Some years ago, I decided to try the guitar having previously played violin and cello, but had two major problems: (1) chords seemed to have a weird variety of hand shapes without any rhyme or reason, and (2) it was hard to fret a string without also hitting the string above. So one Friday, somewhat like you did when you were eight (though I was much older), I invented a tuning to fix both problems; by Sunday evening I was able to play movable chords, in multiple inversions, in tempo. At the time, the tuning was x-x-d-f-g#-b (I didn't know what to do with the bottom two string yet) but I've since extended it to G-D-d-f-g#-b. I need to post more videos, but I posted one video which clearly shows the left-hand chords for "Hotel California" [search "Flatfinger California"]. It doesn't look like the left hand is doing much, because it isn't. I'd be interested in your thoughts about that tuning. Also, I'd like to post more videos which show multiple angles like yours, but don't know how to manage the process of shoot/edit/upload. How do you make your videos look so nice?

I like that while you describe something I barely can follow, I'm aware you're speaking as someone who remembers what it was like when you were starting out. Those kinds of people are the most effective teachers, IMHO, in any discipline. One of my friends announced at the club last Saturday he was going to play the next song in drop D tuning. It was a song to his deceased mother. All I know is it gives a haunting tone to the right music. And nice reference to Crowded House; I love that song too.

Ah, the folk scare - also known as 'the hammer famine', beause everyone was singing about what they would do IF they had a hammer! Very enjoyable and you are a great teacher. Love your playing. Don't think there's a real difference between altered and open tunings. Every tuning (including standard) is an open tuning, in that it is tuned to a chord - it's just that some of the chords are more complex than traditional triad open tunings - maybe you say this in your lesson. Cheers

" ... old enough to remember the folk scare." You got me right there. Never heard that description of the era before. Is that one yours? Sweet! Plus a really good explanation of altered tunings vs open tunings. I think I'm a fan ...
@larrygeetar9309
@larrygeetar9309 9 жыл бұрын
larry geetar BTW, Don - I stumbled on a tuning called the "Memphis Minnie" tuning, also called a reverse drop D or a fake G tuning. It's achieved by dropping the pitch of your 1st string down one whole step from E to D while in standard tuning. That gives you the top 4 four strings of an open G tuning. I play slide and love open G, but often have to play regular guitar rhythm parts or licks, too, not slide only. Yes, I play standard tuning slide, but this little trick gives you a nice box of G tuning so you can play those awesome licks but still have regular guitar underneath it to go back to. Ever heard of this altered tuning or used it yourself? If not, check it out. Pretty cool, and thanks.

It's possibly just because I'm still getting the hang of tuning by ear (and Don being a professional), but my brain is really struggling to process the casual ease with which he tunes a string perfectly in less than 5 seconds
@robrobert9541
@robrobert9541 10 жыл бұрын
I've tried drop D tuning (and some other alternate tunings), but it's kind of limiting in the chords you can play while tuned that way. You pretty much have to change your tuning each time you play a new song. I also have trouble with trying to get used to compensating for the changes to chords that are permanently imprinted in my subconscious and I find myself instinctively playing the chords the way I should while in standard tuning. I guess it's like anything else - once you get more used to it there can be advantages, but I find myself dreading changing the tuning for some reason. Thanks for another great lesson, though. I'll try to work with it more and get used to it. Much respect for your playing and your easy to follow lessons. Thanks.

It's all a question of "does it serve my purpose as a creator"?...I've been using open tunings for 40 years and it's become second nature to me!!...Pierre Bensusan decided to play only in DADGAD and knows it upside down now and can play anything on it!!...I still use a lot of different tunings for the harmonic expression made available with them!!...you have to think and play "out of the box"!!...best of luck with it!!...
