Don Garlits Is The Big Daddy Of Drag Racing

Drag racing legend Big Daddy Don Garlits and various incarnations of his Swamp Rat dragster. Big Daddy had many close calls in his career. The most significant was his famous accident in 1970 when his Swamp Rat broke in half. This spurred him to reinvent Swamp Rat away from the Slingshot configuration to the rear-engine design we see today. Within two years Slingshot dragsters were virtually extinct in favor of his much safer rear-engine layout.
