"In 2009, George Floyd was arrested for a 1st-degree felony charge...of assault and armed robbery he took part in 2007 and spent five years in prison for breaking into a lady’s house with the intent to rob her. George agreed that he wore a blue uniform to look like a government employee to gain the lady’s trust, and eventually pave his way into the house. The lady soon realized that the person was impersonating to be a government worker, she tried to shut the door but Floyd brute-forced his way into the house. Consequently, a Ford truck pulled up to the house’s main entrance, five people exited the truck and went straight inside the lady’s house. According to Daily Mail (UK), the court report mentions that the victim identified George as the criminal, tallest of all the robbers, who pressed a pistol to her stomach and forced his way into the house. George Floyd’s height was 6 foot 6 inches." Source: Jangra, S. (2020) George Floyd criminal past record/arrest history/career timeline: Baggie, gun pregnant and all details, The Courier Daily. McLean has always written about the plight of coloured folks. An example that comes to mind is Orphans of Wealth (1970). The man is 78 now, it’s natural that the musical genius of his prime has run dry. Nevertheless, this theme is not foreign to him nor his songwriting. His discography is littered with it.

He should’ve been put into some sort of therapy for his addiction, or at most a prison. He deserved a second chance at life. No drug addict deserves death, but therapy to help, or being put in jail to learn from past mistakes. But it’s a huge stretch that he “coincidentally” died of his meth, opioid, and fentanyl abuse at the same time he was suffocated, that’s a little *too* coincidental. So in my opinion, both Derek and Floyd were wrong in the case that Floyd had a fentanyl and Meth addiction and Derek suffocated him. I by no means support BLM after they bought mansions with the funds instead of funding black education, neighborhoods, and other things. And I’m saying that drug addicts deserve a second chance at life because addiction is where I draw the line. Murderers and insane people don’t deserve a second chance. In the case of Derek, I think he just made a stupid decision instead of putting Floyd in handcuffs.

I'm a fan of Don McLean. I admire how he thinks for himself. I appreciate the spirit of antiheroes in folk music. However, in this song, Don McLean propounds the false narrative that was spewed out by Machiavellian people who, for political gain, used the consequences of George Floyd's sad, unfortunate life of addiction. I watched the entire police video, and, after doing so, I feel that the officers handled this situation reasonably. It was NOT a simple encounter. It was one of the more difficult encounters that police officers have to deal with. I have pity on where George Floyd's life choices took him, and it is terrible that he died, but his past crimes made both his subsequent canonization and the vilification of the police an injustice.

What a way to use a medium such as music to focus on something so irrelevant to the context. Has anybody wondered if George was targeted to be the eventual reason for the riot ahead of time? Has anyone wondered if George was pushing counterfeit money which the local government was pushing themselves and therefore wanted him off the street? Who gave George the drugs that day? Who was he with last? What did his mother have anything to do with this context in his mind to be asking for her? But why would you write a song about a man who pointed a gun at a pregnant woman's stomach? There is a point where you have to draw a red line in how you frame something for people to listen to in terms of sympathy or empathy for their death. I draw the line at shit stain.
