Well that is a bit annoying, had looked up laptops for the series and looked like the intel version had the adapter plate not the standoff in the way. They even have the standoff for the longer drive. They really could have made that standoff removable. I am okay with them changing standards but doing it this way just leaves a nasty taste.

I have seen different people on youtube testing 2-3 different 2TB drives and working perfectly (I mean check comments in this same video and you will see many people already using 2TB SSD and at least 32gb ram). I also bought one which is coming next week so, I will know for sure then :D

One thing yo ucould do, although probably not advised, is you could grind down the 2242 SSD screw mount to a point where it does not interfere wit ha 2280 however this also means that you would never be able to mount a 2242 in there again, unless you used an adapter which you can get.

I have seen some recent LOQ disassembly vids where the 2242 is mounted on an aluminum plate that is then mounted in the 2280 standoff. (The 2242 mounts to the plate which then mounts to the 2280 standoff and the 2242 is not installed.) I am wondering if this is a manufacturing goof that they are in process of correcting.

What I noticed is that the one with the metal plate may be a correction to the one that doesn’t have it because the metal plate eliminates the stand-off that’s attached to the mother board and letting you install a 2280 in the main slot just don’t install the metal plate back on if you put a 2280 and it will not bend in the middle.

Even you mounted on alumunium plate might be a good idea, but the biggest problem is the 2242 form factor SSD with PCie Gen 4x4 is still rare on the market nowadays.. I am the on who struggle find it in my country.. Please Lenovo, do you guys have something to give to me as a consumer? Even the small answer for wayout, I really appreciate it.. Hi! There is a screw stand-off that's standing quite tall. When you install a full size NVMe (2280) drive it makes the drive bent.

If the loosely tightened screw falls off and touches the MOBO, while the battery is still connected, it'll short circuit the MOBO. Basically, you'll fry your laptop. Not worth the risk. I'd say just leave this SSD alone for now and use the other slot (supports upto m.2 2TB SSD).

I just installed samsung 980 pro on the 2242 slot. It seems samsung uses a thiner pcb for its nvme drives and fits perfectly without bulging out. For the second slot I'm using same ssd but it seems that screw holding drive in place doesn't pinch the pcb (cause its thinner compared to other manufacturers) resulting a little bit of wobbling (less that 0.1 mm) at the back of the 980pro. Note: In LOQ datasheet, Lenovo mentions that, device has one slot for 2242 and one for 2280 and each slot supports maximum of 1TB of storage. Since 2TB PCIe Gen 4 drive draws a bit more power (8.5w) than 1TB (6.1w), if you want to max out your storage its recommended to use 2x1TB nvme m.2 PCIe gen 4.

@hardikranyal6495 Yep, motherboard definitely supports gen 4. I'm getting around 6900 to 7000 with 980 pro in crystaldisk benchmark. The oem one could only do around 4000 (micron chip) although being a gen 4, so I guess it also depends on ssd itself. Samsung and Crucial(micron) are safe choices, but It's better to go with samsung since it's faster, though it costs a lot.

I screwed a m.2 standoff (size:3mm+2.5mm) on top of the 2280 standoff. It works great I use the drive for extra storage just in case, but it worked.

No the issue appears only for M.2 2280 ssd , you will get default M.2 2242 ssd from lenovo

Hi, the only brands I tested with this laptop and they all worked are: Micron, ADATA, and WD. Samsung, WD, and Crucial have been reputable. No the new one you are getting doesn't have to be the same brand and speed. They are less picky than RAM selection. For every day usage, I don't think you can notice the difference between 2x 512GB vs 1x 1TB setup, if even there is any actual difference. If it was me I would get whatever has good sale/price at the point, along with decent warranty/customer support from a reputable manufacturer.

I don't think so and I think all that cable is for is for the USB 2.0 port, so if it does go bad, you may only lose the USB 2.0 port function (if I remember correctly) however I don't think the heat would be enough to damage the cable. You could put some electrical tape (like I did) on the SSD to help "insulate" it from touching the cable.

I will probably mostly use Microsoft word, browse on chrome (simultaneously opening at least 15-20 tabs at a time) and running some software (Stata, Adobe Photoshop, low-key light video editing etc). watch KZbin and some movies, play videos N.B. I have just ordered the one with 8 GB RAM version. Waiting for it to get delivered now. But still being a college student, I can't afford to buy extra ram at the moment. This comment is a little late but Yes that is plenty. View it like this the ram is the muscle, the processor the brain, if you want to run video games at high speed you want better brain and muscle power. but if you want to have a lot more tabs open all you need is a decent processor

thats kinda dumb design, I was thinking a ssd with no chips on the backside would fit, apparently not. Any idea if this is problem on the legion 5 models? Could be modified easily if you remove the motherboard and grind/drill the standoff away from the chassis but good bye warranty ;D on laptop the warranty is important

I don't have this year's Legion 5 model yet so I am not certain. But for the previous years' Legion 5's, I didn't see this issue. The thing is, why do we need to buy an extra metal sander with the laptop. That's just unfair... Lenovo should have included in the LOQ packaging with a free grinder :P Joking aside, yes you can grind this off but agreed that warranty is a big thing, plus have to be careful with tiny metal pieces may get stuck somewhere and short out components.

Considering buying the Legion slim 5 with a ryzen 7840HS, rtx 4060, 16gb ram. Comes with only 500gb ssd so need to upgrade that and ram to 32gb. on sale for 1200€.

This is not a problem in the sense that Lenovo mentions both LOQ 15, 16 of having 1 2242 slot and 1 2280 slot (like ipg3 2022)... Not both slots are for 2280 ...

In a way, with the 2280 standoff being there but if the specs sheet says it's not supported, I think Lenovo just gave people a gun to shoot themself in the foot.
