When I was a child I kept saying to myself "I should quiet my mind otherwise I wont be abla to sleep" well I got the real meaning years later...it was indeed a tough time which lasted long enough to show me the stillness is precious to discover a new reality where we observe events and toughts without indulging or being engrossed in them, just as you say as if they were somebody else's reaction..only observation and witnessing..I learned it too late

This was, for me, without a doubt, the best explanation of how the mind works and what natural awareness actually is, that I have ever heard. I discovered Eckhart Tolle about 6 years ago and began to understand what my mind was doing, and started watching and listening to different spiritual teachers but none explained how the mind works better that what I just experienced. When Christopher said that the mind is not changed through trying to change the mind but allowing the mind to do what it does, and in that way it settles and changes by itself, that was huge. I have been trying to fix my mind for a long time, and you can't fix the mind with the mind. Thank you Christopher for you words of wisdom and you calm, direct way of explaining sometimes hard to understand concepts about how our mind works. The train analogy was great too.

I couldn’t agree more, I now actually get it instead of going around in circles and watching numerous spiritual teachers give you a bit of run around.

i feel the constantly thinking "monkey mind" is the mind of the physical body & ego, underneath this is the quiet "spiritual mind" which is not constantly throwing out endless unwanted thoughts, but is a reserved reservoir of meaningful thought lying in undisturbed quiet stillness until tapped via deep conscious inquiry. This is all bourn out via various souls who after having a NDE have reported that when the soul has left the physical body, and therefore also physical brain/mind, that ALL of those constant unwanted sometimes very negative thoughts, completely disappear, leaving only a quiet, calm, and very intelligent conscious "pool of thought/mind", just waiting for inquiry with an immediate comprehensive answer, which is way beyond the currant level of our physical minds possible Gnowing or Inner-Standing..

Exactly! This was really a great explanation. Approximately 25 years ago I read a book about a Yogi which was called enlightened and so a LOT of people came to see this Yogi and asked him tons of (very important ;-)) questions, but the Yogi always only gave them one and the same answer again and again and it was simply: "WHO is asking this?" LOL. I was SO dissappointed reading this book, because of course I had very important (lol) questions too! But the seed was planted well, because 10 years later I gradually started to understand: This "who" is the problem, because the "I" doesn`t exist. I found it out by asking myself what I am NOT. So the important question is not "Who am I?" but "What am I not?" What remains then is the true essence which has no name or form. Trying to take the mind not so serious anymore can be a good start to let it go. Well, it´s really a pure pleasure to listen to your words formed by a mind which is used as a tool rather than a tyrant. I wished I would have found your videos 20 years ago. But...as said, still a pleasure and a welcomed reminder to keep the stillness inside despite the storms outside. Thank you!

Hi Yvonne, where did you learn the inquiry ‘what am I not?’ and what is the name of the author of the book you read?
@Yvonne_Jentsch Жыл бұрын
@@alexsmith2471 Hi alexsmith, that`s an intresting question. I guess I`ve learnt this inquiry, because of an experiance while meditation approximately 25 years ago. At that time I meditated often 3 or even 4 hours a day. Finaly I reached silence of mind and recognized: Damned there is actually NOTHING! LOL. But wait....who is watching, experiancing this "nothing"? That`s REALLY me. Back in everyday life and back in the Ego Illusion I wondered if this is really true and decided to investigate the case also with my mind. With my logical mind. Maybe Sherlock Holmes inspired me haha. Well, and after answering all my questions to myself honesty I found out: Yes it`s true, it is just a question of identification. I can be everything or nothing. It`s just a perspective. Only a viewpoint. If the mind is silent then there is no-body. No specific form. Could be dissapointing in a way and doesn`t feel quite comfortably....for the ego ;-) But this also relieved me from the burden to take myself too serious and I can tell you: Live is so much more fun since then, I swear :-))) The book: Phew....that`s long ago. I moved into another flat a couple of months ago. My books are not unpacked yet, but if I still have the book and unpack it in the next weeks I will write a short note here at the comments.

Or dont even overcome it because mind/thoughts are isness. As much as breath or an oak tree. Dont miss awakening by trying to get rid of thoughts because thought is awakening just like anything else.
@christopherJSmithChannel2 жыл бұрын
That is incorrect, because thoughts are part of life, but identification with them is not. Who would identify with them other than another thought?
@christopherJSmithChannel2 жыл бұрын
In addition, who would get rid of thoughts? The instruction was not to get rid of thoughts or fight them, only an identified thought would do that. The instruction was to recognize the true nature before them. "Overcoming" is just a figure of speech.
@Latte111142 жыл бұрын
All what you just described there is the issness of what is. Obviously. Thought, whatever that is, has the same being just like anything else regardless of how strong the thought is in this case "identification". And newsflash: when it is observed and seen it disappears but that doesnt need to be worried about at all. On the contrary because it is awakening itself. Some presentmomentist teach presence as if one has to stop thinking about past or future. Thats a terrible crime against presence because those very thoughts are presence.
@Latte111142 жыл бұрын
Meditator has to stop thinking as much as he has to stop breathing. Yes, the thoughts subside (so does breathing though) when observed but thats merely a consequence not an act or even intention.
