What sort of speeds are you doing in the video? What sort of speed should you be gearing for in this race?

You can expect to do speeds up to 140. You don't want to gear a bike to high as the sand is extremely deep and robs power. On a KTM 500 I ended up running 13/48 which worked well, the year before with 14/48 I couldn't use 6th gear properly.

@@loveoffroadaus thanks for the info. I'm running KTM 300 so bit of a struggle to get high speed out of. Just about to trial 14/48 as 14/50 would only do about 110-120 in the sand. Hopefully it'll still pull 6th with a 48 rear as top end power isn't an issue yet.

@@NCER999 I'd be pretty surprised if 6th will be usable with 14/48. The sand is river sand with no base so it is very heavy compared to normal sand. I'd rather have 6th usable and run out of legs at 120 than an unusable 6th and have to rev the guts out of 5th to do 120.

@@loveoffroadaus just been testing on beach sand. Going up a couple of days prior to pre-run an will take some sprockets. All a balance between power an speed! Thanks for the info 👍

@@loveoffroadaus A flood or rain can change the dynamics of the river, I'd imagine it would be wise to bring some options with you.
