I think the key is ease of use! I used some absolutely horrid cameras for projects in college, but I managed to get really great images out of them by working around the shortcomings. These older cameras can still shoot with incredible quality, but the number of things you'll need to consider or potentially work around is of course going to be higher vs a newer, more technically advanced system.

As an fs7 owner.. id say yes it is OK, but it was always waiting in the wings for a smaller af version that is the fx6. My opinon is the fs7 is quite a barrier to shooting fliud doc work vs the fx6. But of course for certainl looks.. like hunting manual focus it is fine

100% agree. I picked up a FS7 mk1 from a DP who upgraded to the FX6. It was pretty much a entire kit with minus the v-lock batteries, lenses and audio gear. All of which I already owned. I've been using the FS7 filming interviews, conferences, sports and weddings. The last 3 videos on my channel are all shot with the FS7. It's fun using a purpose built video camera that I don't have to baby around like its brand new. One thing, the ND filters are a little funky when they click over, nothing I'm worried about though.

I bought an FS700 used, upgraded it so I can shoot 12-bit 4K raw, bought an F55 used a year later, and about two years later bought a brand new FX30. The FX30 was rented out before I had gotten it in the mail. People are excited about new cameras, but unless you're renting, you can get as good or better image quality from used cameras, as you've said. I just directed a feature-length documentary in Mexico, and we shot it with two FX30s as the B cams and an FS7 II as the A cam. We shot with a kit lens, a Zeiss photo lens, and a set of Fujinon MK lenses. It was an awesome time shooting with 3 cameras regardless of what they were. Also, a week or two ago, I bought a used F3.

As filmmakers, it's very easy for us to fall prey to the hype beast of modern camera companies' marketing techniques. *Especially* young filmmakers, who really believe that the newest, latest, and greatest will put them ahead of the pack. To quote a cinematography legend: "I'd shoot it on an iPhone if it suited the story." To young filmmakers, I'd recommend renting and testing lots of used cameras, and figuring out what you like- not what Sony or Canon tell you you should like. Great video Luc, thanks for creating for us.

This year I decided to take filmmaking work seriously, so I sold it all, as I am making a leap of faith into Sony system planning to get an fx3 - found best price in Thailand /new minus tax, for price of used one elsewhere - buying in Asia makes alot of sense/ so Im going to invest into the filmmaking part of my creative journey soon.

Idk, my dad gave me a used Sony F55 and I think the image is amazing, BUT, the fact remains that recording media for these old cams is expensive. Like, SxS cards, AXSM cards, XQD cards etc. The card readers alone for the AXSM and SxS cost more than then used camera! And the lens mount requires the purchase of an adapter. But once you have all that, I guess it's okay to stop spending money on gear. I would have preferred a used C300 II.

Hi buddy, I recently sold my FS7 to buy an FX6 for the reason that the FS7 is quite heavy "12 pounds" and I have to watch my back when I use a gimbal for some music videos and I also wanted the FX6 to have the RAW option without having to buy the FS7 adapter. But I'll be honest, I miss the FS7 for being a great and robust camera. Obviously I'm 10 pounds lighter now with the fx6 in action, full frame, 4k DCI 120 fps is a great tools for my workflorw, but at the end of the day the FS7 is a winner camera. I picked up a Sony A9 in fair condition from KEH over three years ago for $2100 that didn’t come with the box or manual or anything. When it showed up it looked brand new and it only had 2100 on the shutter count. It’s been my action sports camera that still works perfectly to this day. I’ve been eyeballing a Sony FS5 mark two on Facebook marketplace for $1300 that comes with 18-105 lens and two batteries. But I decided since I am just getting into videography to build either my Sony A7rv or A7iv into a running gun video rig. I bought all the accessories and built up my A7iv and turned it into my dedicated video rig and I still use my A7rv for my portraits and family photos I take. I figured instead of buying a dedicated video camera just built one up and work with what I got. My main business is portraits but I want to and start offering videography to my clients. great video by the way I just found your channel and I am a couple in of your work and I really enjoy your content.

I'm currently working on a short film and a documentary. I'm using the FS7 mark 1 which I got used for about £1000, its been great for work and yeah it might be fun to use a Komodo on the short film or an fx9 for the documentary but then there would be less money for building the set for the film and less money for travel and graphics/animation on the doc. The set will make way more difference than a Komodo and the travel and the animation will make far more difference than the FX9.

I shoot almost daily with the Sony FS7 M1 and it's just such a great camera on so many levels - bullet proof, great feature set, reliable and solid image quality even in 2023. I honestly don't think it's a great ENG or handheld camera, but obviously it serves you well in this capacity. Yes, equipment does matter to a degree - I love my Canon C100 M2 but it's codec and lack of 4k have really limited what I can do with it. Still at the end of the day, content is king!!

The big difference between old hi-end cameras and new is their size and weight. I bought Sony FX3 mainly because in its tiny size it can deliver the same quality that before would be achieved only with bulky pro level gear. If I'd be truck driver :) I'd also looked to second hand pro cameras, but it's not reaaly fun to carry all this stuff by yourself.

Great advice. It's a terrible symptom of vacuuming up too much KZbin content that makes people feel like the gear they have is inadequate or they can't go out and shoot something until they buy [insert gadget here]. I like the fact that you are prioritising the actual content: what is in front of the lens, not what is behind it. I get caught up in gear nonsense too often, but I know some other doc filmmakers who couldn't care less about gear. One I am thinking of has been nominated for a lot of awards this year for his debut feature doc which had a global theatrical release, but I had to explain to him only recently (and long after he finished that film) what an ND filter was. The tech is the last thing on his mind which is very refreshing.

They are small, reliable, cheap, have excellent 4K and autofocus, Slog2, 3, HLG, Cine and even though I get snoffs from Full Frame people, they are amazing in low light. I was disappointed with full frame a7iii as I thought low light performance would be much better. Imagine my shock when I had to pixel-peep 4K footage to see the difference. Then I got newest a6700 that goes 4K 120fps and has more dynamic range and in body stabilization. I returned it as it was much noisier (faster sensor and it seems it's really hard to get +30fps 4K that is as good in low light as a6400 is). Every time in the last 2 years that I buy another body I'm returning it and sticking to my reliable a6400 tiny apsc cameras. Never ever did any of my clients say that I need Full Frame or that my footage is not good enough, actually everyone is praising how sharp and vibrant the materials I deliver are.

zv-e10 (same sensor as 6400) has headphone jack, both have visual audio levels, a6700 is not reliable for long shoots as it overheats, 8-bit of zv-e10/6400 requires less computing so less heat. Noise should be roughly the same, but A6700/FX30 are a better option for higher ISOs up to 3200, aps-c is bad for anything after that. Difference between 10-bit & 8-bit sony is: - improvement in highlight colors thus details e.g. when shooting sky - slight improvement in shadow/highlight rolloff @@PeterSchramm3

The camera is for most people the smallest investment they made if they are a serious DoP or a documentarist. And is an investment and not a cost, that means the camera must produce money (and not your work). Usually lenses are the biggest investment. However because you change the camera more often than lenses (lenses they can last for your career), the cost in your career for cameras can be quite important. And remember that you can rent a top level camera for cheap if your project really need one.

Hope to shoot more EPL's and BTS for films with it. The 3log3Cine looks great

I follow the exact same path for stills photography. If my camera gear can only record what was top of the line 10 years ago then so what? There were wonderful things produced 10 years ago and I only have myself to blame if I cannot do likewise. Shorter version: it's the lighting.

Great advice …. For anyone shooting docs, I would also add a Z280 to your list for consideration… I love to run and gun with my FS7 when shooting docs, but when I have to move even faster and lighter, the Z280 serves me well.

Sound advice Luc! I have tried telling some young guys to buy used cameras and they look at me like I have 2 heads. They want that unboxing experience!

Hustle hustle hustle. I just wrapped on a reality show this week, next month I'll be working on a feature in teh Art department. I know its not nessavery, but I think as a director atleast knowing the language of every department is importnat. Which is the ultimate goal for me. I do have a kind of off topic question for you though if you see this: Do you have any recomendaitons on practicing puling focus. I really struggle with it. I have to rely heavily on my autofocus but I want to be better shooting manually.

I think the last camera I bought new was a Nikon D90 in 2008, my first DSLR. It really just does not make sense to pay new prices for cameras and most lenses.

Yes - totally agree. Use the basics and limitations to expand your creativity. What do you think of the URSA Mini Pro 4.2k as a doc workhorse?

I love buying used gear. I picked up an old EF mount Sigma 70-200 f2.8 with some fungus inside for USD150. Took it apart, cleaned the lens elements inside, and now it's good to go on my Lumix S5.

I love this vid. So first of all thank you. I’ve been a very casual KZbinr over the last few years but I wanna step it up in the new year by filming stuff around my local town for a KZbin channel. I want to call them docs but I’m sure they’ll be far from that. My point is that I have an old dlsr and I’ve been looking at upgrading but didn’t even consider the types of cameras you mentioned. I will definitely have a look at used stuff and although a cinema camera won’t suit my style as I’ll be more vlogging and adding timelapse stuff to the channel but it’s really made me think. Thanks again. ATB

Thanks for the video, a lot of solid points there - I appreciate that you took the time to put it together so nicely. One point I missed though: You didn't tell what the reason was, that they filmed a show like Trafficked on such an old camera. Sure it's possible, but was it done for monetary reasons? The DP had a bunch of them lying around and wanted to squeeze out a few more years? Availability of spare parts, if sth breaks at remote places? Just because it's possible doesn't mean you have to avoid an fx6 or fx9 on a big show like this...

Actually in my country there are rarely used cameras for the price that good I would buy it over the new one. In most cases when I buy new one it's cheaper because I can write off VAT when camera is my company expense. And if someone got "so called linear tax" they can write off another 19% ... so actually new one is for the 68.31% of the list prices at the end. Never seen used one for price that good. The only exception would be when another company sells used one, they I can still write off both taxes, but companies rarely sell used gear ... so ... new it is in most cases. I sometimes got a chance to buy used lenses, but it's also quite rare. I guess your advice is 100% accurate in states ...

Sold my FS7 a while back and got an FX6. Shot a couple of feature docs on the FS7, but I never really liked the image out. It was more than the funky colour. It doesn't handle strong backlight for example. Skin tones can turn into one big blob of colour. Not imagining this as I know a load of DPs who say the same. But the worst thing for me was what I can FS7 'smear'. Just something not right with movement. Anyway, not bashing the FS7, but I have to disagree slightly that you can't see a difference with newer cams. The FX6 for me has a way nicer image and is worth every penny. I also get hired as an 'FX6/9' shooter a lot - just cause clients specify those cameras. Pays itself off very quickly.

I have one two and I love the image it gets. Fantastic value for the money. ONLY thing I don't like is how susceptible they are to light banding with certain led lighting at venues. No other camera I've used has that issue

This is great advice. Learn the craft. Some of these cine camera's have better image quality and bit rates than new mirrorless cameras.

Can someone please enlighten me, what is the benefit and pros to shooting on some of these "made for TV" cameras such as the F5 or Fs7 comparative to a Sony A7iv? The quality and fidelity, not to mention the portability of these hybrid DSLR's systems seem perfect for documentary film-making once paired with the appropriate accessories. I know it is all down to personal taste and circumstance but I'd appreciate some pointers!

Hey Luc! As usual, I appreciate your terrific advice as always. Making the jump from commercial/marketing work for 28 years to full-time doc filmmaking, I sold my other run and gun cameras (including a Panasonic DVX200) and bought a USED Canon C500 Mark ii. The camera I bought from someone on a Canon C500 group on Facebook is absolutely pristine, had only 32 hours on the clock and even came with 2 years left on the premium Canon Support Plan. Plus, the seller threw in a boatload of Bright Tangerine, Wooden Camera, SmallRig and Zacuto accessories (shoulder rigs, 7" SmallRig monitor, dovetails, handles, cage, dovetails ect) not to mention SIX V-Mount batteries. The out the door price for ALL of this?? $9600! This even included shipping from Texas to me in Michigan. I originally was leaning towards one of the FX cameras saw a number of great videos demoing and recommending this camera and I already have a collection of Canon L lenses. So I jumped at it and am loving it. I also took your advice and bought a full-boat at AOD and am loving every second of it--aside from the fact that I wish I could actually talk with Mark or Michael one on one. Thanks again for your great work and great advice, Luc. I hope to have the opportunity to meet up with you one day too. I'm on your waiting list!

My first prefessional camera was my Panasonic HVX 200E, the only regeret that made that camera obsolete for me was it didnt have the possibillity to change lens, So 5-6 years later I upgraded to Panasonic AG-AF101E that was sitting arount on a shelf as NOS at a store in Israel. So I bought it of ebay and was happy about it. I think the only new gear I have is one chineese lens I rarly use, a couple of pirated batteries, a chineese mike and some cables. My coolest lens that is almost impossible to film with is a Soviet made 1000mm mirror lens. That type of gear is impossible to buy new.

Very informative and excellent video and advice. However, when you talked about buying a barely used second hand camera and letting the seller "eat" the price of opening it, you failed to mention that you also don't get any warranty on second hand. If something breaks, you won't be able to go back to the store and get it fixed/replaced etc.
@LucForsyth Жыл бұрын
Yes, this is true...but most warranties are designed by the manufacturers not to be necessary as cameras have an expected lifespan. I cover myself for this stuff through gear insurance. Worth the savings for me. But you're not wrong!

I bought a FS700R in very good condition for a thousand euros and a shogun inferno for 500 euros. I am using the lenses i allready use as a photo shooter on my Alpha 7RIII and i am surprised, how good the FS700R+Shogun Inferno is. I can shoot ProRes Raw continiously on 4k in 60fps and also can do very nice slow-motion with up to 240fps 2k. Now i have to do the one thing that makes you better: Film, film, film.

Hey Luc! I am watching the S11 premiere right now, and I was wondering if you could tell me which settings the Canon XA cameras use. I have an old G30 series from some years ago that I want to throw back into the mix, but can’t ever remember if the AVCHD or MP4 is ideal, or which mode to choose for ease of use. Figured the show contestants have their cameras set to one of the AV, TV, or P modes over manual. Thanks! Keep crushing it.
