superb responses from Andrew Copson. This is why I belong to Humamists UK

My mum died from the effects of dementia in January. For the 2 years prior to her dying, she would plead to my sisters and i to kill her. She was increasingly confused and scared about what was going on, why she was in a home, why she couldn't be at home with the family and all the time, every visit pleading to kill her, help her die, make it end. I more than my sisters was really directly affected by her requests. I could have physically helped her, i couldnt mentally allow myself, and have to live with myself if i had helped her. It broke my heart seeing her like that and has triggered a massive depression in me. It's not my mums fault she just wanted her suffering to end. Thankfully, i doubt she would have known a lot of how her behaviour became as the dementia took away who she was. My sister's and i will have that with us for the rest of our lives. If she could have made the decision before her mind disappeared to far and then if we could have been with her and she was given something to end her life and we could just been with her and she have gently died before almost everything of the real her had disappeared. My dad died 2 years ago from the effects of bowel cancer. We knew he would die. It took about 10 months from diagnosis to death. The last couple of weeks, he was in hospital. As heartbreaking as it was, it was so much easier for us to know he got ill, went to the hospital, and died rather than slowly seeing him disappear. My mums death will not be the death i have, if such a death should be in the future for me. I will ensure my time whatever i have to do.

Very, very well said. It is long past overdue, but at last the tide has turned.

Almost anyone that has lost someone to an awful form of cancer and seen what they went through, would support assisted dying. We desperately need to hurry up, change the law and stop needless suffering due to outdated morality. Ps sending love to anyone going through or who has just gone through this.

There I was, a few years ago, happy to be living in an increasingly secular country and now look at it - thanks to immigration, religion is rearing its ugly head all over again! 😢 But hey, the opium of the people helps maintain the status quo...

I would like the choice. Simple as that. Best wishes from Australia and I'm seventy-two and at the moment I'm healthy but I have no intention of being dumped into a nursing home.

Once again, well said Andrew, I have been hounding my local MP for years now after watching family go through, well what can only be called hell ( sorry for the religious connotation there) This is a long time coming and needs to be implemented. Hopefully common sense prevails.
