@@Karla_Marie Oksana Omelianchik was the first to do a back to back tumbling sequence, however it wasn't nearly as difficult as what we see here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp3EpGCuhN2Bpqs&t Daniela Silivas was the next gymnast to a back to back sequence similar to this, and Dominique Dawes was inspired by her. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6vYmnmoma18ps0 Dominique elevated the difficulty however as she is the only one who combined multiple acrobatic whips into the pass and added a double sommersault at the end of such a complicated sequence. Each one took the back to back tumbling to the next level, but it culminated with Dawes before they essentially banned it from the Code of Points.

@@kevinhunt7014 They didn’t ban it, they just changed the rules in the CoP to remove all value from a tumbling line done immediately following a previous one. A gymnast could still do this move without penalty, but it receives ZERO credit and would most likely result in an artistry deduction. Also, Dominique Dawes was neither the first nor only gymnast to do back to back tumbling. I believe the devaluing has more to do with the scoring system change around 2006. Once they moved into an open scoring system, gymnasts were no longer limited by the 10.0 start value. This meant that gymnastics could just tumble “more” to get bonus points, and we started seeing people like Shawn Johnson do 5 tumbling passes in a routine. Not only does that turn the event into a tumbling competition, but it also de-emphasizes the role of choreography and the artistry was getting lost. In subsequent codes, they tried to correct this by limiting the maximum tumbling lines to four and eliminating back to back tumbling. The exact reasoning for the change was never explained publicly, but it was allowed long before Dominique Dawes showed up, and wasn’t devalued until after she retired. So it doesn’t make sense to say that they “banned it”, much less because of Dominique. This type of tumbling isn’t even considered to be as difficult as the skills that we’re seeing from gymnastics like Simone Biles or Jade Carey. It is a shame that we don’t see it anymore because it was very visually satisfying. @@captainbryce1 Thanks! I knew I had the true explanation in my memory somewhere. Thanks for explaining it so well. So much has changed in gymnastics since those days, and for a lot of good reasons. But we can still miss these things. One thing that is great they quit doing was putting the gymnasts’ weights on screen to be judged. Look how little and thin the girls were at that time. If the system hadn’t changed as it did, we may never have seen Simone Biles soar as she does. She wouldn’t have been encouraged to be as muscular as she is, those tumbling passes that were so fun to watch were more about stamina than strength. They played well into at 86 lb teenager but what if Dominique Dawes were born into today’s gymnastics world? It would be a whole different set of expectations. I’m glad we had her then and we have Simone and her generation now.

@captainbryce13 жыл бұрын
Back to back tumbling is no longer allowed in the rules for floor in the modern Code of Points. You are allowed up to 4 tumbling lines, and they cannot connect to each other. And no, Dawes is not the only gymnast who's ever done back to back tumbling, although she does have the most complicated sequence. It was first done by Oksana Omelianchik in the mid 80's and then later by Daniela Silivas (who was Dominique Dawes' favorite gymnast). Dawes took what they did and expanded upon it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp3EpGCuhN2Bpqs kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6vYmnmoma18ps0

They didn't ban it, the COP just changed and stopped giving it the bonus it had back then.
@captainbryce13 ай бұрын
@@PhenixJoeAs Tim mentioned in the video, nobody did it quite like this. Oksana Omelianchik was one of the pioneers of back to back tumbling, but Dominique did the most difficult back-back-sequence in gymnastics, first linking it with a double somersault, and then later combining 6 acro elements together. Daniela Silivas had a similar sequence in 1987, and she was the first to use the technique of walking out of the punch front (which Dominique does). But Dominique sequence was still much more difficult. And no, it was not easy (which is why very few have ever done it). The reason it was banned is because they wanted to reduce the time spent tumbling in the routine and devote more to the artistic/dance portion. So no, gymnasts have to earn difficulty using double flipping elements and dance/jump elements rather than combinations.
