Dominator Exhaust on a Yamaha XT660Z

This is a layman's sound test of the Dominator exhaust installed on Yamaha XT660Z. The main reason to change the exhaust was to reduce the weight by almost 5 kg from the stock exhaust to the Dominator exhaust. The sound was tested without db killer and with two different db killers, medium and hard db killers. Further a catalytic converter was installed in the dominator exhaust pipe.

I love this bike but unfortunately it isn't available in America and that is pissing me off. I loved the sound with the hard DB killer because of the deep bass tone to it. Enjoy it sir.

Have a high sound than the original, its a great because its less weight, and simple, but the sound its than enduro bike.

Did you find any different in how the bike performed with the different dB killers ?

I have only been driving with the hard DB killer as I think the noise is load enough anyway. But with the hard DB killer I feel it has a little more power at low rev, but otherwise the same as the stock exhaust. There was one comment by Rhonwyn below who stated he felt it lost power without a DB killer inserted.

The App I use to measure the sound level is an iPhone app and only gives an indication of the level, although I have tried to measure the sound level as close as I could according to the official guidelines. I use the hard db killer myself as the hard db killer from what I can measure with the app should be legal. I am somewhat in doubt with the medium db killer. But as written it is only measured with an iPhone app (the highest number). You might have to go to an official authority measurement to be sure. The lowest number is an average over time, which I did not take into account.

Hi, i have a MT-03 with the same engine. When you change the exhaust, is it needed to change the settings of the fuel injection or not ?

I have just ended a 10,000 km round trip ranging from sea level to over 2000 m height with the stock settings and the hard db killer in the exhaust with no problem. I do not believe it is necessary to change the settings and actually felt that there was slightly more power at the bottom rpm.

You should only need to change that if you are adding stage 1 or 2 air filters - the exhaust change wont change a thing about how your engine is running. If you are changing the air filters then i suggest buying the Kev fuel mod from Aus. Takes a while for delivery but well worth the £130

You can buy the components for 10€ and build it yourself. No need to order such basic stuff from edge of the world with huge price tag. You will find the parts needed by googling “Tenere mod book.”

Nice sounding pipe! I run a Scorch pipe on my Yamaha tenere 660z , sounds quite similar! Does yours tend to backfire around 3000rpm if you flick the throttle or decelerate?

Because of the AIS system mine backfires during deceleration, but I have not experience any backfire at other conditions.

At the time the video was made the exhaust did not have the EU approval (stamp on exhaust). What I did was to ensure it had the minimum noise level with the hard db killer and I installed a catalytic converter in the pipe. I never tried to get it approved, however, I think it might be possible to get it officially approved at least here in DK, but it does require a new inspection at a test center.

Greetings. I fitted the same on my tenere... but i have no after market catalytic converter like yours. There is no restrictions in south Africa...yet, lol... but have you notice when the DB killer is in there is way more power through the rev range...with the DB killer completely removed, the power is noticeably less... i think it needs a bit of back compresion cause of the cat in the standard exhaust... i love the sound without the dB killer ...but want the power like the db killer inserted. Any advice?? Thanks for your video. Much appreciated

Hi, I have not had any problem with a hot pipe. No melting of bags or anything despite it is very close (millimeter) to the rear fender. The distance from the pipe to my bags are around 3.5 cm and around 1 mm (millimeter) from the fender, so for me no problem.

Hi! Probably a bit too late for this but where can you find the maximum allowed sound level for your bike? I put this exact exhaust on my bike and was paranoid at how loud the it sounded for other people

I think it depends on which country you are in, but in DK the noise limit was 90 DB measured at a certain drive by distance for my bike. As I recall the distance is around 7 meters. I think the best is to ask e.g. Yamaha in your country. They might know.

@@sowfistikated4521 you will find max. sound level for your bike on your bike itself. it is usually writtent on main frame, location: between the triple clamps (front forks holders). There is also your bike's VIN number engraved into the chasis. Also every vehicle has a homologation card. In that card you will find same numbers. At least that's how it is in my country, I am from European union.

​@@andrewsoldan6050 There might be a small difference, but almost unnoticeable, as I recall. I installed the catalytic converter to make it legal in Denmark. And yes, the Dominator exhaust makes loader sound than the stock exhaust even with the hard db killer. I installed the Dominator exhaust primarily for weight loss compared to the original and found a little better torque at the bottom rpm with the hard db killer installed. And then I got used to the higher sound level, for good or worse.

Hi. I've just installed this dominator. And I see a flame from the exhaust. Is it normal?

That is normal with the Air Induction System (AIS) and the shorter pipes compared to the stock exhaust. Here is the text from the service manual: "The AIS burns unburned exhaust gases by injecting fresh air into the exhaust port....." etc. So this will happen typically when speeding down.

The fitment is fairly good, but not perfect in my mind. It did require some fiddling. The noise is acceptable for me at highway speeds with the hard db-killer inserted. It is though a bit loader than the stock exhaust.

It is not E-approved as there is no approval mark on the exhaust I got. But, from what I can measure with the db phone app, it should be below the legal noise level for a Yamaha XT660Z with the hard db-killer inserted. However, again this was measured with a phone app, so...?
