I worked as a cna in the pacu. Did 2 years in post and 2 yrs in preop. I just passed the next gen nclex Rn and will be taking the Pacu residency job offer in Jan 2024. I am excited. Working as a tech in pacu helped so much giving me confidence into working now as an Rn in the pacu.

My when i was a baby nurse, I was so slow in the documentation. I got stressed out with so many things in the first few minute of receiving patient. when receiving patient, I had to listen to Anesthetist report and order, I also had to inspected and assessed patient in the same time, clarified with anesthetist before they rushed back to operation room. my eyes, my ears, my brain, and my hands work in the same time. very intense. As a baby nurse, they gave me a simple case, but I still feel stressed and cold sweat. haha I understand very well the feeling of pulling the whole pacu down, as I was with just 1 patient and stucked at my bay for too long. But I make it, I improve myself a lot. I grow and love pacu. I like pacu.

As a newly registered Recovery Nurse in the UK, I truly enjoy having conversations with my patients and making tea for them. I don't mind when they ask repetitive questions and yes, it is largely because of the anaesthesia. I can't help but feel sorry, too when a patient has excruciating pain and the opiates don't seem to work. Some people think PACU/Recovery nursing is easy but they don't realize it requires a different skill set.

So glad I found this! I’m interviewing for pacu Monday but this gave me some things to really consider. I’d be moving from the icu so yes I’m detail oriented but the monotony you mention gives me pause. I’ve heard this as a con from a few other nurses and knowing myself it may just not be a good fit. Though the fast paced nature is appealing.

While I was there I was in the PICU for about two weeks and then I ended up getting transferred down to the adult ICU I was not happy about that. but the nice part about it was that that Sunday night the night charge nurse came to me and said I have good news for you your going back up to PICU I spent my birthday in the PICU while I was in the PICU we all thought that the infection was gone so my nurse pulled the drain tube out and about two days later I started feeling the same symptoms again so I ended up being brought back to X-Ray department and having another drain tube put in. When I was being brought down to the OR my nurse saw me getting brought down and she waved to me that same day 2 of the night shift nurses came in and saw me before they left to go home after being up all night they were nice enough to come see me before they went home. Then when I was being brought down to the OR my day shift nurse saw me getting brought down and she waved to me and as soon as I got back up to PICU my day shift nurse came right in and stayed with me till the night shift nurses got there then my night shift nurse stayed with me till the morning shift nurses got there. The nurses brought me in cake and balloons and a card. I really miss the PICU and the nurses I had and my view of the river and the helicopter and the helicopter pad and I really miss the room I had. As of this last hospital stay I've decided to go back to school to become an RN but first starting out as a phlebotomist and then becoming a medical lab tech then CNA then RN I want to work in both the PICU and the adult ICU now I have also been looking at other health care departments because I do have an interest in those as well.

Hi, I'm a graduate RN from Australia and currently working on the orthopaedic and neurosurgical ward, my life is miserable at thr moment because it is such a fast paced and chaotic ward we get a 5 patient load but during the shift we discharge 2 or 3 patiens sometimes we have to do their discharge paperwork as well as ordering their medications and then get post operative patients while doing all that, I'm really wanting to try PACU because you have that one on one patient care, I never got the chance to have a PACU placement as a student. I am the type of person who likes routine, calm environment, I don't like chaos. Do you think PACU would be suitable for me?

Post surgery nurse yelled at me for coughing after extubate. Basically, she felt I didn't deserve the privileges of the surgery (14 yr nasal block). Threw oxygen mask at me; mask wasn't even connected to anything. She abandoned me. Yep. Actually LEFT me on my own. I coached myself through coming out of the general. She never contacted my husband to join me in post-surgery. I flagged another nurse for help. She didn't want to get involved. I cannot figure out why or how this happened. Contacted my insurance and documented entire post-surgery event. I'm 60. I'll never ever allow surgery to happen again. Ever.

What an unfortunate experience you had! Coughing is actually good and we teach patients to cough and deep breather post extubation to prevent pneumonia. That person you’ve encountered should not have been in the profession, it’s a shame it affected your experience. I’ve honestly never seen this as a nurse or being a post op patient myself twice now.
