Ahhhh...I'm on cloud nine! Dreamed of backyard chickens for as long as I can remember. Blame the Corona or "empty nesting" since my youngest is a 2020 high school grad, but I finally have my first little flock, they are soooooo adorable! Surprisingly I was most attracted to having silkies because of their wacky style and the friendliness but the others are showing me more love than I ever imagined and only after a few days!!! It's beautiful. I was wanting 3 or 4 but my hatchery only had unsexed silkies so they gave me 3 for the price of 1, if I get cockerels I can return them for credit. I'm in the city and we are restricted from having roosters...sorry boys! Chicken math 3+3=6...oops!! Anyway, I'm so glad I found you and this community. My question is about fermenting feed, scratch and peck starter can be fed dry or does it have to be fermented? I'm a bunny and pup mom but I'm new to everything chicken.

I use a large tub with wheels. With 6 0r 8 baby chicks I can keep them in it about 4 weeks. With two of these rolling tubs I can transfer the chicks to the other one or a 2nd enclosure, I can take it out yo the yard and hose it out. In addition I have another on I keep the bedding in it. Both purchased at WalMart. I also cover the bleeding with puppy pads for a easy clean up. With living in Fl. I can move them out to the coop to finish growing them up. I confined them in the house for a couple of weeks and then let them out to the yard. All of the nest boxes were covered up with card board so they do not sleep in them. I will keep them closed until they are about laying age. I really enjoy your channel.

Dang it woman! I was thoroughly ok with NOT having chick pangs this year...and then I watch this video. I had a bad case of “chicken math” 3 years ago..and don’t need any more! Now I’m super tempted again. Arrrgh! Went to pick up feed at Tractor Supply tonight, and of course they’ve got little darlings in there- two were scream peeping (most likely in need of some tender loving immediate care- a.k.a they are probably sick and will most likely die soon in such conditions without knowledgeable care) and I had to tear myself away. I’m wishing I would’ve brought them home just so they can get adequate meds to survive. I really hate to see them suffering! And it’s typically easy to get them to survive when one knows how. It really pulls on the heartstrings. Anyone else get this way?

It is March and my coop is nearly completed, but I need to build a run and then another fenced yard semi enclosure for semi free range so I need the time anyway to get projects done, I'm in a very hot climate in sw Texas so 95_ degrees temps everyday in Aug and 90s into Sept. We got our first chicks this year. We have them in a large galvanized tub in our garage. Problem is it’s starting to get really hot. Their coop has been delayed for delivery so I don’t have anywhere else to put them other that chillin in our yard with a few under a small tractor. We have lots of cats so I can’t leave them alone. Should I worry about them over heating? I do turn off the heat lamp during the day now that they are a month old (unless it’s a cool day) It’s been getting close to the 90 degree mark here. Should I provide them a cool source? Or will they be fine at this age if it gets around 90?
@WelcometoChickenlandia3 жыл бұрын
You will want to make sure they have cool water daily. You might have to change it often. They might not need heat at night at this point since you are in a hot climate. Are you chickens heat tolerant breeds?
@pennydaytreasures81733 жыл бұрын
@@WelcometoChickenlandia yes we did get breeds that are tolerant to our climate. Thank you for responding. I’ve been changing the water about 3 times a day. One has electrolytes and the other is just plain water. We do turn a fan on when it gets really hot. They seem to be doing fine. Very active and chirping until it gets hot. Then they spread out and sleep. Which so far it’s only been hot from about 5pm to 7pm because that is when the sun faces down on the garage.
