This video is probably going to make people uncomfortable. You can already see some emotion in the comments section. We all know that many who follow "Stoicism" may not fully understand its true essence , and instead think it's all about being a stone cold tough guy. As a result, seeing someone they admire being criticized may trigger an emotional response. This is why it’s especially important for a prominent voice in today’s Stoic discourse to address this topic. Also, even if you disagree, I think you should at least recognise the merit in this guy having strength in his convictions enough that he's willing to publicly criticise a leader that just won a popular vote for president. This is the opposite of being a poser. Ryan actually believes this stuff.

@@DirectRealism TDS isn't real. It's one of these clever internet terms that reduce people's sincere beliefs to a meme. In some people's mind anyone who has virtue is "Virtue signalling" anyone who defends a woman is a "white knight" anyone who thinks we should be polite is "politically correct" anyone who thinks we should include others is "woke." Anyone is respects his wife is "cucked." Anyone who has concerns about Trump has "TDS" These are all terms cleverly devised to diminish any argument others might not want to hear. Then they can ignore them and feel comfortable again and not have to think of the logic of an argument.

No, if he believed what he preached, he would realize that an election that is decided by over 100 million people is beyond his control and move on, instead he has made 3 KZbin videos about it. That's the definition of being emotional, he never had any control over the situation to start with, so why is he so invested, which is contrary to the message he portrays.
@PaperbackJourneys
@PaperbackJourneys 22 күн бұрын
@@wondays654 You're confusing making videos about something and talking about it, with being emotional about it. For example, if someone doesn't like socialism and make a video about why it doesn't work... I don't comment "shut up! Don't make this video. You're emotional! don't talk about it. You've got socialist derangement syndrome! You can't control if a country is socialist or not!" That would be a silly thing to request. Talking about things doesn't equal being emotional about them. Demanding that people don't talk about certain subjects is emotional.

Fight misinformation spread against vulnerable groups. Watch. Record. Document. We are entering a dark time in history. Virtue isn't just an abstract concept and there are usually things most people can do to fight tyranny. Think of those kids who got bullied in school after the lies that their parents were eating pets. We must educate our kids and neighbors when this kind of hateful lie surfaces.

YES. I felt so hopeless yesterday. I wanted to give up. What's the point now? But giving up is the act of a coward. Focus on the process, not the outcome. Keep doing. your job, so when you do die, you will know you did all you could. Don't take the cowards way out. If you feel you can't do that right now, that's understandable. Take a breather. Reassess tomorrow or next week, but do not give up. Do not give in to complacency. Because that's what they want you to do. Don't give them the satisfaction. Now is the time to exercise your resolve.

But I don’t see that future because there’s no foundation for it When there is no stability because the bottom has fallen out, we need to stabilize ourselves so we can continue the discourse with our friends and family and community so they can once again open their eyes Socrates was right, democracy’s weakness is that voters need to be educated and that clearly didn’t happen in this election. People have been fooled and we need to wake them up It’s time to study fascism and show people what’s been going on for years. I don’t want a Nero or a Caesar. Education, yes. But also, it is amazing to realize some folks want to burn the current system that they believe is not working. Those people who just want to have a life without worrying or thinking about how to run a large country with so many running parts, just want someone to do that who aligns with their view of life, just want to get more, not realizing the cost of relying on promises that are based on putting others down. Morally reprehensible? Yes, he is not a saint. He has done things in his personal life that are reprehensible. But at the same time, he was a good president. For example, during his 4 years he worked on signing the Abraham accords : “are bilateral agreements on Arab-Israeli normalization signed between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and between Israel and Bahrain on September 15, 2020”. He also “President Donald Trump on Thursday signed a bipartisan bill that will permanently provide more than $250 million a year to the nation’s historically black colleges and universities, along with dozens of other institutions that serve large shares of minority students.” Also, “Launched the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative - the first-ever whole-of-government approach to women’s economic empowerment that has reached 24 million women worldwide.” And much more. So yeah, he has not been a saint, but as President he fought to better the lives of all Americans. Oh, btw, Jesus did say, who ever has not committed any sin, may throw the first stone...

I fear a lot of people will check out. After everythlng Trump has said and done, the majority of people still chose him as our leader. Our efforts were futile. He will select more Justices to the Supreme Court, cementing a deeply conservative stranglehold on our country and our future

Trump is an old man. He won't be King. Other Republicans are not nearly as popular as him. And he is self-centered at best, a narcissist at worst who is still in the political game to save his ass. A young person giving up is a much bigger tragedy than whatever the old man can do.

@ not at all. It’s to be expected. I am annoyed at how weak the Democrats have been, including how Republicans blocked Obama on his appointments in the last year of his presidency yet Trump was allowed with little opposition when in the same position.

@@justind9019 That's the Senate for you though. The three branches of the government are supposed to be the checks and balance, but I think Trump is finding ways to circumvent that. He's sorta like Chauncey from Being There. He's a vacuous man who is used by those around him for their own purposes.

Ryan really love your work but you are being a bit one sided on this topic. maybe a take a moment to remove yourself from the politics.. although the stoics encourage us to take part i think it is a different time and is much further out of our control, also you dont know either party personally so Kamala could be just as terrible, but we would not know.. either way keep doing you and who is in the white house will not affect our minds and spirits.

Did you miss the vid where Ryan explicitly states that the stoics distinguish themselves from the epicureans by willingly engaging in public life instead of only doing so when called upon? He's practicing what he preaches, which i view as admirable, regardless of if you share his view of the world or not.

What does that mean? Subvert one's core values and become his supporter because he won? Did those who love Trump "move on" when Biden won? From my recollection neither he nor his millions of bootlickers moved on for the last 4 years. He is the only ex president who didn't gracefully accept defeat and tried to steal it instead. Do you see Kamala doing that right now? You have a DEEPLY flawed man with a lot of power, and nearly hundred million Americans willingly gave him that power for various reasons. This is a space for Stoicism, and if you stay true to its teachings, there is little room to see Trump as anything close to any of Stoic teachings. He's more like Nero and Caligula mushed together which is the opposite of Stoic values.

You seeming to not want to discuss this and maybe having an emotional reaction to the video does not align with Stoic principles. Regardless of whether you support him or not, Trump embodies qualities that are contrary to the essence of Stoic teachings. It’s interesting and worth talking about.

It's really unfortunate. I just found Ryan on my nascent journey into Stoicism - which I need very much right now - but I keep getting put off by the political messages. I am not for or against anyone in particular, and the man can use his platform as he sees fit, I'm just of the mind that while politics are part of this subject matter, politicization destroys some of the substance and credibility for me.

@@dylanjames6841I didn't vote, I am just here for stoicism, if I wanted to hear politics I'd put on the news or go to other channels with more experience on the subject. Who becomes president almost never affects my day to day life, I'm just not sure why Ryan who is a millionaire and far removed from the common man is so emotionally invested in something that not only barely affects him, but he had no control over. He should practice what he preaches and stop pouring time and energy into something out of his hands.
