That;s the thing with Donnie Baseball. He is one of the best hitters in MLB history. His back kept him from establishing hall of fame numbers. During the height of his career he was like Trout is today. The thing about him was his skill at first was just as remarkable as his batting prowess. What a talent he was. That swing.

Yup....the back cost Mattingly a WS ring also...as he would of stuck around another yr or 2 most likely.

Love Donnie Baseball always!! It wasn't just the numbers in his all too short prime, it was his whole approach to the game!! The ultimate professional!! Bill James once said about Mattingly "100% ballplayer, 0% BS." I couldn't agree more. Thanks for all the great memories Donnie!!

Not in HOF. Outrageous. He should be in there before a dozen other guys. I am mostly here to hear "Holy Cow!"

This is a Hall-of-Fame reel. Look at how he's clobbering lefthanded pitching and sending balls into orbit despite a 180-pound frame. He was given shit for support after Henderson left and Winfield got old before he left too. Imagine prime Donny -- bad back and all -- with the 1995 Indians or 2004 Red Sox lineup. It's an absolute travesty that two of the top five players of the 1980s -- Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy -- are not in the Hall of Fame, but Harold Fucking Baines is.

I forgot about the old Toronto stadium. The outfield looks like a prison parking lot. and then there's the seats facing the wrong way

Man do I wish he played one more year. They still would’ve won it ‘96 with him at first.

Silly to bring it up. Yankees had the best record in baseball in the entire 1980s and Mattingly was the main reason why. And in 1994 they were the undisputed best team when the strike killed the postseason.

Because the Yankees let quality young pitchers go constantly back then… Jose Rijo, Al Leiter, Doug Drabeck, etc.. and would sign guys like Ken Phelps for more offense. It wasn’t Mattingly’s fault. His team’s would have been in the playoffs almost every year with the wild card system.
