Don't ask Bernard Hopkins about lawsuit against Al Haymon

I asked Bernard Hopkins about a press release the company he works for sent out the day before we saw each other at the Canelo vs. Kirkland press conference. The press release detailed the lawsuit Golden Boy Promotions filed against boxing manager Al Haymon and included a quote from Hopkins in it. This is what happened.

Saddens me what Hopkins has become as a promoter. He was my favorite fighter, he had to fight to get what he deserved because crooked promoters and networks looked to take advantage of him during his career. As a result he didnt get what he deserved until late in his career and even then he didnt get his just due. Now that he has retired, put away the gloves and thrown on and suit, he is looking to do the same thing he fought so hard against as a pugilst. Trying to sue another black man doing what's in the best interest of the fighter is deplorable. I expect it from the likes of Bob Arum and DLH but for Hopkins to be complicit, it disappoints me.

You are probably wrong on this one. Hopkins clearly knew what he was doing. First, he gave the interviewer the courtesy of listening to the quote to determine the context in which it was given. Then, after determining that he did not want to say anything about pending litigation beyond what he had already said (a smart move), Hopkins took a moment to praise himself and briefly give the interviewer a hard time. A "smarter" interviewer might have pressed more, but that interviewer would not have had any more success than the interviewer in this video had. Also, Hopkins recognized and acknowledged that the interviewer was just doing his job. That move from Hopkins probably allowed the interviewer to walk away from the encounter feeling more comfortable about approaching Hopkins in the future with questions that Hopkins is willing to answer. All in all, Hopkins handled the situation as well as you would hope that a highly self-confident athlete who is a party to litigation would handle it.
