Oil prices are nearly 40% lower than in June 2022, but petrol & diesel prices have barely been reduced. Instead, a longer analysis shows there’s a strong link between price cuts and election dates. The biggest organized loot in India for the past 5+ years is the hefty fuel prices, thanks to the gigantic taxes levied on them. It's surprising how Indians are sleeping on this issue. The prices are hardly inline with the shifting oil rates, just have a look at financials of Oil Cos, and the taxes collected by Govt for fuel - more than 40% of the retail price. Moreover the Oil Cos pay hefty dividend to their owner, the Central Govt. And the citizens, we are fine with this LOOT. Fuel prices are set by the OMCs - True. But who are setting the taxes - Exicse Duty and VAT? TThe Govt cant run away from this profiting at the cost of Citizens.

August 2014, crude oil was priced $102 per barrel and petrol price was ₹73, while in August 2024, crude oil is at $78 per barrel, and yet petrol price is ₹108/ litre Vote for BJP and hindutva 😂🤪🤣

I wish they did the same for gold. Like if the govt hoarded as much gold as possible, and control gold prices by trading. Then perhaps, they could earn money from this, and fund the govt expenses. Indian people need to be disincentivized from buying gold. Or atleast, the profit of the expense be caught by the govt, than foreign sellers.

Would request Sharad Raghavan & The Print to analyse domestic & commercial LPG cylinder prices. Considering DBT to PMUY consumers, there is no need to subsidize domestic cylinder prices and it must follow the unit cost of commercial cylinder prices. Similarly, compare diesel, petrol & aviation fuel prices. You will discover a pattern as explained in this video.

Changing fuel prices will not make sense as there is no certainty. But prices should be revised every 1st of month. Govt should increase or decrease the tax so that price remains same so that there is certainty with which logistic companies and transport vehicle business remain without change. As for as OMCs are concerned, some one should complain to competition commission of India that these companies are misusing the dominant position and cheating general public.

@@RUSSELRAJ-o9t Depends on how the taxes are used. Spending on infrastructure has a GDP multiplier of 3 over multiple years. Spending that on freebies has a multiplier of 1 i.e. it gives short-term relief and doesn't add to GDP. Ask for reduction of various freebies and various subsidies that are given to farmers, who don't pay any tax. That is where the real problem is.

Sharad , would you advocate oil price increase when international crude prices are rising ? Will political parties advocate such increase? All ruling parties have been taking advantage of price cut prior to elections .And ruling parties have still been losing . I would rely on wisdom of Government in such rate cuts / rate increase. You are being theoretical. And while doing the journalist job , unnecessarily impractical . High fuel prices could very well be enabling Government to fund other subsidies/ social spending .

I pay a lot of tax to fund the welfare in this country. If a common man has to pay 4-5 rupees per litre to fund the welfare in this country, it shouldn't be a problem. Old oil bonds, free ration, free homes, zero agri tax, free electricity - somebody has to fund it and only 3% of population pays the taxes. I don't even support lowering prices in elections but free ka khane ki aadat hogyi hai logo ko.
