MY PORCH BBQ

Жыл бұрын

Welcome to My Porch BBQ! In this video, I am discussing some of the top features to consider when you're in the market for a premium smoker. I've owned over 13 smokers and spent thousands of dollars on them, so I've learned a thing or two along the way. One of the inspirations for my video was a KZbinr named Offset Rookie. He has an awesome channel and recently highlighted the Workhorse Pits smoker. He made a great video explaining why the Workhorse Pit 1075 is one of the coolest premium smokers. However, I decided to take a different approach in my video. There are so many great options for premium smokers out there, like Shirley Fabrication, Workhorse Pits, and Boathouse smokers, just to name a few. It's important to think about what features are most important to you when making your decision. Happy smoking! Please like and subscribe.
Check out my playlist called Legends for my other BBQ discussion videos.

I also think you should take a look at Boathouse smokers. Brian is doing some fantastic work.

@@myporchbbq I look at BBQ like a sport. So I'm like a sports fan is with football. (If that makes sense). I'm a gear nerd, so videos about good quality pits and equipment are kick ass. But, ultimately, I think most of us in the sport of BBQ are all trying to up our game. Brisket is the most challenging for any cook, we all know that. If you're asking my opinion about good videos; I'd say stay away from the big intros (lame) and stay humble. The guys who act like they're super excited on crack the whole video are extra annoying. In my opinion, Matt Pittman (Meat Church) is becoming one of the best to watch. Sorry for such a long post.

@hulkhuggett i truly do appreciate your insights. KZbin is tricky and you end up chasing your tail if you are not careful. I think your opinion is spot on. Your advice is very similar to another viewer. He hit me up on Instagram and we traded numbers. He has turned out to be a really cool guy. My email is myporchbackyardbbq@gmail I have a brisket cook coming up and I have been trying to think of a way to make a video that is not the same old thing. Again, thank you so much for your thoughts, for watching.

Great video man! When I was in the market, Shirley came up again and again vs. Lone Star Grillz. I went with LSG cause I live in Texas. Paul makes a great product tho.

I appreciate the detail this video provides. Thank you!!! What is the wait time from ordering to receiving?
@myporchbbq
@myporchbbq Жыл бұрын
Many premium pit builders have different wait times. It is not uncommon to have to wait 6-8 months depending on the builder. For both the Lang and the Shirley the expected wait time was about six months. Both of those smokers I bought used and so my wait time was much shorter than the six months. Joining a Facebook group that is dedicated to the smoker can help speed up the process. Fellow group member often post smokers for sale to the group before they list them publicly. Thank you for watching.

I'm thinking on getting one of these, but I heard the wait time is so long..I really love the quality of Shirley's, but I love my Lang 48" too, I've seen some langs quality not as good as mines, But i guess I got lucky because the quality on my Lang is pretty damn good lol, I've had it for more then 8yrs now and cook on it frequently all these year's and it's still in excellent condition to this day.. But if the wait time can shorten some on a Shirley I'll definitely get me one of those too 😁👍

My favorite pits are the Lang and the Shirley. Once you see them side by side you see the differences. I thought the quality on the Lang was pretty good. Not all builders focus on the same things. Some focus on welds more than others. The wait for a 24 x36 Shirley is 4-6 months last I heard. When I think of a premium pits Lang by far has one of the most loyal following of bbq enthusiasts. Lang is doing something right. That being said once you get a Shirley it does change your perspective on what you want for the money. Apples to Apples the quality is unmatched. The builder that I think is under the radar is Brian at Boathouse smokers. I think he is worth checking out as well. Thanks for watching

Good video. The resale value is definitely the most important point here, in my opinion. If you get a "guy down the street" that built a smoker it's for sure gonna be harder to get your money back out of it. I like your humble style, amigo. Hope you keep more content coming. 👍

Thank you for watching. I sold it this morning. Got full price. Guy drove six hours. He even complemented the build. He fabricates but did not want to put the time in. Still I consider it a small victory. Thank you for the comment and the subscription.

@@myporchbbq Geeze, dude. You sold the Shirley? What's your next smoker? I have a Big Phil's Smoker on order.
@myporchbbq
@myporchbbq Жыл бұрын
No, I have the Shirley. Big Phill used to sell a DIY smoker kit that I used to daydream about. I don’t know what my next one will be. It took me so long to save for the Shirley. I must have flipped six smokers to finally get the Shirley. Big Phil does make an awesome pit. Are you doing Big Phil or his other company Blue Smoke ?
@hulkhuggett
@hulkhuggett Жыл бұрын
@@myporchbbq Yeah, I'm doing the Blue Smoke with some add-ons. I saw you had a Lang. I had the 48. I sold it for about what I paid for it, too. After all the add-ons with the Blue Smoke I probably should have just got one of his Smokers on a trailer. I'm seriously considering upgrading to one of his comp smokers in the next year or two. The biggest consideration with some of these builders is the wait time. 😴😴

I had the camera angle inverted ! :) when you looked at the smoker the Shirley tag was backwards. So I had to re-edit it. KZbin will make you delete if you want to do any real edits. So yep…. Repost :) I could not leave it so the Shirley name was backwards

How’s the smoke flavor with Shirley vs Lang
@myporchbbq
@myporchbbq 8 ай бұрын
The smoke flavor depends on my wood and dampers. I started on a box store Oklahoma Joe. I watched KZbin and was taught dampers wide open and only clear blue smoke. That worked on a pit the size of an Oklahoma Joe. My experience has been different smokers require different techniques. I use the dampers on both smokers. I am not afraid to roll smoke that is not clear. I will use wood that is green mixed with seasoned wood. All of those elements add flavor. It took me some time to figure it out. I guess I went into this thinking I was supposed to run my smoker like Arron Franklin on a tiny smoker. Once I learned my pits the smoker flavor was dead on. On the Lang when I use the Fire Dawg basket I have to use some green wood to get more smoke. That fire basket limits the amount of wood and charcoal bed. I made my own fire basket and I have found that easier. The Shirley I had to learn to use the dampers. The fire basket is large and the damper intake is large. It’s designed to be used with dampers. They are reverse flow so I don’t run them like a straight flow offset. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching

@@myporchbbq thanks for the feedback. I have a Shirley 24x36 straight back elevated and I’m still trying to figure it out. I was curious about the lang vs Shirley smoke flavor because they are both reverse flow.
@myporchbbq
@myporchbbq 8 ай бұрын
@@titans254 the Shirley is easier by far. More space in the cook chamber to move proteins to where the smoke is stronger, the intake dampers much larger than the Lang. I do enjoy the Lang. The Shirley is a Shirley … like they say “ If you know how then you know”
