This video was made to help people understand the difference between chlorine and monochloramine. Chlorine is easily removed from water while chloramine is not.
Some companies are marketing their KDF filters to people that have no idea that there is another type of chlorine with ammonia added to it, called monochloramine. Probably all the water plants in the near future will convert to chloramines to meet government standards. The filter companies are not telling people about this. People are using their products to protect their families drinking a shower water for years from chlorine while in some cases they have been ingesting chloramine. When I asked the company why they wouldn't take the filters back in exchange for a couple of filters for my gravity style machine they said I should have known that they wouldn't work. I figure there are allot of these people that don't know so I told them I'd help spread the word. There are plenty of good filters out there that will work and you don't need to buy these filter until the manufacture gets them improved to handle chloramines. Just check it out before you buy. If you have one, get the water checked or call the manufacture and ask them will their product remove this dangerous chemical and if not why didn't they advise you about it. I went to our water companies web site and checked the water specs and found it there. I hope this helps you decide which filter will work best for your needs. If you use an RO unit remember to add mineral drops to your water as RO strips them out of the water and your body needs minerals. Please leave a comment. Thanks

Here's my take on this as a 22-year water chemist and water quality lab director, now retired. Depending on the testing method you used to determine that the KDF was not removing the chlorine, I would suggest that what you were getting was a "false positive." And the culprit causing the false positive would be the ammonia that is combined with chlorine to form chloramine. In short, a laboratory titration would most likely confirm that the chlorine was, indeed, removed or reduced to undetectable levels. [Salespeople speak of "removing" this or that contaminant; water chemists refer to "reducing" said contaminants.] BUT the ammonia sneaks past. And it only takes a trace amount of ammonia to register a healthy positive on most non-laboratory chlorine testing protocols. Also, I would never use carbon, either granular (GAC) or carbon block, for a shower filter -- unless you are into cold showers. Running hot water through a carbon filter is a good way to purge the carbon of whatever contaminants it has adsorbed/absorbed from a prior flow-through. IOW, that's not the right filter media for hot showers. KDF is a good water filter media, but you're right, you need to know what your tap water provider is using as the disinfectant; chlorine or chloramine. In sum: the KDF filters are very good at removing chlorine from hot water, making them ideal for shower filters. What is left to determine is how much ammonia is slipping past the KDF, causing the no-doubt false positive chlorine test result, and what are the overall human health considerations about showering in water that is bearing a trace amount of ammonia. Hope that helps.

+El Tuco Hi, Q : if any Chloramine is present would kdf-55 media remove it? if not what % would it remove? 50% ? 80% ?
@proudpappaw
@proudpappaw 8 жыл бұрын
+TeslasLoveChild -- Good question. Here's the practical aspect of the whole thing. If your incoming tap water is being disinfected by chloramine rather than chlorine, that simply means that the chlorine has been spiked with a trace amount of ammonia. A KDF-55 shower filter will effectively remove all the chlorine and "most" of the ammonia component of chloramine. In other words, a slight trace of ammonia left in the shower stream after passing through a KDF-55 shower filter isn't enough to pose a threat to skin, hair, eyes, etc. The ammonia is at trace levels when combined with the chlorine, and then reduced even further -- but still enough in the filtered water to render a "false" positive reading on a simple OTO (Orthotolidine reagent) chlorine tester. In sum, if you're using a KDF-55 shower filter, it really doesn't matter whether your incoming water is being disinfected with chlorine or chloramine, the KDF-55 media is very appropriate for the job.

El Tuco I see. I thought Chloramine is a different compound as it merges with the ammonia .. but if it's neutralisation is simply de-combing them then the Q is, can KDF remove ammonia ?

Thank you for the informative video, I just wanted to mention doing some extra research on reverse osmosis. what happens is a decalcification of the water which then passes through your body, because of the decalcification the liver has to work twice as hard to make it usable. Please be careful when drinking reverse osmosis. I am a 3rd year medical student if that makes any difference in my statement. Best wishes

Vitamin C filters or powder is what's successfully used to neutralise 99% of chlorine and chloramine 👍🏼 I've been reading about gravity water filters lately and the newest one propur says on its independent lab test that it filters out (I think it was 98-99%) of chloramine and chlorine. The Berkey filters may be just as affective too.

Hi Thermax292, I'm French and was selling KDF filters 15 years ago although the market was not ready yet. At this time, Brittany (in the West) water was contaminated by Nitrates due to intensive pork farming. So I tested the water and found that Nitrates were transformed into Nitrites which are even more dangerous... So I stopped selling KDF filter immediatly. KDF works well on some types of contaminants but be aware it can also turn some others into more harmfull contaminants. Dieter

From an Environmental Engineer: Any chlorine and monochlorine are not carcinogenic themselves. It is through a reaction in the pipe network with NOM (Natural Organic Matter) that chlorine gas (Cl2) will react to form carcinogenic compounds called DBP's (Disinfection By Products). Weather the reaction will occur of not depends on the residence time (time the water is in the pipe). The EPA makes the utilities test the farthest distance from the facility for DBP's. DBP's are highly regulated and can be prevented from forming by reducing the need for high concentrations of chlorine gas disinfection. DBP's used to be a problem until the DWA (Drinking Water Act) in the 70's, but anymore because they better understand something that they did not know even existed. Feel free to message or comment to me. I can answer questions, comments, and concerns.

Hey buddy! Thanks for putting the word out. Did you know that NDMA is a byproduct of chloramine disinfection and one, it is extremely toxic, and two, it is not removed by reverse osmosis or ANY TYPE of carbon or distillation? (NDMA nullification requires UV light ten times more intense than UV radiation designed for disinfection.) I've been around the block with tap water, various filters, etc. and Ii finally decided that there are too many variables and too many chemicals and chemical by-products in tap water with which to deal. And, in addition to the added fluoride and chloramine and the pollution in the groundwater, there is the issue of several miles of pipes that run from the water tank in your town to your home. They are probably 20 years old and WHO KNOWS WHAT is growing inside them and WHO KNOWS WHAT is leeching into the water from them! Here;s what I do: I have a Royal Berkey gravity filter but I use my Berkey in a special way. I have an AWG (atmospheric water generator from DroughtMasters*com) that removes 6 gallons of water per day from the air here in Clearwater, Florida. I then pour that water through my Royal Berkey which contains 4 Black Berkey carbon block filters. The AWG unit contains a UV light that kills bacteria, etc. I plan on having my output water tested by National Testing Labs in Ohio. By the way, have you had your output water tested for fluoride and NDMA? Cheers! Steve Downing, Clearwater, Florida ** Sweetpuppy*com/BigBerkey **

Coconut charcoal works much better with gravity and no water pressure. The fliters he is talking about would work for a shower but you would be replacing it far too often to be cost effective. Coconut charcoal in small amounts will only do a small amount just as anything else. It will only absorb so much. So an effective shower filter would have to be rather large, or you would be replacing it too often. There are several systems that will work, like reverse osmosis or UV but they are costy and still require maintenance and possible filter changes and electricity. He is putting out good useful information about the chemical process. I imagine chloramine will become more widely used not less. Good on Ya !

Black carbon and KDF filters don't work for any type of chlorine removal. I have tried and tested many types of these filters. I have also done some research and have found that Vitamin C filters have been very effective in removing both chlorine and chloramines in the water. Apparently, vitamin C filters are only manufactured in Japan/Korea, not the U.S. I wonder why? Anyone have any experience with these Vitamin C filters? I just purchased one by UBS (made in Korea) with fence-sitting reviews. The downside thus far would be the constant filter changing every month that I've read so much about. Hmm. Help?

Good Point! When reading filter performance data, many times laboratories will list the results as reducing "chloramines" (hopefully in addition to chlorine). The term "chloramines" as used in the water industry describes the three compounds that can be formed from the reaction of ammonia with chlorine: monochloramine, dichloramine and trichloramine. In other words, if the data says that a particular filter reduces chloramines, you are good to go for any of the three compounds. $95 might seem expensive for a filter, but unfortunately, it's not. A state of the art drinking water system at point-of-use where there is virtually no risk of recontamination from water pipes in your home, could easily cost you over $1,000 per faucet plus replacement filters from $125 to as much as $275. The question for you (and by inference your family), is how good is good? I've had cancer twice and I want to get the best protection possible.
@Houseofbears

if I claim to reduce chloramines that is not data. After all if the filter I sell chloramines by5% I can say it reduces chloramines, as a true American Businessman I do not owe my customers honesty, I am in it to make money!!! If I show tests that say the filter reduces chloramines from a level of 5 ppm to below 1 ppm that is scant data but it's a start.

The water company does a nice job getting the water to the house. Where I fault them is not telling the public the water is good for the toilet and washing machine but not for drinking. They should be warning the public to finish the filtering process with a filter that will remove fluoride and chlorines. No one over 12 years of age should be drinking fluoride. Fluoride was made to swish around your mouth and spit it out, not swallow it.

The use of kdf requires testing by a lab with a color spectrometer for accurate readings. Home strips don't give a reliable read when the water has been filtered by kdf. Standard 55 kdf can't filter chloramine. There is a 85 kdf which can filter chloramine. It's harder to remove than chlorine, so getting it all out from a shower filter isn't yet possible. You can reduce it however, with the right filter. Carbon alone is NOT sufficient to remove chloramine. It required too much media.

Thank you for this video, and you are correct in what you say - but, BUT, there is more, a LOT more to carefully consider! Most municipal water supply systems, meaning government-regulated, do NOT have your best interests at heart. Government officials and politicians are not in charge as most people think, they get their orders from sources that you have never seen and probably you have never heard their names. That is why it is FAR better to live in a rural location where you can have your own private well, if the ground-water in that area is not contaminated already from 'fracking'. No chlorine or other toxic chemicals from your own well. Another option is to have a quality metal roof then collect rainwater and filter it properly, OH, strike that if you live in the USA - In most locations the massive chemtrails nix that option! OH WELL!

Don't buy a filter designed for removing chlorine and expect it to filter chloramine. They were right about it being your responsibility to educate yourself as to what the water treatment is for your area. Chlorine gasses off when it is exposed to air but when you compound it with ammonia is stays binded. It's not the filter company's fault that you ordered a chlorine filter to remove chloramine.

It's worth rememberin chlorine is one of the most reactive elements there is that is why it is such a powerful disinfecting agent Not only is it reactive it is volatile, so if you leave chlorinated water in a jug for a few hours it will disappear. secondly chlorine is so reactive, if you put a few eyedrops of some organic substance, say milk a large jug of chlorinated water, the chlorine would instantly react and bond with the organic material and turn into harmless salts. Basically do not worry about chlorine, worry about the other stuff that might be in your water.

Water distillers can be an excessive and costly process - while the distillation process can remove healthy elements of the water as well. If you are looking to remove fluoride, your best option is a high quality reverse osmosis system like those from Waranu Water or other reputable companies such as those with Omnipure filters. (Anything NSF tested) The system will remove a whole host of contaminants, chemicals and metals. Good luck

A lot of whole house filters claim to remove chloramine, but they either don't or they crap out and stop removing it after about 1 year (a house filter is supposed to last at least 7 years).

If you are buying bottled water, do yourself a favor and get a Berkey. A friend of mine has R/O and it tastes just as good as the Berkey black filters + PF-2. It doesn't require plumbing and is cheaper to replace filters. The shower filter is also very good, skin is softer, hair, and chlorine smell is gone!

It would seem to be quite prudent, after you find the correct filter for your situation, to keep a constant monitoring of your water source just in case the supplier decides to change the chemical additives it uses to "purify" the water at their source. You may well have to retrofit your home system with different filters should the filters that you are currently using not be able to filter out the new chemical additive.

Mary, I take iodine every day and because I use RO water for drinking I also take a trace mineral supplement. If you have enough iodine in your body your thyroid won't adsorb florid.

Ozzirt The EPA says that chlorine at low levels causes harm to the environment by killing organisms and bacteria. I think where the experts base their opinions about the dangers of consumption of chlorine is based on the fact the human body is also made up of living organisms and bacteria. As I have stated before I'm a firm believer in chlorine in our water systems to keep the pipes clean, however I also believe its our responsibility to remove it before we inject it or bath in it.

Thank you for making this important video! It's very good, but I'm confused about something. It seems to talk about gravity flow filters for your kitchen and shower filters interchangeably. Those are two drastically different systems. For instance a small, screw-on shower filter with a little KDF vs a counter-top Berkey gravity flow unit in the kitchen with huge, multi-purpose filters. I can believe that the shower filter didn't do the job, but have you tested the Berkey? Also, it sounds as if you're saying no gravity flow system does what it claims to. Am I understanding correctly? RO is not an option for me, so do you know of a gravity flow kitchen water filter that does address monochloramines? Really appreciate your help!

I am not sure abt Flouride because dentist would only agree differently. They used tell me to get water bottled with flouride in it, and it would help reduce cavity-teeth. Flouride is only danger if get on your skin or hair but if drinking it-it is a different story. I used to think flouride is danger, I would keep ordering organic mouthwashing or toothpaste. Then i got 10 cavities because I didn't drink or swish flouride that strengten teeth. In result, I only got one.

Hi! I just researched it and my water source does use chloramines. Have you tested water from the berkey to see if it does not remove chloramines? Also, did you test water with the berkey with the arsenic and flouride filters?
