Hey professor, have you noticed any quality issues with the new cards? I took a look at the ones I received from the pre-release and I’ve noticed about a pack and half worth are out of alignment. I also got a few damaged ones, one was partially bent from the manufacturing process while another had a damaged edge. It’s a bit disappointing to be sure, especially since I want to collect as complete a set as I can.

Have you ever done or thought of trying a video going over the best way to buy singles in general? I always find myself unsure how soon to go for singles right after a set comes out and notice I'll either buy too early and things go down or I wait too long and stuff skyrockets.

Just general tip is: If you think this is a card that will be really good or popular and price is not too high it's okay to pre-order. Otherwise it's possible to wait around 2 weeks after release for most card prices to settle a bit. However it's all luck really.

Mossborn Hydra is a new card worth mentioning which has Managorger Hydra vibes in terms of mana value and impact on the board but it doesn't rely on spells being cast but on your own lands which you can control better and it grows exponentially. It also slots into many categories of deck types: Landfall (obviously), +1-Counters, Power Matters and more. BUT you don't have to be a commited Landfall deck for example to make it work as many green decks generally play fetches and land-based ramp and this Hydra goes nuts.

Nadu's not that bad in the 99 at all. Commander players just wanted to jump into the same hype mob of hating Nadu, which is legitimately bad in Modern given you have 4x copies of Nadu and 4x copies of Shuko. There are far more powerful cards in commander and most of them aren't deterministic so even that's not a legitimate reason. Nadu was just a convenient target to bring the community 'together'.

Glad Niv gets the honorable mention, though as a Commander, I think the strategy I'm most tempted with him is a 90+ land deck that only tries to find and resolve Seismic Assault. Seismic Swans was one of my favorite standard decks of a far off yesteryear, and have a Commander that performs the same function as Swans is right up my alley.

I feel like a key difference with scrawling crawler and other effects is whether it does damage or loses them life. You can do some peak jank with the damage dealing effects

I really love this set. I think it reminds a lot of how Magic was maybe a decade ago. You can build really fun decks of any kind but it doesn't feel like every other card completely breaks everything. I've started caring for Magic with Ice Age and started playing some years later. This means...I come from a time when it was insane to play a 5/5 green creature for 4 Mana. So insane, that the card had to be nerfed by having to use Basic Land Mana only. 🤣 Now we get a 10/10 Gigantosaurus for 5 green Mana and that Triceratops one, 12/8 for I believe it was 6 Mana!? Yes, they are extremely green, especially the Gigantosaurus, and have nothing else but their bare stats but...in comparison this is actually an insane power creep. Personally I still REALLY love it, though. To me, there are very few feelings in Magic that compare to just throwing a natural 10/10 at somebody - especially in turn 5.

I like the saproling commander. he isnt very good tbh (like all saproling decks) but he is on theme and makes an honest level t6 deck. please have a guest play him in shuffle up and play. I also like the goblin commander, as krenko is just target for any removal

Watchout with the niv-mizzet loop, since you will likely only have around 80 cards in deck at that point in the game, at which point you will draw your deck before killing your opponents.

Hold up, Buying a collector booster or two per set as a commander player IS a good idea, because you can trade for other singles, or, if you're not a snob, you run multiple decks and CAN use ~20 of the cards from the set, not including doubles.

Spinner of Souls is a better version of Grim Haruspex or Midnight Reaper with better Stats + Reach to block IF you want to draw creatures. Henzie with Umori Companion for example can play it or all 3 honestly.

I wouldn't add Rite of the Dragoncaller to my Ral deck because it increases my chances of wiffing with his ultimate ability. I usually storm off consistently turn 3-5 so I don't need the dragons but I can admit in more casual builds it's a good option.

The "once per turn" i think isnt just a power thing, but a lore thing. Harvester of souls and morbid opportunist for example. A horrifying demon able to draw cards from death? That sounds like a human could do it but at a cost, they get exhausted pulling the leylines for the same kind of power a demon has.
