As a Tech/mechanic of 37 I've pretty much seen it all and all five are true . Number 4 is my personal peeve as nothing worse than being watched while you work 😕 I often tell folk to wait in the waiting area( health and safety) or tell them it's extra to watch 😂. The diagnostic charge is spot on as the systems we have(HGV and dealer units eg MAN Mancat and DAF Davie) aren't cheap and also there's yearly license fees plus updates which aren't cheap. As stated I've been doing this a long time but every day is a school day and there's always someone who knows more than yourself so I'd never profess to know more than someone who really knows their stuff. Enjoy the videos and look forward to more 👍

It's funny that the majority of the garages here in NYC operate under what you call 'they need the money'. I'm glad I found a BMW garage that I can actually trust and we both understand how well I know my car and how far their expertise reaches. I'm all game spending money on a professional service, but from a customer perspective it's just a headache going through months of dealing with scammers before your car actually gets fixed.

Being in the game for 45 years it's no wonder I have never been to a automotive mechanic, and have learned over all those years, how not to get screwed by as they say in the industry bad mechanics. I have seen in the U.S. many mechanic shops loose there licenses by agency's who watch dog these types of rip off shops. Really never have had the need to go to a mechanic. And that the experience and complete know how has saved who knows how much money. As you have said in the world of auto repair is true, and then some, the SHOPS obviously have to make money, but hopefully with an honest face. Because most are like, as we have seen con artists to those who do not know. It's sad but true. We have seen dealers, privately owned shops tap into the brain of a desperate vehicle owner and lie the hell right in front of their face outright. Just to make the all mighty buck. Doing work that was never done, or doing work that is not needed. Just complete buissness fraud. There are many honest shops now in the U.S. because of the laws in this field, but sometimes you wonder seeing it through eyes of the consumer, the sometimes right out rip offs that still exists and are really putting their license on the line just to rip off someone who needed nothing more than a real repair by a person who dose this for a living. After all not everyone is as knowledgeable in this field of cat and mouse. Where some cats try to catch their mouse..!

I'm an engineer and I have worked on cars and have an aptitude for fixing all things. I do tend to analyse what I think is wrong but always stating that I am by no way the expert. As I am engineer I like to talk about problems and problem solving with experts. I tend to pull a tonne of data and discuss the issue I actually write down the issue in massive detail exactly when it happens what are the environmental factors what has been replaced. I've never had issues because I am not arrogant about it.

It’s great to hear this kind of stuff from a professional so I can know how to be a better customer but I also feel like it’s really tough to find someone you can trust. I would happily pay the full price to ensure the mechanics are paid their full worth as they deserve to but how do I find reliable and trustworthy mechanics that aren’t fully booked up 24/7

The problem is that loads of mechanics are clowns f*ckin-up school not able to become anything but greasy from oil in wrecked cars. Not the sharpest minds. Why would any random imbecil in a pair of blue trousers get the previlege to work on your car?

I've had to work on mine by necessity; never hear back no matter who I call or email to get it booked in to be looked at, always massive backlogs, closest it's been is the tire and alignment shop. Gave up, and started DIY'ing. Currently have a hotrod idle at a stop after changing to premium fuel, from what I guess it has lived all its life on regular; it's quite entertaining actually lol. Exhaust cam correlation error, and a fuel that will allow a timing advance - went with 2 genuine vanos solenoids based on your advice - thanks for all of your hard work and content!

This is interesting cos my garage is happy for me to bring my own part; he’s even told me what part it is and checks it for me. It’s a small garage with only one working bay

You have a great and informative channel, but, to say that garage labour charges only cover the mechanics hourly pay, is, frankly BS! Since when does ANY garage/service centtre pay any mechanic >£100ph, and often a LOT more? NONE! Also, a 'home mechanic' may actuallly NEED to take their car to a garage because some special tool, or piece of equipment eg a car lift/ramp or a hydraulic press etc, may not be available to them. And, to actually ADMIT that your mechanics caused an actual problem with a customers car, just so they will bring it back, is a disgrace, and you should be ashamed of that behaviour, and ashamed that you allow it to happen! Many many people do not trust garages or their mechanics, and your comments strengthen those beliefs!

DEAN! YOU ARE THE MAN! You have already established yourself as an expert BMW guy. I wish you were here in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I would see you for sure. I'm running out of ideas on my transmission going into limp mode when it reaches temperature. I've removed the mekatronik and cleaned it. I also am in the process of replacing the transmission cooling thermostat. We'll see afterwards. I might just remove the thermostat innards if the thermostat replacement t doesn't work.

I recently took my bmw 3 series to a garage to have the rocker gasket change, I had only recently changed all the injectors ( upgraded index 11) soon after gasket sprang a leak, I regretted not doing the gasket at the same time I did the injectors. I decided to take it to local garage I explained that I done the injectors and emphasised that if when changing the gasket if he feels that the cover needs changing to do it. When I got a the car back he said it was just the gasket. A couple weeks later it started leaking again. Went back not very happy . He said he would have look at it.. now I was p…ed off never mind him , i told him what I wanted doing . I wanted to see the cover when takes it off and I will decide if the cover should be changed, you guessed it the cover needed changing. After some discussion we agreed that I will purchase the cover as I wanted a genuine bmw one and because they didn’t do the job properly in the first place we came to a mutual agreement on what I would pay him this time. When he realised that i had been doing my jobs for the past 30 years on my BMWs he understood why i was not a happy bunny. So sometimes you have to declare what you know and what you understand.

To diagnose BMW get ISTA cheaper OBD2 may give codes not even existed or may not read existed fault codes, happened to me. Man, when i was young I learnt not to trust a mechanic, my father is a mechanic I had the chance to see, how other mechanics worked on the cars before us.. lately an e90 burning oil I diagnosed it before buying it no pressure leak to the block nor to the cooling system, I got it and started working on it man, this made it harder to me to trust mechanics. I wish I could post how the injectors oring seals were mounted.

Hi Doc! Quick question: E46 climate control doesn't come on at all, changed the fuses, changed the blower resistor, changed the relay, checked the climate control on a different car and is working! The garage that changed all of the parts, can't find the issue… Any ideas?! Thank you.

@@BMWDoctor OMG…I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a good while but after closely paying attention to this particular video I’m listening to EVERY video you post & I’m heading back to review ALL your past videos I didn’t watch. I’m going to be BMW WISE in 2024! I’m a woman… The mechanics including the BMW dealer have got me & I’m a GOOD customer who pays whatever they ask without question & doesn’t ever do any of the things you described here. Thank you for giving us some much of yourself & your time. I appreciate you!🙏🏾♥️💯

Honestly, I've never had any of these experiences, my garage will bring me into the workshop to show me stuff, I've told them what I think the problem is and we've had a look together. This guy is either in fantasy land or has worked at the shadiest places imaginable.

Hello, I'm curently looking for a bmw e92 325i. I noticed there's a version of the n52 and and n53 engine options. I'm sort of interested in one that has the n53 but is leaking oil into the coolant. I would like to hear your opinion is ir worth it to get an n53 engine or just not bother with it and look for the glorious n52?
