A decent amount of late 90s/2000s indie played w/electronica-inspired drumming, too - the New Deal, Lake Trout, the Dismemberment Plan, Hella, the Dillinger Escape Plan (who did a crazy cover of Aphex Twin’s “Come to Daddy”), etc. Ilan Rubin’s drumming w/NIN falls into this category, as well.

They definitely feel like they haven't reached their final form. The web tends to act like Beck/DOMi are sui generis geniuses - which actually feels unfair to them, as they're still growing. While each is clearly a prodigy, there's an undeniable lack of dynamics and space to their playing, and their choices are sometimes show-offy and limited by a desire to broadcast "hip" reference points, e.g. Dilla and Madlib. (Beck, in particular, seems uncomfortable letting his drums sing/do something tuneful, likely because his dry breakbeat tuning rewards speed over tone.) That said: they have an exciting perspective on what jazz can sound like, and they each have very distinctive chops. It's fun watching their evolution in real time. I'm glad they exist and am looking forward to seeing how their ambitions expand over the next few years.
