“i don’t fit the typical harvard norm” literally wearing a beret
@kellym.67775 жыл бұрын
She's referring to her socio-economic background. Harvard is extremely elitist and many, if not most of the students come from the upper class or extremely wealthy families. so it is a cultural shock when you come from a regular middle or working class family. they usually live in secluded worlds among themselves where wealth and great privilege are considered normal. That's why she implied several times that the school needs more diversity and people from different backgrounds.

Here is my statement: "Harvard is extremely elitist and many, if not most of the students come from the upper class or extremely wealthy families. so it is a cultural shock when you come from a regular middle or working class family". Did I specifically say SIENNA/SHE is from a working class family? I mentioned the working and middle classes to illustrate my point - her point, about Harvard being a Rich ghetto. Imbecile.

LMAO everyone here saying that majoring in gender studies is useless is clearly jealous 1. About not finding a job. She goes to HARVARD. If there are only 7 job openings in the US for people majoring in gender studies, SHE will be the one to get it. Gender Studies are useless only to people who graduated with that degree from lesser-known universities or community colleges. 2. After graduation, most people are gonna do things that are completely different from their major anyways. Harvard students are hot on the job market not because they majored in this or that, they are sought after because they have proven themselves to be the best of the best by getting into and graduating from Harvard. Many companies (especially large ones with their own training facilities) hire graduates from top colleges regardless of major, then train them to perform the tasks. They do so because they know that top school grads are quick to learn, smart, diligent, and adaptive. 3. Traditional money-maker majors like CS and engineering are taught similarly throughout all universities regardless of rank. A CS grad from Harvard will be the same in terms of skills compared to a CS grad from Ohio State. However, at Harvard, liberal arts major students will be at a huge advantage compared to other schools simply because they are taught by professors that are world-changers, learning alongside classmates who will also become world-changers.

@renemocke1615 жыл бұрын
it is not overlooked - it is hailed as a waste of money. pls. what do you do with a gender studies degree that you cannot with any other humanities degree? the field is soo narow. gender studies is a confirmation bias degree, views are not challenged hence a lot of graduates appear intolerant causing a stigma surrounding the degree
@daelyj.ontiveros17785 жыл бұрын
Rene Mocke Rene Mocke you can do a lot with that type of major. Having that degree will help her stand out. Not everyone needs to stay inside the box and follow degrees that are so popularly perused. That will definitely make her stand out. And theses so many things that can be confirmation bias, the student’s attitudes are another subject but she seems like an honest person based on solely this video and she looks happy about what she’s doing. What’s wrong with that?.. Just bc you other people wouldn’t know what to do with it or view it as a waste of money doesn’t mean she does. Her future will be hers and yours and mine will be.. yours and mine.

Ps. I this made me realize how we take choices for granted. I, myself, would’ve never thought of choosing a major like hers simply because I never really hear about it/ has been informed. @renemocke1615 жыл бұрын
@@daelyj.ontiveros1778 what are you even saying? what can she do with a gender studies degree that she cannot with any other? so she should get a degree just to stand out? um mind you a lot of graduates are unemployed. there is a culture pushes people to get degrees even they do not need them; that is why so many Americans are in debt. gender studies is general in a confirmation bias degree, it defeats the purpose of having your thoughts challenged. have you realized gender studies people think the same; man-hating, radical feminism? you are essentially using happiness to avoid actual scrutiny. just because she does not see it as a waste of money does not change the reality of what graduates with the degree are going through. i find it odd that you said ''simply because I never really hear about it/ has been informed'' how are you defending the degree when you do not even know what it is about or its prospects. you admit you know nothing.

For everyone in the comments saying her major is useless it's not. If you had the respect to at least watch one of her videos she was published author in high school which not even half of the people hate commenting can do, her book has a 5/5 on goodreads I'm not here to praise her book. But you don't need to major in something like neuroscience or biology or Physics to be successful in fact to be successful it takes passion and she has that which is why she chose to pursue something that she loves because she chose to make her self happy not slaving away to major in something to make her subscribers happy. everyone has different passions which is not always going to be what you want. She can still go med school or law school If she wants too. But since she's doing what she loves she has a better chance to continue to become better at it which can probably get her more famous or get her more money so she can continue doing what she loves. Overall I never meet Sienna but she seems like an amazing, sweet person. And for all high school and college students pick your major for you the salary should not be a big factor I mean sure it's a plus but you only have one life and use it to choose and pursue what you love and what your most passionate about wheter that be dance, history, gender studies or biology. And her passion is probably one of a lot of reasons Harvard chose to accept her. I hope everyone is staying safe during this quarantine ❤

*i consider myself a feminist (please don’t attack me i’m not looking for that) however i wouldn’t go to HARVARD for a gender studies degree... i’m not one to bash decisions but i would’ve personally chosen another major and minored in gender studies.*

tbh she should've reversed her major and minor. she should major in psychology and minor in women's studies but thats just my opinion

It's much much easier to get through so a lot of people go 'just' for the Harvard lifestyle, status and socialization. Naive 'elle wood' type girls like her are usually on majors like this one, wich they don't necessarily use in the end (mostly because they never intented to anyway) but it pays off in many other ways since they are now part of the 'circle', and if you're not the most 'academically inclined' of beings, the contacts you get on these places can get you through life much easier than any other place honestly.

Michellexbeauty there’s nothing wrong with being feminist, it is in fact wrong to be a feminist who’s goal has been distorted into making women higher than men.

Good interview. I'm not understanding some of the comments on it, though. People are honestly surprised that she isn't in STEM or other at a _liberal arts_ school? She seems happy and confident, and her answers seemed genuine. Nothing wrong with that!

It has been increasingly interesting to me when people talk about getting into Harvard and Ivy League schools. The privilege that surrounds these top candidates, the ability to attend private schools, private tutoring and immense amount of mentorship. I think the playing field is not equal for all participants. Its unequal territory and I'm not hating just pointing out facts.

most people in this comment section have clearly NEVER watched her videos. she is a writer, worked her ass off, and was published multiple times. maybe her background helped, but don’t discredit her on her work. plus, google what jobs you can get with a gender studies degree, it is not useless. on top of that, it is HER life and HER career. now, stop being assholes on the internet. :)
