial and a dream of having a decent house for a family of my own becomes more of a distant dream with each passing day, but thanks to your channel, it seems I might be able to not only afford an incredible house one day, but be able to build it on my own. What are the risks? The pros and cons of such an undertaking seem fairly obvious, but could there be some caveat that's easy to miss?
@mackyb273 жыл бұрын
I've done that myself. In the end it comes down to what size and what are your skills or means of manufacturing the frames. It also depend on your specific country build and administrative regulations.

I Think we need to formally recognise this as up studding. smart idea could you not get away with it using finished solid panels and simply putting the centre triangle in inside out cancelling out the angles.

What's the hardest thing about building one of these? Would make for an excellent shop.

Hi Paul, Wanted to first say thank you for all that you do to make this world a better place. I can be a little bit naïve sometimes so I have a question for you. Do you think that people can build their own Dome based only on your unity dome video? We’re just now learning to use a table saw and wondering if there are things you assume we all know. I think I may have had the impression that you inferred that if anyone can build a jig, then they can build a dome. I asked this question because I am on such a low budget that I might wait even longer to proceed if I have to purchase detailed plans. Lumber prices are crazy now, especially after the US west coast fires. Between your channel and Life Uncontained, I’m hoping to get the instruction necessary to take on a project above my experience. Do you have earlier videos of when you did interior work like plumbing/electrical and so on? Thanks again Paul! Jill

Looks like you ant to build a small dome house, I'll be doing some videos about this shortly. Yes you can build the unity dome with basic carpentry skills, I'll do a video about that also but I think you may find it difficult to build a full house with all the utilities if you have never done anything like it before. I ill try and post some tutorials because I do get asked this a lot.

Can you repeat this, adding another level of flat triangles inside these, to make an even larger dome of the same frequency? Applying recursively do you ever reach a size of dome where you need to add more full nodes?
@Geo-Dome3 жыл бұрын
Sadly no, you would get hubs that are flat which are not stable, doing it once is ok because you don't get flat hubs, they have an angle because of the dihedral.

Paul, great stuff. Could you link the window hardware you use or something similar? Having a very hard time finding anything like that in the US.
@bwillan3 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't jumping up to a 4V dome with 6 struts vs 3 be a less complex and less expensive solution than all the extra lumber needed to add all the extra triangles to make a 3V into a quasi 6V dome?
@JohnGuest453 жыл бұрын
Its easier to mod the 3v but i`d go for the 4v because it would look better. Modding a 3v into a 6v wont alter the curvature..

Hi Paul, I was wondering what type of clear covering you had on your dome? Is it a polycarbonate material? I have looked in the US for someone who makes this stuff, but everyone wants to sell me the double walled stuff. Can you advise on a brand name or maybe the way to google it so i find what I need. Thank you.

I'm sure he has a video on this but if I remember correctly, it's UV resistant agricultural polytunnel sheeting. If you search for this you will surely find a farm supplier that stocks it.

@@davelowe1977 Hi David, thanks for the reply. Trouble that's what everyone wants to sell me. What I am looking for is a single layer or thickness of polycarbonate. I know its out there. I just can't find anyone who makes it. Dual wall will not work for what I need to do with my system. Thank you for answering my post.
@davelowe19773 жыл бұрын
@@sambrandt3688 Ah - you want something rigid rather than flexible. As I'm sure you know, there are many other transparent and rigid plastics such as acrylic which can be bought in sheet form and cut to size. Have you considered using one of those?
@sambrandt36883 жыл бұрын
@@davelowe1977 Hi David, yes for a very short time LOL. you have to be very careful to pick the right single layer cover. Some plastics do not react very well to direct sun or temp changes. Nasty things happen like glazing and cracking. I am not looking for a yearly repair/change over. There is a single layer polycarbonet out there that I am looking for. I have seen it used to cover a dome. I just need to figure out who makes it and if I can get it here in the US. It's one of those things that should b simple but turn's out to be a pain in the rump to solve.

This does not double the dome frequency. All youve done is attached supports to the frequency of the dome and at the same time defeated the supports because now it is twice as heavy on the same frequency.

No the wood is half the size so weight is the same just more triangles which are smaller, it works great: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHa1e6tjd7Wqadk
