I feel like programming is kinda like having a kid. In that, you will get a TON of advice from a bunch of people, who mean well... But they seem to forget the best advice is do what is best for you. Some people enjoy learning the latest and greatest things, while others find it brings them anxiety. I have anxiety if I compare myself to other developers. Which is always a temptation. Because knowing if you are doing well or not, in your personal development shouldn't be dependant on if you are "keeping up" with others. You should peak back at old code, cringe then smile because you cringed because you know better now. Glad to hear you are taking care of your health. I have health issues I have to watch out for. My last job caused me to gain a lot of weight from the stress. It seems like these last few talks have been healthy for you. To just be real in front of the camera. But yeah I know you said you were struggling with loneliness and a bit of depression a month ago. Would love to be pen pals! I like talking about these kinds of things and just being transparent

Worth sharing! It's just what I needed right now. Recently I've been coding for at least 12 - 15 hours a day and noticed that I loose so much weight :( I am new to programming and may knowledge are not that good enough to finish the tasks quickly. So I spend a lot of time in front of my PC. It is so hard to balance your work with your normal life when you're still learning. You need to give extra time and effort to finish your tasks. But after seeing this video, I told my self that, I shouldn't put all my time and strength on my job as a developer. I will just missed some or more of happy and wonderful moments with my love ones. And worst, sacrificing my health for my job is really not good. You can't use your skills and knowledge when you got sick. Always prioritize your health and spend more time with your love ones. Thanks Ed! Chan

This guy always cracks me up, great info too. Keep it up man! BTW that neck pain and ear rininging might be related. I've had this issue as well, and it's oddly related to a muscle spazing out in your neck column and then tweaking a nerve that's at the base of the skull but connected to the ear's "wiring". In short, get a neck massage and the ear ringing will go away. Also, make sure your monitor is set higher from your perspective. Raise your desk or lower your chair. Doing these things kept my neck from getting out of whack as my head is now at proper alignment while working.

just went through what you went through with the neck pain. Was really bad on my right shoulder from internal rotation. (mouse hand, left shoulder was fully mobile) It's internal shoulders of 26 yrs old computer addict. Put your hand against the wall, rotate your right hand for 270 degrees so it points to the left, If you have internal rotation it will only go to 180 degrees- but try to then pull your body away from your shoulder and it should peel your shoulder completely back into External place. It should reset your shoulders completely and alleviate the pain within a day (But if you have RSI symptoms it will linger) Try frequent neck pulls in the opposite direction of your injured side and try it with good posture. Only put 2 fingers max and pull for 1-2 seconds and reset if you are experiencing flaring in the nerves a lot. Time will heal all and good conscious self habits will make everything count

I really needed this video, right now I'm doing my thesis and research and trying a bunch of new stuff when it comes to programming and it has really been taking its toll on my mental and physical health, crazy headache attacks and back pain. I am trying to do the most I can because I want to graduate of course, but I quickly gravitate to this very toxic behaviour of sitting behind my computer for 10+ hours a day and just being mad and frustrated that nothing is working and then blaming it on me not doing enough. I think I need to start making better choices for my health and the rest will be fine eventually.

For you neck and back I recommend a standing desk. I made one by just using cheap crates from Walmart that I use to elevate my monitors, keyboard and mouse. I used zip ties to keep them firmly together so that they don't accidentally topple over. I have even used boxes to elevate everything. You can also buy one but they are not cheap but neither is bad health. Also make sure your looking directly forward and not down by making sure your monitor(s) are at eye level. Also using a soft desk mat under your feet is great too. I was using a rug but a real 1"+ thick desk mat is so much better. For sitting I have started using a fitball instead of a chair just this week. I bought the URBNfit exercise ball to be exact after researching the top ten. This forces you to have good posture. Just make sure that you are sitting up and not using your arms to lean against your desk. Make sure you get the right size ball for your height. The most popular size is 65cm. The great thing about both of these standing and sitting positions is that you can do many exercises even while you work. Search KZbin for 'standing desk exercises' and 'fitball exercises'. I hope these help you continue your love affair with programming and also improve your health at the same time.

With your neck... I had a similar issue and it ended up being a compressed C4 vertebrae. It would cause severe pain down my right arm all the way to the back left side of my neck. Like you I was in front of the computer for 12-18 hours a day for a minimum of six days a week. I ended up going through 3-4 months of physical therapy and I bought a new chair with a high back where I could rest my head and neck. I also make sure that I get up and take at least a 10 min break and walk around my office every 3 hours. Since I have done these things, the occurrence of pain in my neck and arm have been minimal and my doctor said if I continue with the exercises PT gave me, the pain should pretty much disappear. Good luck and don't put it off, it could lead to much worse conditions.

Really important to consider all of this. Programmers and those on the path to become programmers unknowingly ignore all of these because of how much time and dedication this field demands. It's really important to have a limit and maintain a balance. It was great to see you touch on these things. Sometimes a push from the outside is required to realize certain things even though we know them.

I agree, more you worry about tinnitus, more it start ruling over your head. Im having tinnitus for about 5 years now and since last 4 years, I dont have any problem with it. in first year, once doctor told me that it might stay with me for the rest of my life and it is harmless, means it can fuck my mind but wont kill me. since then i stopped thinking about that and my life is totally fine, normal. actually sometimes now i think that if by some miracle it will go away, I will feel weird. cuz im soo much used to it now :D

Maybe you already know this trick and / or it doesn't work for you, but: Cover your ears with your palms with your fingers on the back of your neck. With your palms over your ears, drum the back of your neck (gently) for about a minute. Helps reduce ringing for a lot of people. Repeat as needed.

Agreed. Miss that sometimes but have learned to live with it and not let it control my day to day life. I just hope all of you suffering from tinnitus still manage to live life to the fullest :)

What I learned from learning to program and reading books about people like Steve Wozniak and John Carmack is, that you should not focus too much on other people and try being the best programmer in every field, but focus on what drives you. Set a goal at some point (after learning the basics) and just try to get progress in it. You will eventually get the skillset on the way. And dont get crazy about people telling their storys from interviews at Google etc. From my experience (in Germany), you WILL get some tests, but you can do them in a week or so, no weird algorithm tests. And even if the test is too hard for you, you still learn something from it.

The trap / neck pain comes from anteriorly rotated shoulders (shoulders rotated forward) causing your upper back muscles to weaken and stretch too tightly. Something you can do is get a resistance band and do band pull aparts to strengthen that area. Watch a KZbin video (search 'band pull aparts') and pay attention to form. It's amazing...strengthening weak muscles fixes the vast majority of pain. Do a couple sets in between long code sessions (I do it every hour of being on my computer, even when just gaming) and it will go a long ways to helping combat the inevitable poor posture from sitting so much and resulting pain. I used to get intense, fire hot pain in my traps before doing this and was constantly massaging where they meet my neck. No more! Luckily, I am a fitness trainer before starting to do web dev so I feel armed to combat some of the ailments of being in front of a computer so much :)

Absolutely agree. I damaged the ulnar nerve in my right arm using a mouse for too many hours and it took over 6 months to heal with lots of trips to a physiotherapist. It almost cost me my job. Honestly people do not underestimate how much damage you can do to your body sitting in front of a PC for too long. Stay healthy!

Great timing! I have recently been beating myself up because I am unable to code for 8 hours a day and usually do 4-6 hours everyday. I started to tell myself there is no way that I am going to be able to get hired. This really put me back in a positive mindset. Thank you!!

I really like the pomdoro technique for not burning out. The idea is that you do 25 minutes working then 5 minutes break. Once you do that 4 times (2 hours) it suggests a 20 minute break. There is a timers that help you manage it. Your brain feels allot fresher and it encourages you to stay on task within your 25 minutes. Previously i struggled with burning out and not looking after my health like you talk about.
