All opinions are my own and may not be the same experience someone else may have had. If you like this product, continue using it.

The NICE part about the model magic is that it's SO lightweight. I've used it for cosplay props and it's awesome because of how light it is (and it doesn't break easily, but when it does, white glue holds it back together wonderfully). My main negative about Model Magic? Well, I used it to make a mask once. The heat from my body and the hot outdoor temperatures caused it to melt. to. my. face. Buuut, back on the positive side, it holds acrylic paint REALLY well, and it doesn't chip!

I'm currently using it as part of my Halloween costume. I'm making it a wearable velociraptor head, and I used Model Magic for the teeth, gums, and will be using it around the eyes. Since everything is going on my head, the extreme lightweight is a godsend, and so far I really haven't had too many negatives with it, other than some cracking in the gums. It takes paint well, and a little seems to go a long way in terms of volume. Even the cost was reasonable! $4 for 4oz, and I think I've used 5-6oz altogether

The reasons why polymer is better than crayola is because one you definitely don’t want it too crack because if you are trying too make earrings or bracelets the cracking and gravity problem.

@@Aryyplaz Update on velociraptor head: served well for one year, but now the cracking is such that I must retire it. In all other terms though, the Model Magic was brilliant. Again, the super lightweight nature of it saved me literal pain while wearing it

Cosplayer here! Model magic has a lot of great uses in cosplay, usually when used in tandem with other materials. For making certain accessories- especially if you’re wearing them on top of your head- it’s a lot more lightweight than polymer or airdry clay- Homestuck cosplayers frequently used it to make horns and such!
@cutedarkarts
@cutedarkarts 6 жыл бұрын
Vegraptor Cosplay all my horns are pretty lightweight, and I NEVER used model magic. Some of them are polymer and others are normal airdry. It's all about how you make them. Foil cores are essential for any large clay projects, so it makes sense to do the same for clay props. And the airdry and polymer are less likely to crack, and will last longer anyways, so just invest in the higher quality products.

MapleshadeDarkRay_YT good luck on that! If you need any more prop/costume tips, I'd suggest channels like Kamui's workshop, Zonbli, and punished props. That's usually where I go for a lot of cosplay help, so it may help you too!

Another cosplayer here! Yeah model magic was the trending way to make troll horns back in the day; even I still have some. But tbh theres Clay's that do the job WAY better for a similar price. Most paper/foam clays are equally light, sandable, and paintable, without the horrible cracking issues, and are more durable. Just 'cause it's a popular cosplay trend, doesn't mean it's the best option... (I'm lookin at YOU, people who use foundation/concealer as lipstick for crossplay!!)

I think the main issue is comparing it to sculpey and its price point. Model magic is supposed to be used for light weight projects. Like if a kid wanted to make a snake tiara or something. Also a single package of model magic is about 3 dollars, so the pack of model magic compared to the single pack of sculpey wasn't a fair comparison either. A pack of sculpey with multiple colors is $22. Also in terms of weight, model magic is a light weight clay, where as sculpey is a heavy dense clay. You're not getting less product, it's just a lighter product. You wouldn't compare bubble gum and cotton candy for weight. Like you said it's not a fair comparison because they are such different products. I will say model magic is really flimsy though. If someone wanted to make it more durable they would need to coat their project in resin, but that does increase weight and price point.

Hey, Jackie! I know you don't approve of the Model Magic, but I have the white Model Magic and I've used it to fix my Grandma's Triceratops keychain figure. Actually, my Mom wanted me to fix her elephant figure first, which was bigger than the keychain figure. Now at first I WAS skeptical as to whether this would work or not, since it's not regular clay...BUT it DID work after I was done recreating the trunk on the elephant figure! As for the triceratops, since the tail was the only one that needed to be recreated and it's small, it was a pretty good fix success! I only used some Elmer's Glue around the base of the tail, to give it extra strength and to give it extra hold to the figure. And I only used watercolor paints and water color pencils to give the tail details for color. In my personal opinion, I think the Model Magic DOES have some advantages. And for Doll Crafters, I can see this stuff be used as a kind of alternative to make doll armors and certain accessories in place of craft foam.

It's good for children, especially small children. I am a visual art teacher; I like the fact magic model is not messy. No water or heating is necessary. That helps for smooth classroom transition and easy storage.The students have an easy time manipulating the clay too. My first and second graders made cool Yayoi Kusama inspired pumpkins for summer camp. The pumpkins came out very well. Other teachers thought I purchased the pumpkins premade and placed dots on them. No, my students made them by hand.

I use this type of clay and I learned that a small soak (in less than 4 centimeters of water) will make it dry much more solid, though it will feel a bit weird and you can't handle it until it's completely dry and I only recommend doing this after the creation has almost completely dried.

Goodness... I remember this! So many memories... My sister and I would make little pokemon figures out of this, and I remember how good the clay smelled, and how it would stain your fingers if you used it too long... My sister made Burmy, and she loved that thing, but when the clay dried, almost always, a part would fall off and I'd have to attach a new one. I also made quite a few Christmas ornaments for friends with this, and they were really happy with them! This stuff was really bad quality, but it brings back so much nostalgia...

i would guess the thickness and size would be a big factor in the drying times. smaller thinner pieces = less time needed. the thicker the piece the more time needed. and even then, thicker pieces might not Actually Be dried completely through. just my thoughts anyway. that's usually the logic for most things... regardless of the medium. at least that's been my experience. from baking actual edibles to painting, etc.

Also, a couple of things you may not have considered here: The clay you're comparing it to weighs significantly more per mass, which means a .5 to a 1 Oz pack isn't as much less as you'd think. Secondly, this box isn't the most cost effective way to buy it. The best I can find is 4 Oz of a single color, for 3.50 usd and it gives you more than enough to outpace a thing of oven bake that is typically around the same price. But you can't use one like the other so your project may be better suited for one over the other or not suited for one option like, at all, so definitely ymmv.

If it stops sticking, use some water to wet the clay. This also helps with smoothing. Keep a cup of water nearby, it isn’t that much of a hassle. It is really annoying when clay droops... I would recommend buying just white clay and mixing in paint for pastels. Great video!

I love your videos but I never thought of it as an alternative to serious art/craft clays. Realistically, it’s more an alternative to play doh. So the 72 hours is a bonus in a way, because you have some time to salvage a chunk that your toddler accidentally dropped under the dining room table and you find it an hour later. My biggest complaint with it is that for that money, they should give it to you in reusable tubs (like play doh), instead of the disposable packets it comes in.

Btw, I recently discovered that you can “reconstitute” this stuff after it dries out... literally just add water! If you spritz it with water and knead it, it will absorb the water. You can keep spritzing and kneading until it comes back to “normal” or softer.

Recovering art teacher here! Model magic sure is.....something. =-_-= the only advice I have with this stuff is water is both your friend, and your enemy. You can soften the clay a bit with some water and have it help stick and transition a bit.....but by the same token, even WEEKS later, if you dunk this stuff in water you can smush it back into usable clay. Great for letting kids just play with something and smush stuff around, but there is absolutely no way this should be used for anything other than pure exploration.

I think your expectations were too high. This is something geared towards little kids, not experienced crafters. It has its benefits, depending on what you plan to do with it. It works great for me with molds. I don't usually do free form with clay. I'm assuming that it stuck together better at first, because it was more moist. It probably dried somewhat while you were working with it.

Model Magic is in no way a comparable product to polymer clay. Like anything, how useful something is depends on what you want to do with it. You would not be making the same things with Polymer clay as you would with model magic. It’s texture is like a light foamy plasticine. It’s an incredibly lightweight material that it meant to retain its slightly ‘squishy’ and soft texture, even after it has dried after a few hours (72 hours is the time until it fully cures). It’s “childish charm” is because this is a product designed for small children, it’s important to not ignore the context in which it was designed to be used. I recently bought a package to make an impression of my dogs paw for a shadow box. It’s no mess, non-toxic formula is perfect for what I made and would be great for making imprints of a baby’s hand or foot. It’s feather weight would allow you to glue it to the pages in a scrapbook or affixing it to whatever surface you have with the appropriate adhesive. Long story short, your review is like complaining that a lawnmower didn’t clear the snow from your driveway.
