the quickest and easiest way to check sliver content is to drop the coin on a hard surface. silver has a beautiful ring to it. sandwich coins are very dull sounding, fakes will likely sound dull too, or at least have a different ring different kind of ring than the sound of real silver. it's why the Christmas song of that name is about silver bells...they ring beautifully. it truly is a precious metal... i never checked the 40% halves to see what they sounded like.

Thanks this was helpful. I've been collecting now for about 15 years. When I have a coin of uncertainty, not MS or PF, I place it in pure ammonia overnight. If the ammonia is blue next day it is silver. Added bonus it removes a lot of the dark toning, just rinse and pat dry.

it may have a significant amount of silver but possibly some ferrous alloys as well. usually I let a small amount of the acid sit on the Silver plated test item for about 15 to 20 seconds, this gives the acid time to burn through the plating and give you a good result.

It would have been nice to see you wipe the coins off afterwards to see what you mean as it greatly devalues the coins. I'm kind of left wondering if it greatly stains the silver coin, or to what extent you meant by that. I like the tip though.

Ok, scientist here. This doesn't destroy the coin, it only destroys the collector's value of the coin. The acid etches into the metal (the longer you leave the solution on the coin, the more it will etch), so this will eat a very small portion of the silver, but it is on the order of one milligram (1/1000 gram). The reason for the color change - you are testing for the presence of copper or nickel. This will not work if you suspect that a silver bar has been adulterated with tungsten rods, the only way to test for that is to saw it open. This only tests for a copper content in the *outer layer* of the coin. When the nitric acid component of the solution contacts copper it turns blue. Nickel plated coins will also turn green/blue. However, if the coin is a copper alloy *plated with silver*, the solution may indicate falsely that the coin is silver when in fact it is just the outer layer.
@boblindstrom34795 жыл бұрын
A neodymium magnet will test tungsten filled silver or gold bars. Non invasive and no chemicals or sawing required.

"Ok, scientist here" and then proceeding giving the most obvious and simple fact ever, correcting something that has never been claimed (he clearly mentioned the "VALUE" of the coin) is both arrogant and low iq.

So are the fakes in circulation, going through banks, or are they only in the collecting community? Do banks test coins to see if they are OK or fake? Thank you
@fenderaxe10 жыл бұрын
fakes are often sold at swap meets, coin shows hosted by unscrupulous dealers, traveling coin shows at motels/hotels, and through the mail, to people who want silver content but are not savvy about metals counterfeiting.
@damok999910 жыл бұрын
Fakes are made to have numismatic value. That is collector value, like a low mintage date worth x10 the price. The numismatic coin world consists of all types of metals but silver is highly faked nowadays since $ won't buy you as much metal. Thats right the metal isn't worth more your money is worth less.

Acid test will only work on the surface being tested. So, no. It will only co firm whether the coin has silver at the point of application. If electroplated it would pass the acid test. Best to use a few tests together like weight and dimensions. Silver has a very specific density.

Just another tip. If you really need to acid test a coin, you can rub the edge on a jeweler's stone and put the acid on the stone. This will do much less damage to the coin and affect any numismatic value that much.
@TerryLoerch10 жыл бұрын
The coin price is worth more then the silver, now its not worth anything but silver price because you put acid on it. The weight should be 26.73 grams, or you could use a magnet instead.

I know this comment is a year old, but its still wrong and needs correcting. It is most certainly not useless. This is used on coins of no value other than the silver that is in it. This is to test if its real silver or not and to determine the purity before being melted down for scrap.
