Don't Add Supers Too Early - It Can Set Your Bees Back!
Are you wondering when should I add supers to a beehive or what is the best time to add supers?
Throughout the season, we use the 80% rule when adding new boxes. When 80% of the frames in the box below are covered by bees, you can safely add the next super.
In this video, I discuss why that approach isnt suitable in the spring and talk about when is the best time to add a super to a beehive.

Totally agree Lawrence, mine were bursting so I stuck the supers on end of Feb, it cost me several colonies due to ice cold snap the following week. 😭 Lesson learnt

@@BlackMountainHoney Still think you have more bees in one hive than I have in six 😳 but they are bringing in pollen so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. My bees are just local mongrels and usually come through winter, but I did start to worry when I saw how full your hives are 😳😳

Guess this goes against the ideas in the Checker boarding book you received, so will definitely be good to see how the checker boarded hive gets on. Guess since they are adding frames of stores and not just foundation or drawn comb it helps the colony deal with any cold snaps.

I'd say the checkerboarding book goes against ALL good beekeeping advice, but you never know until you try it.

Fab as ever! What would you do with Supers that are still on the hive, specifically those that have been treated with Apivar and OA vape. Can I store these with honey in until winter and give it back to them?

Eek can of worms there. I'd melt them down and rewax and use them as honey supers

@@BlackMountainHoney Indeed! Don't want them getting into my honey crop of course. So far the bees have barely dented the stores in the treated supers. Seems a shame to waste it all. I have clearly been too generous with fondant. Though they have only have 15kg of fondant between two hives, and they still have some of that on at the moment.

@@MrAaroncornish Ah. Supers. Plus Syrup. Plus fondant! They will be well fed! I would condense to a simple brood box going forward. Those supers can't have honey in them until they are melted and rewaxed
