I'm addicted to Berlin Strings and how well the skills of the players are brought out my headphones, even through this long complicated chain of mics and sample engines and another player playing the samples then uploading to KZbin and all. I usually say that guitar and especially electric guitar is the most dynamic instrument of all, but strings are very close second, and it's fantastic that technology can capture that. Especially when one (me) was an aspiring violist once but then became a guitar player but still love violins.

I have had the pleasure of recording many fine string groups and soloists over the past 35 years, mostly in concert hall or cathedral acoustics and I am really wowed by the staccato and short articulations in the Synchron. In fact Synchron seems to be most faithful to tone I am accustomed to hearing in almost all of its articulations. Your playing, btw, is brilliant. Not at all surprised but delighted to hear your performing skill. Afflatus also seems strong on realism in terms of tone, leaving the mixer to decide how to style a sound. I’ll be listening to this video for days. Thank you so much, Dom!

Hi, Thanks to put out so many great informational videos on this channel of yours. Highly appreciated. It is definitely true that nothing beats a live recording with real sublime string players, as nothing beats the live listening experience in the space in which it is recorded, hopefullly we go back to full live concerts soon. As one of the string players in a top notch niche orchestra I love what strings can achieve to express 🙂Those Synchron impress. I look forward to the following up part. Did you give Realitone Sunset Strings a go, unique library, well done! And when going to solo instruments NI is up there for sure, as is East West, Enjoy, have fun....

Hi Dom, Thank You for making this video. I love the character of CineStrings Core, and Orchestral Tools Berlin Strings. By the way, CineStrings Core will be getting a major update ver. 2 in the near future, with a new GUI, and other improvements, hopefully they fixed the clicks issues as well when playing at lower buffer settings, or using multiple mics. More String Library Reviews like this one would be awesome, and very helpful. So, YES, if you have the time, please post more Strings Libraries Walkthroughs, Reviews, ..etc. Very Appreciated. Cheers, Muziksculp

From what you demoed I prefer Orchestral Tools and Cinestring for the legatos, HZ Strings for the massive lush sound, VSL for the details. I don't like the VSL legato... I use CSS for the lush, vibrato sound and for the consistent articulations.

+1 for a review on Afflatus Strings. They've been on my wishlist for a while now and I think they're relatively unknown and underrated, partially because people see the price point and assume they're overpriced instead of just pricey (and worth it) - not realizing that it's essentially a bundle of libraries packaged as one due to all the playing styles contained. And they're Divisi, which is something I've been looking for a lot more recently when assembling my own brand of Strings Library Cocktail Multis.
@5ammy13
@5ammy13 5 ай бұрын
Not what you may want, but I have it and my take is that they are just amazing strings. They have a lot of different patches that cover a variety of playing styles. You have Lush Violins, Chamber Violins, Minimalist Violins, Scene d'Amour Violins... and you have these for all the sections, Celli, Basses and Violas too. And that's just scratching the surface. They offer a ton of inspiration, but there is a caveat with them though. Because they offer so many styles and desgined patches, Afflatus isn't your bread and butter Strings Library. It can't do everything, and you may not find all the patches you need. I think Afflatus is the best second string library you can pick up to supplement your main libraries, and also offer really inspiring tones. Note that I am referring here to use cases that primarily depend on the orchestra, like film, tv, game score writing, media and ad composition, orchestral production music, etc. If you are looking at Afflatus for a pop, rock setting or to add on as a colour, Afflatus will be more than capable. It is only when you need in-depth strign writing, Afflatus can suffer a bit. Not by a lot, you may still be able to do 90% of the stuff, but it can still be a little lacking. For example, the legato is great, but you cannot compare it to a legato from a full string library. If your Violins are soaring and playing melodies that make them stand out, Afflatus might just fall short. So these are a few things to consider, but other than that, absolutley lovely library.

Great library selection though in my opinion you missed Cinematic Studio Strings which is on the best string library out there and a leader in the legato range. The library also has a enormous amount of dynamics and emotions is still my favorite to this day. Although I know it doesn't fit every style of composition.

Dom do you believe in random ? I was just looking today at your fav orchestral librairies played live and, BOOM, a dedicated String Libraries land tonight. The timing couldn't be more perfect. So, I'm a die-hard Synchron Fan (even VSL knows it, hehe, proud owner of Synchron Strings Pro and Elite Strings), a former Orchestral Tools fan too, I had the hands also on AudioBro MSS, on CINEMATIC STUDIO STRINGS, also, HIGHLY REGARDED in its own right. I tried also the Symphonic, Chamber and solo Strings from Spitfire audio, great products. A bit disappointed by The Native Instruments attempt to make a Symphonic String library, but eh, worths the try. At least we all know that with your videos, Dom, weekend begins 😎 lots of love from a French fan in Spain !

@vincenttohier7268

Yassas Dom ❤️ and thanks for replying. I liked MSS because it has this lush, suave sound - specially on the sustains. The legato options are also great - not to mention the built-in divisi option - like Synchron Strings and Elite Strings sold together. There are lots of ways to customize your sound, it even comes with the spacializing option for the divisi... On the downside, the samples themselves are a bit harsh, in terms of sound color. Making legato tremolos are difficult. And, even if this library is GREAT for this warm, generous Hollywood sound, it's definitely less versatile than the Synchron Strings. That's my piece, my friend, I'm nowhere next to your expertise, thanks again for asking - and for reading 😀

Thanks so much Dom. You are so passionate and a great performer which is the best combination. ❤ VSL sound detail is the best to my ears but what is the 2nd best would you say? CineStrings? Is there any of them that can do well detailed and organic especially for soft playing but also have big sound when you need it? Again if you can give the best and 2nd best for this characteristic that would be great! Articulation-wise, which one is the best and 2nd best both for number of articulations and also for realism and playability of articulations. The last thing: I have to program things based on the performance notes that appear on the scores. I use Dorico Pro. I know some libraries have easier set up for articulation and performance programming. Looks like Spitfire is more CC based while some other ones like Cinematic Studio Strings are key switch based. So from the perspective of user friendliness and flexibility / versatility which string library is better? Again if you can comment on the top 2 or 3 libraries to cater this aspect well would be great! Thanks again. 🙏🏽

Hi Dom, big fan of the channel, i wonder if you can help answer a question for me or even perhaps do a video on it. I can never get my mixes to the same loudness as commercially released edm tracks. Even after it comes back from mastering, i never master my own, it's still way way quieter when i do a direct A n B comparisson to top line edm track. My tracks are nicely mixed, well balanced and i'm signed to a label. But i am still in search of the holy grail. I.m always two steps away from from achieving that pro polished sound and loudness. Now i've come to the conclusion that maybe my tracks are too dynamic. The gap between the rms and the peak is too large. So therefore when they are been mastered the peaks are preventing them from going louder. Therfore if i reduce the dynamic range then my RMS will be louder. Is this correct way of thinking? I always gain stage correctly, never have anything on the master bus and always leave plently of head room for the master. So should i try using a compressor, or limiter and saturation on nearly every track in my mix to bring down the dynamic range and increase the gain? . I saw this was mentioned in another channel i follow and i;ve been trying this and it seems to be one of the things i've not been doing. But if this method is gong the right way to create louder crisper more polished mixes what woud be the best method? Lots to think about so any chance you could cover this please? Many thanks

From my experience the VSL strings must be heavily equalized at around 1k to 6k to fit into a cinematic mix. Anyway it's possible. The vst soothe 2 does an amazing job to smooth overlaying strings and other orchestrated instruments and turn the complete sound into a real classic orchestra. That's pretty amazing. Otherwise you get the classic Orchestra Pokemon sound of 1998.
@lughar
@lughar 2 жыл бұрын
You external sidechain one layer of strings to another in orden of importance of the mix, to paint the picture, or just soften the sound within itself? I mean using soothe. Like sidechain the violins and violas to cellos or simply soften the 1-6k area?

You should definitely include LA Scoring Strings and/or Modern Scoring Strings in the next part, they still are the best out there IMO. Also Areia may sound even bigger than Hans Zimmer Strings so this would have been interesting to have them compared side by side.
@NanoAugur
@NanoAugur 2 жыл бұрын
As an owner of Areia I'd characterize them as nimble and precise instead of big. Usually I have to double or triple them with other libraries to get a "big" sound with them. They are however quite an important component in such a mixture! The "Modern" mix does tend to sound energetic but I prefer doing my own mix with the mic positions (which are great). Maybe take a look at them after the update for them is out - we've been waiting for a while for that, but supposedly it'll happen soon-ish now. Also it's really nice in Areia to have all the articulations be the same across all the sections, so there's no guesswork on what you have. Same with how Sonokinetic's (Divisi) Orchestral Strings patches are universal, which is currently the library I start with when writing - lovely natural and neutral starting point - can't really do bombastic though, but amazing for the softer side, and since you can control the room/release samples volume, you can make it work with other libraries very, very nicely. I wouldn't mind a look at the latest iteration of LASS and a look at MSS as well, the latter is something I'm also eyeing to add to my arsenal as it seems technically advanced (but from what I've heard does need some setting up to get it to sound closer to what you want and has quite the learning curve - same with Modern Scoring Brass, they're not instantly playable with the best results out of the box). Lately I find that if I see Divisi in a library and there's a healthy option of mic positions - if the tone is also to my taste, I really want to grab it at some point.

@Mr Greg G | Orchestral Composer Hi, I wonder how is MSS compared to Berlin Strings/VSL Synchron/8dio Century Strings?
@pr4vus.studios
@pr4vus.studios Жыл бұрын
@@Darkred11 MSS is the most complete String library you will find, there is no articulation missing. This being said, it's hard to play it live due to the latency introduced by the legato sample. You can reduce it but not completely remove it. Among the choices you give, I would either go with MSS or VSL. Berlin and 8Dio don't sound realistic to my ears and have too many flaws.

I've been feeling that VSL samples sound too artificial, but this string run-through indicates differently.

What a pity that CineStrings is incapable of a firm attack on the 1st violins legato patch! The sound is gorgeous but the CPU usage is terrible, which is probably what caused these clicks and pops. I have the library but never use it... CSS remains my default. The Hans Zimmer library seems to me a collection of weird choices. I dislike VSL due to using iLok, but the realism and depth seemed the best to me in this bunch. When auditioning legato patches one should remember to start a new phrase every few seconds. These neverending phrases aren't realistic. We also need to hear pairs of legato notes (separated pairs), like in the Carnival of Venice... in order to exercise attack, legato and release.

Most of these libraries are all great, and I understand why a serious composer and producer will want multiple libraries to combine their strengths, but for those that don't have a big budget, I really wonder, is it even worth considdering all the money this costs when you have solutions like EastWest Composer cloud where you get Every libray they make for as cheap as 9.95 $ a month ? its libraries worth many thousends of dollars. This is not more than what most of us already pay for a Netflix/HBO streaming service a month. And unless you compose for a living most users really dont need 30+ different microphone mixes so no need to pick their pro solution. And with their new Opus version I personly think their libraries is sounding great. Yes they have many older libraries in there, but there is really a big selection of just about every kind of sound styles.

Definitely agree to the pricey aspect you are mentioning. There's no doubt, that these are great libraries - loved the Hans Zimmer one BTW. - but as a beginner / someone with a low budget, the question is if I need that many different kind of string types. So I stick with what Cubase 12 pro offers 😁. But yeah, great to see what kind of libraries exist and how complex they can be.

@putalawea equisde Agreed, Its not all of composer cloud that is top notch, but I’d think people would gladly pay twice the ammount of composer cloud if not more if it was from one of the other major library brands

Also to consider on a budget is embracing fakeness for how good it can be. I mean, the mellotron intro on Watcher Of The Skies is as fake as can be but really is the best thing for the song. It's massive. Mellotrons are my favourite example but drum machines and 8 bit samples are perfect examples as well and most of these can be found free or cheap. Mellotrons - not really but I got a good one, maybe the best, in the Arturia V Collection (30+ keyboards) which was a total of 150euro on a crazy crossgrade + holiday deal (so very little money for that one instrument if you value all of them equally, which I damn near do). Otherwise yeah, valid points. I would suggest spitfire discovery labs and especially BBC Orchestra which are all free. They're really good and you should test the limits of things like these before spending if you're on a budget.

Playing the samples with your hands, as compared to using a uniform MIDI file, gives us an unscientific Apples to Oranges Comparison. Ann-Kathrin Dern's approach is much more scientific. (She's German), and gives a true Apples to Apples comparison.

@@baduk5707 spitfire audio. For me the sound is too synthetic, because of the many many players. So you miss the detail. So I chose symphonic strings for big orchestra and chamber strings for smaller orchestras (both spitfire) .
