I absolutely love Folio Society books but the prices are not justifiable for the average reader. I do however agree that badly made hardbacks in the mid-level price range are the worst option overall. If you just want to read a book, get a paperback (or ebook); if you want to collect it or have really strong feelings about the physical experience of reading, go for the best edition you can afford.

Oh yeah, no doubt about it. So pretty, but sooo dear. And is it just me or have their prices shot up recently what with inflation and all? The conversion rate in my currency has definitely also taken a hit. I only buy books from them I'm certain I want on my shelf for all time (my policy with physical copies in general). Will have to wait till I'm a much richer person before I can even consider those outrageously gorgeous but outrageously expensive limited editions. On the upside, after seeing what their limited editions cost, no deluxe hardcover will look expensive to me again.

Agree 100%. Used to buy 3-5 books every year from them, not anymore. There's certain titles that have almost doubled in price. They used to have a good number of books available for 30 pounds, and now there's none. The number of illustrations would vary from book to book but now it appears they have settled for 6 per book, which sometimes even includes the cover's art, and that's too low of a number for my taste. Folio still does excellent work but nowadays there are other publishers as well who offer the same quality and even higher sometimes (larger print size, more illustrations, etc) in relation to cost - beehive books being one example.

I was going to buy the Folio edition, despite the steep price, until I found out none of the illustrations include Zendaya. Deal breaker for me!

Have to disagree on few points Pontus. Folio society books aren't books that are made for readers. They are made for collectors. Most readers can't keep buying a $100 Edition (which would be more after shipping and Import Duty I suppose) Folio looks great but it's just simply not affordable for an average reader. The Dune deluxe edition kind of serves a purpose. It's not as good as Folio but better than an average Paperback. It's a good edition for those who like to collect but can't afford expensive editions. I do agree however that the quoted price of $40 is way too much. These days it seems to be selling around $15 to $20 which is a very good price for this as it still has acid free paper and looks good on a shelf 😊

That’s fair! But I have to say, this video is coming from the perspective of a book collector on a book collecting channel, so I will always have a bias towards “fine” editions and a fairly strong dislike for those kind of “Deluxe” editions. I apologize if I made it seem that everyone should buy an expensive Dune edition just because it’s better quality than other editions. I try to make content that I would find helpful if I was looking for a Dune edition, for example. So absolutely, this is a video for collectors. Hope that makes sense. 😊

I agree that Folio Society books are not cheep and not in everybody’s price range. But they aren’t books that most people buy on a whim. They are collector’s editions - for those who either love the book or want an heirloom copy of the book for their personal library that they (and their family) can enjoy and cherish for their entire life.

Thanks for sharing this and for all the great content that you put out. I was close to buying the Deluxe Edition because of how great it looked but I am glad I went down the rabbit hole of hardcover bindings. Its disappointing to know that some publishers use glue as it defeats the purpose of having a sturdy hardcover that can survive multiple re reads. I live in India, and the FS books aren't available here and would probably be around 10x the price of the Deluxe Edition anyways, which in it self is sold at a moderately steep price here.(For context, the DE is priced at 1200rs or 12 British pounds) The one thing I am grateful for is that most of the Everyman Hardcovers are quite affordable here. I've already added 2 to my new collection and hope to see it grow over the years. Your videos were helpful in learning about the binding, font size and paper quality so thank you once again! On that note, do you know any other publishers that make good quality Smith sewn Hardcovers?

I agree with much of what you say, but I prefer the Deluxe version by far. It's so much prettier and I dislike the illustrations in the Folio edition, with the exception of the cover.

personally I buy a book from Folio Society only if the book is a favorite of mine AND if I like the illustrations in this edition. "Dune" from Folio Society clearly fulfilled both criteria. "Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursual K. le Guin has also gorgeous illustrations.

I own the Ace hardcover, the Folio Limited Edition and also Centipede Press versions of Dune. I love all three. I appreciate what you are saying about the build quality of the Ace... It is still a beautifully present book for its price. I feel your particular copy has been abused. I just had a look at my copy (which has been read) and it does not suffer from those quality issues, so I think unfortunately you scored a bad copy. That aside, I do wish Folio Society would pick up the remainder of the Frank Herbert Dune books... at minimum Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.

The Barnes & Noble "Collectible Editions" books, such as the Dune volume, are indeed not the same as a fully leather backing. Their covers are made of bonded leather, which is essentially a composite of scrap leather that together adheres to a paper backing. It is leather, but not the kind of leather you'd expect from truly leather-bound books.

I checked the Folio price and it's around $140 woah that's incomparable vs deluxe. I may just get the kindle or regular booklet for $8 and if I liked the story then just buy the deluxe set for display purposes lol. Thank you for the video!

I wet with the Barns and Noble Leatherbound for my edition of Dune. Not an amazing binding (the best B&N leatherbounds were the original set of 7 or so classics), but I just like the design aesthetic best.

For what they’re worth, the Barnes and Noble editions are not bad at all. The binding is actually decent, being sewn and not glued.

@@connorpusey5912 they're pretty good, but the first set B&N came out with were far higher in quality. The paper used in those first ones were so nice. Joy to read. Later editions used a smoother, more processed (and thinner) paper.

I would love to own the Folio Society edition but I cannot justify the price. I love Dune but I honestly don't read books more than twice usually. Wheras this could possibly be the exception to that. I actually just bought the trilogy boxset from ACE and will get it Wednesday. I already had the ACE edition of Dune but of course they had to make special versions of Messiah and Children.

It obviously can't compare to the FS edition, and it's got a high number of typos, but for the price, you're definitely getting your money's worth. Plus it looks fantastic on the shelf, and it's the only orange coloured B&N Collectors' Editition book for people who like colour co-ordination on their shelves ;)

i just really dislike the art and covers on the Folio Society edition, but really like the art on the Ace Deluxe editions. But i agree with all the points made here, the Folio Society one is definitely a book made for reading, while the Ace Deluxe really just looks like a display piece.

While I love the folio books, this one...the illustrations are a bit on the bland side. Which is mysterious since there are some that are All That (really great). I am not a professional book reviewer, but Folio Society, if you send me a copy, I shall reconsider my impressions.

I went to check out the The Folio Society book edition on their site and their version of Dune was all sold out. :( It also said there was only a max of 500 copies made. Is it really nonlimited? Sad they don't have a version of God Emperor of Dune. That's my favorite

I think you said "the FS edition is bound and printed in Germany". Is that correct? Is it different for every book by FS? I had read somewhere about "made in China". I just checked my FS "The martian chronicles", it is written "bound and printed in Malta". Is the quality always the same? Or does it depends on the location (like the guitars by Fender for example 🤣)?

Folio society are limited edition ripoffs that sell for 3-4x what they should for the physical quality. $50-100 should be about the price for a decent clothbound smyth sewn binding. I’ll take my first edition first print hardcover that is crappy quality over a Folio society any days. I don’t quite agree here as you are comparing a $29 book to a $145 book, and the art is better in the cheaper one. As well, almost all US trade first edition hardcovers are exactly that paper and binding. And UK trade hardcovers use even cheaper glued slot binding that is worse quality than that US edition. I have a few Easton, Subterranean, Folio, but honestly think they are extremely lame. Easton is 1 page bad art, weird paper that is hard to read and looks like a napkin, in a nondescript basic leatherbound that they up charge to $100. Ditto Subterranean, just in paper hardcover. Ditto Folio, just they have good art, clothbound, and upcharge up to thousands sometimes. Sorry for rant against specialty publishers, as I understand some love it. Give me the original and some Mylar and we’re good.

I agree that Folio Society books are very expensive, but it's very hard to find 500+ page books illustrated and bound in cloth/smyth-sewn that are made in Europe for $100 or less (especially with the same quality and attention to detail as Folio Society books). Even harder for popular works such as Dune. I understand that it seems strange to compare these two books... but this video is for those who are huge Dune fans and also want a copy that is better than paperback/glued hardcovers! :-)

I agree. While Folio are nice i do not think they justify the price. Books from the UK i think are nicer quality and cheaper are SST. They have great binding, art and the guy that owns the company is standup. I also am not a fan of Sub Press. The sub $100 books are nice but once they go to over $100 and some cases $200 they are not worth it. Mexican Gothic i think was $200 and IMO should have been an $80.

I was so close to buying this deluxe dune trilogy box set because they are stunning to look at. Such a shame about the quality. The folio book looks great but i really hate the cover on that one! I think its the colour scheme looks very bland and doesnt suit the desert orange setting of dune . Any more recommendations?

I have the same eddition, and I can confirm it's a bad quality version, it's looks nice in the bookshelve but it slovly degrades as you read it. Not worth the buy, even if on sale.

Would love to have the Folio versions of this book and Messiah and money is not an issue at all for me but $145 for this is beyond crazy and I love this book. After most Dragonsteel books at $100 or Way of Kings for $200 I think $100 for dune would be a better price point. If they gave me a combo deal for both I would buy in a heartbeat but at this price I just think its wrong and do not want to incentivize it.
