When you talked about upper belts letting you work... I noticed now that I’ve been training 6 months or so that our coaches don’t let anyone “work” if they aren’t relaxed. If you’re being a spaz they just turn it up a bit in a way that is controlling and keeps everyone more safe. I didn’t comprehend that in the beginning but now we have a lot of folks new in the gym because of the new year and I get it. If it’s your first couple classes my goal is to keep both of us safe even if I can’t get anything done because I’m not very experienced myself. Multiply that by years and years of experience like my coaches and it all Makes sense when you take a step back.

For sure and glade you are noticing that. If we break all our toys, we will not have any to play with.

I am a couple stripe brown belt, and weigh about 185 lbs. When big strong new guys come to the gym, I actually like training against them, because I get to test myself against the type of people who would actually attack me in the street. It took a while before I had the confidence to ask 250 lbs dudes (and up) to roll on their first day. It is sketchy. But I do notice most of them only come in once because they don't like losing. The problem is, when they keep coming! Then you know they are gonna be a real problem lol
@ChasenHill3 жыл бұрын
For sure testing, yourself is good, and do it myself! I was a blue belt when this story happened. I'm able to handle this situation much better now. What messed me up, was the gentleman expressed he had trained extensively before and then does a technique that is usually frowned upon. So it just caught me off guard. Now I'm on full alert haha!

Great video providing much needed advice to new guys entering the sport. When I first started, I had no clue and was in full on fight or flight mode when rolling with other white belts. I remember the owner and head trainer of the school picking me up and slamming me at one point during a situation roll. I didn't realize until months later that he was probably trying to "tell" me something or "teach" me a lesson because I was being too rough with other students. The problem is that nobody explained the rules or expected behavior to me or any of the other new guys, so we were just trying to survive. Looking back, I think that a couple of months of learning principles, techniques and etiquette would have helped created a much more productive learning environment as reduced injuries and frustration. Sounds like your school has figured this out.

Thank you for sharing that experience. Your story is ubiquitous for a lot of white belts. Making students wait just a bit, letting them learn and watch helps everyone in the long run.

2 months in training, a gym mate with about 2 years experience came to me and asked me to warmup before class, as we are warming up he went all force and ankle lock me after breaking out of my closed guard and snapped the ankle. 2 years later to this moment my ankle still not 100% back...

I'm sorry to hear that. Props to you for not giving up and returning to training. Students normally quit because of a negative experience like you had. Hopefully, your mate has chilled out a bit more!

I have been training for about 3 months 2 weeks ago another Older white belt who is super aggressive drove my lower leg in an awkward direction while trying to pass my open guard. Didn’t feel much at the time but pretty painful afterward . Just found out I have a partially torn MCL, probably no surgery but gonna be out a while. Bummed out because I was loving it
@ChasenHill3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. It's extremely common for two newer whites can injury each other. Make sure to give the injury enough time to heal. I've had students return too soon and make it worse. Hope you can heal up fast!

2 times ribs broken, second was really bad. Left hip hurts if I train too often, same goes for right knee - that one gets numb and starts to lock on me if I sit down too long. Cauliflower left ear since I mainly pass their right. Solid sartorius injury when a white belt head dived while I had him in rubber guard. Needless to say he ended up at the bottom of the mount - but my calf was injured solid. Eye pokes, matt burns i wont count.

Same buy by a purple and brown belt, im a white belt and for some reason the purple belt was cranking at 100% like we were competing. Baseball bat choke at 100% doesnt feel good at all! Brown belt was rag dolling me like i was offending him or something...still confused why anyone would go that hard. Felt like i was seeing it wrong, but as a white belt going against them why would anyone go so agressive with someone at any moment in training. Ego? Practicing for comps? Idk but it was not fun! I tapped loudly like 10-15 times...felt like they were trying to put me in my place, idk man but it wasn't cool at all. Love the vids!

Im a blue belt, and I had a white belt catch me in an americana and ripped it hard before I could submit. I heard my elbow pop and it took two months to recover, and I still have a shoulder impingement to this day that I never had before. Now I take no chances with white belts, I smash the hell out of every single one and let them suffer under pressure.

Hey 41 year old 1 stripe white belt here, had been an instructor in other arts previously, so getting to this late. Over 3 months I’ve had broken teeth, damaged cartilage in my chin, and currently laid up with a badly sprained ankle. I love the art but there’s maybe too much ego with the young guys I spar with. Probably just gonna be very candid with them going forward, to keep things competitive yes, bud also technical, so we all can learn rather than ego driven. As my leg was just dived on like a goal keeper.
@ChasenHill3 жыл бұрын
If my advice means anything, I would suggest discussing the problem with the head instructor first. In my experience, this usually fixes the problem faster. However, unfortunately, if the top people don't fix it once notified, it might be time to look into another academy.

A purple belt guy that is very big, probably 95 kilos (I am 73) could not pass my guard easy. I was below and I closed my guard on him, I put my hip-high and closed my legs and then the guy put all his way on my neck. I got really nervous because I felt that if he moved at any side I would break my neck. I quickly tap to him letting me go. He got his win but my neck appreciated.

@@ChasenHill he meant 73kg not 73yo. To OP, Closing your legs and crossing them does make it hard to pass, but neither of you are learning much when you are locked up. You will need to open the guard to do most techniques.

ah, the spirited white belts in the youtube culture. There was one at my previous academy, he was the "I don't tap type" and more "I won't tap to a woman" type, he neck cranked me while attempting a triangle, problem is, I didn't realize at the moment, because I felt no pain and I could breath, so I rode the clock, stupid me. I was a full day unable to look down, luckily I didn't have to work the following day, but thanks to that I researched and discovered the "awesomest way to escape triangles" (his words) by Keenan Cornelius, that I've been using ever since with fair success. Initially I started using it as a means to protect my neck from triangulers going for it, but it works quite well to escape, I should say. In the academy I'm attending now, white belts go to an extensive period of training before they move on, my previous academy was new and small, so everyone rolled with everyone, which is fine, but could be risky

It's very interesting to learn from your lesson, and to know what are your strategies and tactics to deal with this specific problem of newcomers sparring hapsardly as a teacher that you are now. I believe everything starts with the language you set your environment up for. Prevention, gentleness, correct technique, are the way to go, and as a teacher your responsibility is right at that corner, what do you think ?

Thanks coach for sharing. I am 44, female, blue belt. I have had 2 major injuries - once I was kneed on the nose; once I pulled off the tip of a rib. Both were training with white belts. I am only 5'3 120 lbs. With the goal of training more, I often am extremely cautious. Hope I can keep up and continue. I met many new students recently. Many hold their breath. I often tell them ... breathe breathe breathe.

There is a guy in the gym (blue belt) that likes to do gross moves, pushing hard the arm in the locks and passing the guard robbing the kimono over your face so hard that you feel he is doing a peeling on your face. With that types of guys, my instinct speaks louder and I transform into the best, really strong and fealess. They get the best out of me.

I would've broke his fucking arm. I'm ok with certain neck cranks as long as both partners agree to it and they are applied slowly and lightly, but to crank one fast is horrible gym etiquette. Also a straight can opener is dangerous but luckily he didn't rotate your head (bring your ear to your sternum) before he cranked it forward, those dual plane neck cranks are used a lot in catch and are far more dangerous and could've paralyzed you
@ChasenHill3 жыл бұрын
Yes luckily I wasn’t too damaged! Just sore for a solid couple of weeks!

@@ChasenHill one plane/direction (can opener, 100%, Japanese necktie) neck cranks strain the muscles more, it's harder for them to actually break the neck. If you look up stuff by catch guys like Erik Paulson and Josh Barnett, they teach two plane cranks (head is rotated sideways before being cranked forward) which if you cranked one of those on someone they'd probably end up paralyzed. Luckily that guy either didn't know any or wasn't enough of an asshole to do them. There are some on KZbin if you're interested. I taught myself quite a few actually.
