Demerits : 1. End progeny is not superior than parents 2.linkage drag...that is linkage of genes sometimes effects the process of gene transfer ..so desirable gene transfer maybot occur. 3. Hybridization has to be done many times which is costly and time taking .

Merits : 1. We can know the end result before ..as it is going to be similiar to reccurent parent. 2. no need of testing end result. So we can save 3 to 5 yrs time as no testing process. 3.we can use it under greenhouse i.e., in offseason also we can carryout this process. 4. Less population is required for this process 5.only process where interspecific transfere of desirable genes is seen. 6. Cytoplasm transfere is only possible through this backcross method
