🏔️ Beneath the Paganella -------- {a short story} --------- So I wake up in the Dolomites above Trento It's about 8 and I go to the window and hear "that sound". The sky is greenish red on a background of thick grey which sits like a heavy quilt over the landscape. I open the window and hear the cold drops showering down gently on the garden outside and see the rooftops glisten beneath me. I pick up my phone and scroll through the offerings. 😳 Scott Ross playing Scarlatti! 😊 All is not lost after all! The coffee begins to bubble on the stove, so I pour a cup. I return to the window and hit "play". K. 428 comes on and I watch the drops on the cabbage leaves which seem to echo 🤔...or mimic? the notes being played on the keyboard. ☕ Steam swirls up from my cup as clouds stream up from the valley below as the music plays and my mood throws off the heavy blanket of the night just passed and the day brightens outside. Choral practice later today but until then Hearty breakfast and wood for the fire A walk in the forest behind Tictoc of the coocoo clock to punctuate Tyrolean time Which seems to last forever and today will be filled with the re-echoing of k. 428 in my thoughts -grace Harpsichord M ⛰️🗻🏞️🏔️🏔️🏔️

This may be due to the fact that Kirkpatrick tried to number the sonatas in the order they were written. As time went on, the composer got better. This 34 CD set is a treasure, and I am so grateful to "HarpsichordM" for uploading these. I could never afford these in retirement, and anyhow I would need a wheelbarrow to cart them home.

I believe it is the sound of a particular jack or plectrum returning to its resting position. Il n'y a pas à s'inquiéter. Ces bruits de mécanique sont des douceurs aux oreilles. Because proof of the instrument natural fragility. And exquisite sound. Imagine, I provided Scott with a harpsichord during his years in Québec City.

De 1973 (sur recommandation de et pour succéder à Kenneth Gilbert que la carrière retenait de plus en plus en Europe) jusqu'à ca. 1985-6. C'est alors qu'il a consacré les cinq dernières années de sa trop courte vie aux concerts et enregistrements en Europe. Dont les 555 Scarlatti en une douzaine de mois seulement (Il me disait ''J'en travaille une cinquantaine à la fois puis je passe à la captation sonore. Dans l'ordre exact de l'édition Heugel par Gilbert, sans en sauter aucune, refusant de remettre à plus tard une sonate plus exigeante".

The genius of Domenico Scarlatti is everlasting, and a gift from God to us. In his own way (at least!) he was the most original of the great composers. One of the greatest composers of all time, certainly one of a small handful of the greatest keyboard composers. Even though almost everything he wrote was a binary form harpsichord sonata, even though he created his own unique "version" of binary form that is very different from Bach's. Bach is the only other composer who remotely approached Scarlatti's genius in binary form. All this even though he was sort of a Grandma Moses, who came into his full greatness well beyond the average life expectancy of his time. He had imitators, such as Soler and Seixas, but they were pretty pale compared to the master. There was only one Mimo, and there will never be another.
