An old friend of mines father in law was a pilot during the Somalian Conflict. He never would talk about it because of how much pain it caused him, but one night he had enough drinks in him to open up about what happened. He said he remembers 6-1 going down almost directly behind him and rotated his bird just enough to see it spinning violently towards the ground and he could hear the crew once they hit the dirt and could hear one of the guys screaming that they needed immediate support of they would be in deep shit. When 6-4 went down, he said his heart sank because his best friend was on board 6-4. He said he talked to him when he was on the ground and said his friends voice was calm but somewhat panicked becuase "when you are a few hundred feet up, you feel unstoppable.... invincible. Like you own the World and nothing can touch you!" But he said after his best friend went down he felt as if that world crushed in his hand. He began to sob when he said that he heard his friend get shot and scream in pain and then started screaming "get off me/let me go/fuck off/stop" and hearing the people beat him to death. At this point he laid his head on the table and just bawled for a few minutes and picked his head up and said "right there, in that moment, I wanted to get him. I was denied every time I asked to land because they couldn't risk another Blackhawk. I cried over the headset and eventually turned it off because I didn't want everyone to know how weak I felt when I flew overhead and watched those *very bad race word* strip him naked and drag him behind a car and set his clothes on fire and waive them around." At this point he said that when he touched down at the airfield, he told his CO once they concluded their mission, he would not renew his contract and would retire. He eventually was talked out of it and piloted a Blackhawk during the 2003 Iraq invasion and then retired with 33 years of service under his belt. He told us about Vietnam, he told us about Desert Storm, he told us about the invasion.... but Somalia broke him. I wish I could tell you he is doing well but I don't know what he is doing these days, sadly. He packed up one night and left with no note or call or anything. He told his wife he was leaving and he loved her and that was it. If he sees this (which I doubt he will), I just want to say thanks for the stories and I hope you find peace wherever you are.

POV: The year is 1993, you're part of Task Force Ranger, an elite task force made up of 160 men. 160 of America's finest. You're in a country located in East Africa, a country that most GIs can't even find on a map. Couple of hours ago, you were briefed on the operation. Your job is to fast rope on the streets of Mogadishu near the target building and provide security for the CAG operators while the Black Hawks and Little Birds would provide air and sniper support. Overall, a quick 30 minute snatch and grab operation. You and your teammates are gearing up. While loading your M16A2 and your M9, you noticed that your buddies are only taking light loadouts, no NVGs, only 4-5 mags and some even removed the back plates from their carrier. Confident, you're joking around with them knowing that you'll be in and out of this in less than an hour. You glanced over to the other side of the warehouse where you see the Delta guys with their fancy CAR 15s and 1911s and weirdly enough one of them even had an M14, you start questioning your loadout as you see them wearing skateboard helmets and Oakleys. Suddenly you hear the go code "IRENE". You rushed in your assigned Black hawk. You feel invincible, the adrenaline is high, nothing can stop you today. As you are approaching the hot zone, you see burning tires on the street knowing that the skinnies were ready for a fight. You hear the go code "LUCY LUCY LUCY". You lower your pair of goggles as the dust sweeps into the helicopter,. The Black Hawk stabilizes and the ropes are thrown on both sides at the same time. You fast rope and quickly get into position not knowing that this 30 minute operation would turn into an 18 hour firefight. In the back of your head, you remember that phrase you said 2 hours ago while chilling near the coast; "beautiful day to fight"

As a Former U.S.Marine Infantry NCO who served during this time, friends of mine from the Corp, Marines who I trained with prior to their deployment. The Marines of 1/9 the Walking Dead (Vietnam era nickname that caused them to lose their color guard) were the Marines who responded to this "incident" the Walking Dead are the very Marines who wore Black Combat boots that cemented their presence on the ground. Several those Marines and I have long standing training history prior to them being placed into 1/9. As their speed in response and dedication to mission action President Clinton reinstated the Walking Dead's Color Guard. If you served as a Marine or you have family that are Marines, you understand the type significance that is. As 1/9 was deployed, they were 5 months in a standard 6 month Float, that got extended another 5 months, they're deployment lasted a little over 11 months. The Marines of 1/9 that responded rate medals that had not been awarded since end of the Korean War 1953-1954. Those who served the armed forces understand the importance of such respect. My deployment began 19 days after they returned to (Horno, area 53, 1st MarDiv) Pendleton. OORAH! Devil Dogs Semper Fi
