it may have a significant amount of silver but possibly some ferrous alloys as well. usually I let a small amount of the acid sit on the Silver plated test item for about 15 to 20 seconds, this gives the acid time to burn through the plating and give you a good result.
@fenderaxe11 жыл бұрын
the quickest and easiest way to check sliver content is to drop the coin on a hard surface. silver has a beautiful ring to it. sandwich coins are very dull sounding, fakes will likely sound dull too, or at least have a different ring different kind of ring than the sound of real silver. it's why the Christmas song of that name is about silver bells...they ring beautifully. it truly is a precious metal... i never checked the 40% halves to see what they sounded like.

@TheAlexagius And you stated it, Sterling is 92.5% Ag & 7.5% Base Metals. Most the time they use Copper as the base metal, but Nickel can be used as well. And for that matter, a lot of people confuse diamagnetism with magnetism. Silver can be Diamagnetic, as in it repels magnets. If you truly believe all silver isnt magnetic please contact me and sell me all your magnetic silver. Be happy to buy it thru paypal.

@bobmetelsky another point, you never want to "abraid" or "rub" the edge of a valuable coin on any testing stone or test surface, THIS WILL REDUCE OR DESTROY the value of a collectible Coin, the rim of a coin is inspected carefully as part of the numismatic Grading process any rubs or abrasions will relegate the coin to the "Damaged" category. if you are unsure about the authenticity of a Rare coin, take it to a PROFESSIONAL for evaluation.

A magnet can be used in conjunction with a ping test and a weight test and s measurement test. You just use a a small rare earth magnet. Hold the ciin on an angle more than 45 degrees. Place the magnet at the top and let it slide down. If you see the magnet trickle down its a good sign (but just this test by itself). Silver is diamagnetic meaning on movement you get a repelling action.

Putting acid on some sterling caused the acid to turn a whitish grayish slight blue color with just a tiny bit of red in some cases those pieces that did that were sterling or at least 900 silver it does not always go completely red, probably depends on what else is mixed into the metal, would recommend scratching piece on a stone first if that fails then put acid directly on the piece will not ruin the piece stain will come out with great effort using silver cleaner might take an hour.
@skeptical_thinkers11 жыл бұрын
Ok, scientist here. This doesn't destroy the coin, it only destroys the collector's value of the coin. The acid etches into the metal (the longer you leave the solution on the coin, the more it will etch), so this will eat a very small portion of the silver, but it is on the order of one milligram (1/1000 gram). The reason for the color change - you are testing for the presence of copper or nickel. This will not work if you suspect that a silver bar has been adulterated with tungsten rods, the only way to test for that is to saw it open. This only tests for a copper content in the *outer layer* of the coin. When the nitric acid component of the solution contacts copper it turns blue. Nickel plated coins will also turn green/blue. However, if the coin is a copper alloy *plated with silver*, the solution may indicate falsely that the coin is silver when in fact it is just the outer layer.
@boblindstrom34795 жыл бұрын
A neodymium magnet will test tungsten filled silver or gold bars. Non invasive and no chemicals or sawing required.

Doesn't the fake ASE miss the specifications on weight or diameter? If they're using something other than silver to make the fake, I have to wonder whether you need to even go so far as to use any destructive testing on the coin. Any information would be valued. Thanks for making this video!

What brands of acid did you use here? What other equipment is necessary to be able to determine the quality of silver? Also, what's the ratio of the two acids you've used in the video? Thank you.

it's a very old counterfeit from south america, the newer chinese fakes are much better (unfortunately) - thanks for watching and commenting.

I had heard of the acid test---thanks for illustrating it. Right now I only buy from dealers I trust. Would you ask to test a coin if you were buying from someone unknown at a coin show, for example, or at a pawn shop?

Hi pal, I have a doubt, is conclusive the magnetic test, the sound test?, or is pretty necessary the chemical test???

@TheAppreciative1 thanks, it's a Samsung flash memory camcorder -uses an SD card.

Even without the chemical test it is easy to spot the differance in detail like the lack of points on the stars and lack / difference of detail on libertys dress and I am far from being an expert. Also the blue test color is caused by copper. Would the weight of the fake be different than a known real coin?

silverr resonates at a higher frequency. That is why it is used in bells. alloys make a thud when struck silver goes TINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. It will ring for a while too.

Would also like to see what they look like when you wash them off what kind of mark does it leave on the real silver? Also easy test is to use a volt meter...silver is a great conductor and you don't mess up the coin...

Yes muriatic acid is a form of hydrochloric acid. it might be a less stronger solution, but i am not sure on that.

Also, FYI: the Silver Dollar fakes will often look bad, with a too thick rim (as in your example) and incomplete or weak edge rims. Further, usually the counterfeits weigh less (19-20 grams) vs 26.7 grams for the real. Or, if they do weigh OK a base metal will be substantially larger (thicker). Most of the phoneys are detected by weight and sight, and followed up with the acid test if necessary.

Another FYI: muriatic acid is just Hydrochloric acid that's been diluted down to 32%-ish.

@100silverpizza I used the stack magnet to see if there was any steel or Iron content, I have not had definitive results using neodine or rare earth magnets, 40% silver does test as having silver content (it's a dark greenish brown, unlike reddish brown for pure silver) -thanks for watching.
