I chose the 13700K for my new build for a host of reasons, many of them covered here. Since I do not do "drop-in" upgrades on the same board, Socket 1700 being end of life had no bearing. Another reason: I suffered through the teething issues of AM4 and chose to let others Beta test AM5.

I landed om this webpage because I edit photos and don't play games. It is very hard to find a channel devoted to the creator and not the gamer. We have different hardware needs. I use 64gb of RAM and Intel integrated graphics. Gamers do not use 64gb of RAM and use dedicated graphics. You have a good point that Intel uses less power overall even though other channels fixate on the maximum power use of Intel even though you never or rarely use peak power, gamers especially. Benchmarks are informative as far as they go. Some benchmarks don't matter much to creators though. I export photos at night when I am in bed. The passive Lightroom score does not mean that much to me. Editing time, the active score means a lot to me, because that is my time. The 13th gen Intel is a lot faster in the passive score, but not much faster in the active score. When I built a new computer I used 12th generation because it saved me a couple of hundred bucks. Maybe you should include more live use examples and talk about how it feels to use. Some benchmarks in live use matter more than others.

Great analysis on the 13700K. It is so, so impressive and basically a 12900K +++ with better efficiency. More importantly, the power usage is excellent and those efficiency cores are making a huge difference. Overall power consumption on actual real world workloads more than balances out against AMD's 7000 series and on idle so much better as the E cores are doing most of the low-level background tasks saving power.

Makes me wonder how much power CPUs will use in the future. Seems it willing slowly increase. I hear 14th gen will drop the hybrid cores & go all performance cores. Will be on smaller node tho which will be more efficient
@MrNo0p Жыл бұрын
If powersaving is an important aspect for you, you should really look into undervolting your CPU. The 12900k undervolted is the most efficient CPU I have ever owned. You can throttle the powerdraw bei 30-50% on peak draw and still retain 95%-90% of the performance. It also runs a lot cooler like a 10C° delta. Really wondering why intel is shooting themselves in the foot right here when the only thing that they have to do is optimising the core voltage
@claudej8805 Жыл бұрын
@@MrNo0p This sounds more like power limiting than undervolting. Undervolting doesn't lower performance, on the contrary. And I believe AMD owns the efficiency crown.

I've been debating for a while which CPU and when to upgrade, whether with a 13th gen Intel CPU, or wait for 14th gen. I already figured what you showed in your video, that the 13700K beats the 12900K, so thanks for making this timely video. Regarding whether to go with the 13700K or 13900K, I'm leaning towards the 13700K with the performance being enough for me, and the small single core performance boost with the 13900K not being really worth the extra money and heat. I recently saw some rumors about the Intel 14th gen (Meteor Lake), stating that they will only max out at 6-PCores, which would likely mean the 14th gen flagship CPU would be comparable to a 13900K. Well, even though it's just a rumor, that made up my mind that the next gen will likely be totally lackluster and it's time to upgrade my system with 13th gen and not waste time waiting for the next gen, with the new socket and likely a noticeable price bump for CPU and motherboards. So 13700K it is.
@Mike-kt4qh2 жыл бұрын
Go for the 13700k it's a much better CPU for the money with respect power draw and performance is very close. This CPU is one of the best Intel has ever made. It made AMD cut the price on the 7900x and 7950x as the 13700k was competing well with both CPU and beating the 7900x consistently. The issue with the i9 is it consumes so much power and it doesn't pull away from the 13700k as it's always close to the i9 13900k desktop performance and almost identical in gaming while consuming less electricity.

13700k was perfect for me. I went from 3rd gen 3820 and a cheap used 3930k to 13700k. I carried over a 1080ti and a noctua d15, using a thermalright frame now. I'm still just amazed at what it can do, and how much control that I have. Out of box R23 was 30001 and it hit 97c. I have barely messed with anything, but my cpu got to 5.4 all and 5.8 on the best 2 cores without adding voltage. Temps were a little too crazy for me, I just wanted to hit 31k in R23 really fast. Im just now messing around with a nice undervolt and I feel like this is how they should be. I lost barely any performance even in synthetic benchmarks with a -.190 voltage offset. 5.3 on 6 cores, 5.4 on the best 2. Dropped from 97 in one run to 81c after the 10 minute throttle test. It really seems like every single chip can significantly reduce the voltage offset and run the same clocks, I just wonder why they're set on kill. I mean it pretty much requires high end liquid cooling to not throttle. Manufacturers are just in a race to cherry pick numbers from their own set of benchmarks so they can put them on a bar graph without any labels or something.

Waiting for 2x 32GB DDR5 6000+ to become available in my country and will then upgrade to that. Curious to know if having 64GB running at XMP will work better with the 13th Gen over the 12 Gen. 4:06 raptor lake runs fine in z690 but at least on Asus motherboards you are required to update the management engine from within windows (before installing raptor lake if you can) to the latest one on Asus’ website. Asus release notes doesn’t explain the process unfortunately. Asus is at fault for its poor communication on this issue. But once you apply the management engine update, and update to bios 2103, raptor lake will run just fine in z690. I know because I have the 13900K boosting to 6 GHz (under lightly threaded conditions) in an Asus z690 formula board. Also, I Tweaked the all-core boost voltages to a much lower level than the Asus stock voltage… to reduce power consumption under all core workloads temps went from 100C to 80C. The stock voltages are waaaaay too high and require manual tuning.

I really like the idea of idle power consumption being significantly lower than ryzen. However, when rendering a feature length film, with full color grading and vfx we should be looking at overall energy used vs time taken to render. The 125W max power consumption of a ryzen 5950x seems more reasonable than the nearly 250W max power draw from the 13700k in this case. Though we limit ourselves by not utilizing DDR5. It’s really a matter of what you can get for a certain deal. I went ryzen am4 back in January because ddr4 ram and motherboards were less expensive. Choosing your cpu is definitely based on scenario and workflow/load. Personally I’m happy with my 5950x work rig for the years to come. I have. 12400f in my gaming rig, and I think if I ever wanted to upgrade cpu, I’d try to grab the 13700k at a good used price.

I upgraded from a z97 Mark S DDR3 with i7 4770k at 4.8Ghz to a Z690-F (Might seem expensive but what is cheap nowheredays) with an i7 13700k and it is a incredibly huge difference even tough i was still able to properly play all games with the RX5700XT and the old setup. The i7 13700k will also be more then enough for at least 6-7 years or even more with a good motherboard and DDR5 Ram. The performance increased by at ca 5-15% depending on the game because of CPU bottleneck which is now GPU bottleneck because of the overkill CPU. But keep in mind that you should go for a Z-series and not the B-series because the B-series motherboard might seem good and cheap but you are not able to undervolt or overclock in with the B-series. In that case you should go for a non "K" version because you can't enjoy the proper unlocked version of Intel CPU's wich are the "K" ones. Buy cheap buy twice is very common in the PC world. The Z790 might also get cheaper in future for more DDR5 frequenzy but that doesn't really make a huge differenz. For people who only play games the Ryzen 7 7800x3d might also be a better choise because it delivers i9 13900k performance for nearly about the price of the i7 13700k but only in games because of the huge 3d cache. Both are defenetly a future proof choise :)

Hey! So I’m building my first setup . (This is my first and starting setup) I got the asus z690 prime-a motherboard. I7-13000k CPU and Vengance Ram ddr5 5600Mhz C36. So the setup doesn’t boot it shows DRAM yellow led. I’m trying to solve the issue and wanted to know if you have any info. that is it the bios update problem that it doesn’t recognise the 13gen cpu? Or is something else. I would be happy for any information or knowledge about this issue. Thank you very much in advance.

hello, a question, excluding gaming and content creation, what really matters in a gpu? remains its coder support, its codecs and its media engine? Surely rasterization and making 20 fps more is not something that interests me, so what should I focus on?

5:39 i dont think all that difference in hardware for the AMD is fair. Should use same hardware on both with just the Mobo and CPU being the only difference for obvious reasons. Every brand of SSD and memory performs differently. PSU is also important in how it delivers power.

Fast forward to now when the 12900k IS cheaper. Amazon lists the 12900k for almost 10% less than the 13700k, and the Microcenter bundles are 25% cheaper! None of these tests show 25% lower performance, on any metric. Does this video have any relevance now that the relative prices have completely swapped?

I was able to hit 5.7-5.8 but it needs a de lid for that. Amazing performance and when I’m gaming it’s only pulling 40-70watts.
